Visa restrictions differ substantially throughout the region. Australia and New Zealand require US citizens to obtain an ETA or NZeTA prior to travel. Many Pacific Islands, such as Fiji, French Polynesia, and Samoa, permit US citizens to enter without a visa, staying up to 30-90 days.
- Our Advice: The regulations vary for each country and its dependencies. Our EurotourClub travel planners will be able to give you detailed information on the regulations for each country and make the necessary applications for Australia and New Zealand well in advance of your trip.
Routine vaccinations (MMR, Tdap) should be up to date. Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines are routinely recommended for most travelers. Recommendations will depend on your destinations:
- Rural/Tropical Areas: If you are traveling to Papua New Guinea or the Solomon Islands, Japanese Encephalitis inoculations and anti-malarial tablets may be recommended.
- Ross River & Dengue Fever: Mosquito-borne diseases like Ross River and Dengue fever exist in Australia and the Pacific. Preventing these diseases with DEET repellents is essential.
- Our Advice: It is important to consult a travel medicine clinic. We can offer specific health advisories based on your activities and destinations.
This is one of the safest places to travel in the world. Australia and New Zealand have low crime rates. The main concerns are natural hazards and outdoor safety.
- Ocean & Sun: The greatest dangers in this zone are deadly rip currents, strong surf, and extreme UV radiation. Always swim between the flags.
- Wildlife: Venomous creatures are present in Australia, but the chances of being affected by them are very remote. Just be careful where you tread and shake your shoes before putting them on.
- Our Advice: We take your safety seriously by only using reputable service providers for all activities, as well as providing advice on conditions, such as the sun and ocean.
The seasons are reversed, as is the case in the Northern Hemisphere. The best time is quite different, ranging dramatically:
- Australia/New Zealand: Peak summer months (December to February) for beaches, and shoulder seasons (September to November and March to May) for good weather and fewer crowds.
- South Pacific Islands (Fiji, Tahiti): The dry, cool season (May-Oct) is best. The wet season (Nov-Apr) is characterized by high humidity, rain, and cyclones.
- Our Advice: Whether you’re looking for the best beach weather, the best hiking conditions, or the best time to avoid school vacations, we can time your trip to suit your needs.
Major credit cards are readily accepted in Australia, New Zealand, and at major resorts in the Pacific. However, cash is required in smaller islands, villages, and markets, as well as for certain means of transportation. Australian and New Zealand dollars dominate as the official currency, and many of the Pacific Islands use this or an equivalent currency, such as the Fijian Dollar.
- Our Advice: It is advisable to carry a mix of cards and some cash. ATMs are widely available in urban centers, but they are hard to find on some of the islands. We shall discuss this later.
Yes, but it can be costly, especially on islands. The best option is to have an unlocked phone and a local prepaid SIM card. Australia and New Zealand have excellent mobile phone coverage, but it is limited or unavailable on islands and out at sea.
- Our Advice: Think about getting a local SIM card if you’re staying in Australia or NZ for a while. If island-hopping, see if your carrier offers any special deals or just enjoy the digital detox – many luxury resorts offer free Wi-Fi.
Yes. Australia and New Zealand use Type I plugs (three flat pins forming a triangle). Voltage and frequency are 230V/50Hz. Pacific Islands have a combination of Type I (Australia/New Zealand style) and Type C/F (European style). A universal travel adapter is a must.
In Australia and New Zealand, tipping is neither expected nor required, as service staff are paid a living wage. A tip for good service is a genuine bonus. Tipping is encouraged and is becoming a custom in the tourism industry of many Pacific Island countries (Fiji, Tahiti), as a way of giving back to the community.

Flights are a must to cover the vast distances. Domestic and regional flights, such as Fiji Airways, Air Tahiti Nui, connect the islands. Ferries are also a popular option for short trips, such as between islands in Fiji or French Polynesia. For Australia and NZ, a combination of domestic flights, trains, and private transfers is the best option.
- Our Advice: We take care of all the complicated arrangements for flights between the islands and domestic flights, and we can advise on the best modes of transport.
It can be a good idea in Australia and New Zealand, where you can do it at your own pace, but you need to be comfortable driving on the left side of the road. An International Driving Permit is highly recommended. In the Pacific Islands, we do not recommend it, as the roads can be rough and unpaved, and there are excellent drivers and tours available.
- Our Advice: For freedom in Australia/NZ, we can arrange a rental. For island exploration, a private driver or guided tour is more safe and allows you to enjoy the scenery.
