Yes, all foreigners except Indians, Bangladeshis, and Maldivians need a visa. This is quite different as you are not allowed to travel alone; you have to book with a licensed tour operator such as EurotourClub.
- Visa Procedure: The visa application is taken care of by your tour operator. You need to pay for the entire tour (at the rate of the government’s Minimum Daily Package) in advance, upon which the Tourism Council of Bhutan will issue a visa clearance letter. You will be issued a visa stamp upon arrival at the Paro Airport.
- Passport Validity: The passport has to be valid for at least six months from your return date from Bhutan.

Yes, absolutely, and it is a requirement for all guests at EurotourClub. Although there is a rudimentary healthcare system in Bhutan, for serious ailments, patients need to be flown out to either Thailand or Singapore, which is very expensive.
- Medical & Evacuation Coverage: Your plan should have strong medical benefits (a minimum of $200,000 coverage is suggested) and include emergency evacuation benefits.
- Activity Coverage: Make sure that it includes high altitude trekking and hiking up to at least 5,000 meters (16,400 feet).
- Trip Protection: It is essential to have coverage in case of trip cancellation and interruption because of the high, non-refundable payments that have to be made.
This practice of tipping is not prevalent in Bhutan but has now become quite popular in the tourism sector as a sign of good service.
- Tour Guides & Drivers: When it comes to multi-day tours, it is considered generous to pay $8-15 per customer per day for the tour guide and $5-8 per customer per day for the driver.
- Restaurants & Hotels: Not necessary as a service charge is normally added to your bill. For excellent service in a hotel, a small tip for the housekeeping staff and/or porters (about 100-200 Ngultrum) is appreciated.

- Environmental Note: Bring a refillable bottle to fill up with boiled and treated water to avoid plastic waste.

- Internet Access: Wi-Fi is available in most hotels in the Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha regions. The internet is often slow. It is not recommended for streaming or video communication.
- Mobile Networks: The 3G/4G network is quite strong in urban areas and major highways, while it does not exist on trekking trails.
- Embrace the Disconnect: Bhutan is not a very connected country. Download books, music, and maps before heading out.

It is essential to respect the king, the Buddhist religion, and local traditions. This is because your actions reflect on your guide as well as your operator.
- Clothing: Always dress modestly. When going to dzongs and temples, one needs to wear proper clothes, including long trousers for men and long skirts or trousers for women. Shoulders should be covered.
- Manners in Sacred Sites: Before entering temples, remove your hat and shoes. Avoid pointing your feet at statues or monks. Taking photographs is prohibited in temples. Always walk clockwise when approaching stupas or prayer wheels.
- Respect for the King and Symbols of the Nation: It is an offense to criticize or disrespect the king. Do not litter or deface coins, which are imprinted with the image of the king.
- Giving & Receiving: Use your right hand or both to give or receive something, when dealing with monks or older people.
Yes, Bhutan is a very safe place, and there is little or no violent crime or petty crime. The main concerns relate to health and environmental hazards.

- Altitude Sickness: This is the biggest danger. Climb slowly, drink plenty of fluids, and tell your guide immediately if you have any symptoms of altitude sickness: headache, nausea, dizziness.
- Hiking and Road: Hiking trails can be quite steep and slippery. Road conditions are also quite winding. It is always important to listen to the guide and be careful.
- Health: Make sure you are up to date on your routine vaccinations. Malaria is not a problem, although insect repellent is recommended during the summer months.
- The number for police is 113, and for ambulances or fires is 112.
