Yes. American citizens can acquire a Tourist Visa on Arrival from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and from some border points.
- Process & Cost: You will require $30 USD for a 15-day visa, $50 USD for a 30-day visa, and $125 USD for a 90-day visa. You will require one passport photo and a form.
- Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry into the country.
- Our Advice: Before you leave, our EurotourClub organizers will supply you with the latest application forms and requirements.
Yes, that is non-negotiable. Comprehensive insurance coverage is mandatory for all EurotourClub guests, including trekkers.
- Must include: Your policy must specifically address emergency medical evacuations for high-altitude areas up to 6,000 meters (19,685 feet). Helicopter rescues in the Himalayas are expensive and frequent.
- Activity Coverage: It should include trekking, hiking, and any adventure sports you are planning (rafting, paragliding).
Tips are expected and are a major part of the tourism industry's economy. Tips are a great way to express gratitude to your support team.
- Trekking Team: for guides - a tip of $15-$25 per day for the guides will be appreciated. Porters - $10-$15 per day will be sufficient for the porters. The tips will be collected at the end of the trek.
- Restaurants & Taxis: In urban areas, it's appreciated to round up an invoice or leave an additional 5-10% in restaurants as tips for good service
- Spiritual Guides: A small donation is expected at spiritual sites.
No, it's not safe. Drinking water from the faucet is a guaranteed way of contracting an infection.
- Universal Rule: Drink only bottled water that has been purified or boiled. Use this water for brushing your teeth.
- Water Treatment on Trek: You have to treat your water. Use iodine/chlorine tablets, or invest in a good water filter, such as SteriPEN, or simply buy boiled water at tea houses. Refuse single-use plastic water bottles on the trail.
- Food: Raw salads and raw fruits not peeled may have been rinsed in local water and thus should be handled carefully.
However, access in cities such as Kathmandu and Pokhara is good, but in the mountainous areas, it is slow, costly, and unreliable.
- Wi-Fi Internet Access: Available at most city hotels and cafes. Internet access at teahouses along popular treks (Everest, Annapurna) costs a little, but the reception is poor.
- Mobile Data: Buy an Ncell or NTC SIM card, preferably local, in order to have a better connection. Internet access is cheap, but it becomes weaker at higher elevations.
- Best Practice: Plan as if you will have no access to the internet for some periods of your trek. Download all your maps, guidebooks, and music before you go.
Yes, and it is a good idea for trekkers to get a local SIM card.
- For U.S. Citizens: International roaming is poor or non-existent in the mountains.
- Best Local Solution: Purchase a local SIM card from the airport or in the capital city, Kathmandu. You will require a passport photo and a photocopy of your passport/visa for the registration process.
- Network: Ncell has stronger network signals in the Everest region, while NTC has stronger signals in Annapurna. Do not expect to have network signals in deep valleys and over high mountain passes.
The facilities range from city to teahouse.
- Cities & Hotels: Modern, Western-style flush toilet.
- Tea Houses and Trekking: You will have the opportunity to use Asian-style "squat" toilets. More up-scale lodges may have western-style toilets. Toilet paper is not flushed, but rather goes into a waste basket.
- On the Trail: Expect nothing more than pit toilets. You are advised to bring your own toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and a headlamp.
- Permits are required for all trekkers, and you are required to trek with a registered guide .
- Common permits: The TIMS card (Trekkers’ Information Management System) and National Park Permit (Sagarmatha Permit for Everest or ACAP for Annapurna).
- Process: Your trekking agent (or EurotourClub) will arrange these for you. Passport details and photos are required.
- Checkpoints: You will need to carry permits and your passport because there are checkpoints along the trails.
Nepal is a very safe and friendly country with a low rate of violent crime. The main hazards lie in adventure travel, altitude, and infrastructure.

- Trekking and Altitude: This is your greatest danger. Never trek alone, too quickly, or when suffering from the symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Always trek with a licensed guide.
- Petty Crime: Be aware in tourist districts of Kathmandu and Pokhara of pickpocketing and scams.
- Air and Road Transport: Domestic flights may be delayed because of bad weather. By road, transport is very slow and the roads may be bad.
