Yes, absolutely, and this is compulsory for all EurotourClub clients. In far-off destinations and adventure sports, extensive cover is paramount.
- Most Provide: Emergency evacuation by medical aircraft is necessary since good medical facilities are only available in Windhoek. Also, comprehensive health insurance should be included.
- Activity Coverage: Your insurance should specifically cover adventure sports such as scenic flights, hot air ballooning, quad biking, and sandboarding.
- Proof: Carry printed copies of your policy and emergency contacts.
Tipping is the norm when good service is received. The local money is Namibian Dollar (NAD), but South African Rand (ZAR) is also accepted, and USD tips will do fine.
- Safari Guides: A good private guide can be obtained for NAD 150-250, or roughly between 8-14 USD per person per day.
- Restaurants: A 10% tip is considered standard when the service is good. Find out if there is already a service charge.
- Lodge Staff: Some lodges have a common tip box. NAD 100-150 (approximately $5-$8 USD) per day per guest is quite generous.

Yes, Namibia is considered one of the safest and most stable countries on the African continent when it comes to tourism. You’re much more likely to experience breathtaking views than anything related to crime. Nevertheless, the main concerns in this case are not safety but environmental awareness and preparedness.

- Environmental and Wildlife Hazards: These are your greatest concerns. Never go near or feed wild animals. Always follow your guide’s directions to the letter when visiting protected areas such as Etosha. Dehydration and sunstroke are serious possibilities. Drink plenty of water and apply high SPF sunscreen. When driving yourself, never drive at night due to roaming wildlife and poor road conditions.
- Petty Crime: As with any country, common sense should be used when traveling to urban areas such as Windhoek and Swakopmund. Keep an eye out for your belongings and do not leave valuables visible inside your car.
- Long-Distance Travel: Namibia is a very large, sparsely populated country. When exploring the more remote regions (such as the Skeleton Coast and parts of the Namib Desert), one should always travel with a reliable means of transport, water, fuel, and provisions, or, better still, with a guide.
- Travel Warnings: It is a good idea to check your government’s current travel warnings before your travels. Currently, there are no travel warnings from the major travel advisory agencies against travel to the popular tourist circuits in Namibia.
The coverage is quite good in the urban centers as well as on the major highways. However, in the national parks and desert environments, the coverage is very poor or even non-existent.
- Wi-Fi: Available at most hotels and lodges in Windhoek, Swakopmund, and main tourist centers, although speeds can be erratic. At remote safari lodges, Wi-Fi via satellite may be only in common areas, and speeds may be slow or costly.
- For US Phones: Check your international plan with your carrier. For cheaper rates, purchase an international SIM card from MTC at the airport with your passport.
- Embrace the Disconnect: The lack of connectivity is all part of the wilderness experience at this location.
Western-style flush toilets are available in all hotels, lodges, restaurants, and gas stations along tourist routes.
- On the Road: On long gravel-road trips (such as to Sossusvlei), you may use bush toilets. Your guide will look for a suitable spot.
- Essential: When going on self-drive or remote excursions, ensure you have your own supply of toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

- High Risk Areas: Northern areas such as Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Region) as well as Etosha National Park (particularly during and after the rainy season, Nov-Apr) are regarded as moderate risk.
