That depends entirely on where you’re going. Requirements differ greatly from country to country.
- East/Southern Africa: In terms of tourist visa requirements for U.S. nationals, visas can be obtained upon entry (Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) or can be applied for through an e-Visa online option. The cost varies between $30 and $100.
- Southern Africa: South Africa does not require a visa for stays under 90 days, while Botswana and Namibia also allow visa-free entry.
- Critical: Your passport should always be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date, with at least 2-4 pages available. Please check for exact requirements before travel.

- What you'll need: A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is often required for entry into many countries, especially if you are coming from or passing through an at-risk zone, for example, Kenya or Ghana. You will need to bring your original Yellow Card.
- Strongly Recommended: Routine vaccines (MMR, Tetanus), in addition to Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Malaria prophylaxis. Malaria is a high risk in most areas where safaris occur—that is, in rural regions—and your physician will prescribe which antimalarials to take.

- The Smart Way: For longer journeys, use an unlocked phone and a local SIM card (Safaricom in Kenya, Vodacom in Tanzania, MTN in South Africa). It is very cheap and provides great local call rates.
- Reality Check: Embrace the disconnect in the bush. Wi-Fi access is normally limited to the main public area and is generally slow. Download maps and music prior to your trip.

- Common Types: Type D (used in India), Type G (used in UK), Type C (used in Europe), and Type M (used in South Africa). The best investment for you would be a universal international adapter.
- Voltage: In most of the world, the standard voltage is 220-240V. However, most modern electrical devices (cell phones, cameras, computers, etc.) are designed to be dual-voltage. Check the packaging to see if that’s the case.
- Pro Tip: Electrical outlets in older camps or tents may be limited. Carry a multi-port USB charger with a high-capacity power bank for the safari.
Tips are a common practice in the tourism sector and help supplement people’s incomes. Tips should always be given in the local currency or USD.
- Safari Guide Price: between 15-25 USD per guest, per day for an excellent guide. The cost per driver-guide will be 10-15 USD per guest per day.

- Overland Transfers: Over shorter distances, for instance Zambia to Zimbabwe for Victoria Falls, private cross-border transfers are safe and problem-free when arranged by your tour operator.
- Avoid: Crossing international borders in a self-driving car means a lot of paperwork and hassle with insurance. We take care of this for you.

- For a Safari: Do not self-drive in large national parks like Serengeti National Park, Kruger National Park in South Africa, or Chobe National Park in Botswana.
- Where it Works: Self-driving in South Africa and Namibia is great on well-built roads and in some private reserves. An International Driving Permit is frequently required.
