Yes. American nationals require a visa. The most popular options are Visa on Arrival at international airports and certain land borders, or an e-Visa, which can be obtained online in advance.
- Visa on Arrival: Bring $35-40 USD in cash (this varies by nationality), 1-2 passport photos, and a completed application. The passport must be valid for at least six months.
- e-Visa: You can apply online prior to your visit. This saves you time when you arrive at the airport.
- Our advice: EurotourClub organizers will be able to guide you through the visa options for your particular entry point and route.
Yes, absolutely, and it’s mandatory for all of our guests at EurotourClub. Medical facilities outside Vientiane and Luang Prabang are very limited.
- Medical & Evacuation: Your policy must provide medical insurance benefits and emergency medical evacuation benefits, including airlifting to Thailand in the case of serious medical conditions.
- Activity Coverage: It should include activities such as trekking, cycling, zip lining, and motor biking in case these activities are planned.
- Proof: Carry a printed copy of your insurance and contact information.
Tips are not a cultural tradition in this region, but they have become popular in the tourism industry because of Western cultural influences.
- Eating and Drinking Establishments: Not expected, but a small amount of change or a rounded-up check in a tourist area is appreciated.
- Tour Guides & Drivers: For a multi-day guide, a tip of $10-15 per day is quite liberal. For drivers, a tip of $5-8 per day.
- Hotels: While tipping housekeeping is not expected, you may leave a little money (around $1-$2 USD) on your bed when you check out.
It is not safe to drink. Bottled or purified water should be consumed exclusively.
- Universal Rule: Drink bottled water only if it is sealed, cheap, and available everywhere. Use it to brush your teeth.
- In Restaurants: Ice in fixed tourist restaurants and hotels is made of purified water and is safe to use. If in doubt, order drinks without ice, “bor mi nam kon.”
- Green Tip: Pack either a filtered water bottle or water purification tablets, especially for travel to more rural destinations.
Connectivity is quite good in urban and rural areas, but it is slow and unreliable.
- Wi-Fi: Widely available in most hotels, guesthouses, and cafes in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Vang Vieng, but the connection can be slow.
- Mobile Data: This is your best option. Buy a SIM card from either Unitel or Lao Telecom for data packages.
- Remote Areas: Connectivity will be very poor to non-existent in villages, during boat rides, and during trekking.
Yes, but the costs for international roaming are high. Obtaining a local SIM is easy and inexpensive.
- For U.S. Travelers: Ask your provider about an international package, though a local SIM card is always cheaper.
- Best Local Solution: Buy a prepaid tourist SIM at the airport or in town. You will be required to provide your passport for the registration process. A data bundle with a few GB of data will only cost a few dollars.
- Coverage: Fair in urban areas and along the main roads, but sporadic in mountainous areas.
You can also expect a combination of Western toilets and the common Asian squat toilets.
- Hotels & Tourist Restaurants: In cities and tourist hubs, you will primarily find sit-down toilets.
- Public Toilets, Rural Areas & Bus Stations: Squat toilets are common. Public toilets may require a small fee (2000-5000 LAK) and may not have toilet paper.
- Essential: Always carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Toilet paper is not supposed to be flushed down the loo. That causes blockages. Toilet paper goes into this bin.
Laos is generally a very safe and tranquil place with little violence. The biggest danger in this country lies in traffic accidents, theft, and unexploded ordnance.

- Petty Crime: Be mindful of your personal belongings when shopping at crowded markets and at bus stations, particularly in Vientiane and Vang Vieng.
- Unexploded Ordnance (UXO): It is a very serious threat in rural regions, especially in the eastern part of the country. Under no circumstances should one handle any kind of metal object if it is not known to be harmless. It is best to restrict one’s walk to established routes while paying.
- Traffic: The condition of the roads can be bad. When renting a motorbike, it is essential to wear a helmet and have an international driving license.
- The number for the tourist police is 1191.
