Yes. Travel insurance needs to be obtained before your trip even begins, as there are certain destinations that require proof of coverage for all foreign visitors.

At a minimum, your policy must include:

• Medical Expenses;
• Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation.

It will not be possible to be a member of this group until the tour leader has confirmed that you can be a part of it:

• Your Insurance Policy Number;
• Your Insurance Provider’s 24-hour Emergency Contact.

It should also be noted that for travelers residing in the USA, the European Union, or Switzerland, travel insurance cannot be made a requirement. However, for travelers residing in the mentioned regions who choose to travel without travel insurance, they will have to sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form.

Tipping is not commonly done or expected in Taiwan. Service charges are usually automatically added in restaurants, and taxi drivers tend to give you change as well. However, in tourism-related industries, if you have received exceptional service, it is now becoming acceptable to tip in small amounts.

Tap water is safe to brush teeth, but is not safe to drink unless it is boiled first. The local residents have filtered their water, and most restaurants and drinking fountains have filtered water as well.

The people of Taiwan are very tech-savvy, and high-speed internet connectivity is excellent, whether in cities or towns. However, connectivity might be problematic in mountainous regions due to the high altitude.

Mobile phone coverage is first-rate across cities and towns but is only available in a few remote areas of the mountains. If you have your own phone plan, ensure international roaming is activated prior to leaving home.
