Uganda travel FAQs
Yes, U.S. citizens require a visa. The easiest way to obtain a visa is to apply for an e-Visa online prior to traveling. It's an easy process for tourist visits.
- E-Visa: Apply for the Ugandan e-visa through the Ugandan government’s official website. You will need a digital photo of yourself, your passport information, and yellow fever vaccination documents. The application will take a few business days for completion.
- Passport Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date.
- East African Tourist Visa: If you are planning a visit to both Rwanda and Kenya, you are eligible for a combined visa. We can advise if this applies to you.
Yes, definitely, and this is mandatory for all EurotourClub clients. In an adventure tourist destination like Uganda, this is a non-negotiable.
- Must Include: Emergency Medical Evacuation (Helicopter rescue from remote parks is costly and essential) and Medical Coverage.
- Activity Coverage: Make sure your policy includes coverage for gorilla/chimpanzee trekking and any other adventures you plan to undertake, such as white-water rafting.
- Proof: Be prepared to carry printed copies of your policy and contacts in case of an emergency.
It has long been the custom to leave a tip, which is not only a gesture of appreciation for the staff but also a way for them to supplement their incomes.
- Safari Guides and Drivers: For a good guide, a daily fee of $15- $20 is a good target. For a good driver, the target may be $10-$15.
- Porters for Gorilla Trekking: It is highly advisable to hire a porter ($20-$25) per day. This in itself is a huge help to the authorities. It would merely be an additional kindness.
- Restaurants and Hotels: A tip of 5-10% would be appreciated. Porters in hotels can expect $1-$2 per bag.
Do not drink tap water. Stick only to bottled water or filtered water in order not to get sick.
- Bottled Water: Packaged water is widely available. Your guide can provide you with as much as you need.
- At Lodges: Many of the eco-lodges have filtered/treated water for drinking. You can refill your water bottle from there.
- Vigilance: Drink water and brush your teeth with bottled water.
Uganda is a stable country and very accommodating to visitors. The main worries are petty theft in urban areas and heeding expert advice in the wilds.

- Be careful about your belongings when in urban areas such as Kampala. Do not walk alone at night.
- In all your wildlife encounters and trekking expeditions, it is always wise to follow your guide's guidelines. They are trained professionals.
- Stay up to date on travel advisories for specific areas near borders.
- The number to call the police is 999.
- Yellow Fever: A Yellow Fever vaccination card is mandatory. You must carry the original “Yellow Card.”
- Malaria: It is a high-risk disease in Uganda. Anti-malarial drugs need to be taken according to prescription. Insect repellents containing DEET and sleep under nets.
- Other Vaccinations: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Cholera are strongly advised. Consult a travel clinic 4 to 8 weeks before traveling.
Internet access is satisfactory in urban areas, but almost nonexistent in national parks and other rural areas.
- Wi-Fi: Internet connectivity is available in most hotels and lodges, particularly in larger towns like Entebbe and Kampala. At the safari lodges, Wi-Fi is mostly available in the common area and can be quite sluggish.
- For U.S. Phones: Reach out to your carrier to learn about their international plan options. Purchase a local SIM card (MTN or Airtel) as soon as you arrive in Tanzania—it's inexpensive and offers the best local rates.
- Embrace the Disconnect: Appreciate the lack of connectivity in the parks as part of the overall safari experience.
The provision for toilets varies from the modern flush toilet available in city hotels to the simple ‘long-drop’ pit latrines found in remote national parks or on certain trekking routes.
- On Safari: Most permanent camps and tented camps usually include en-suite bathrooms with toilets and showers, some with hot water on request.
- During Gorilla Treks: You will use basic pit toilets at the briefing point. Once in the forest, your guide will identify a suitable spot for your "bush break."
- Essential: Always pack toilet paper and hand sanitizer in your day pack.
This is considered a highlight for most visitors and must be planned for.
- Permits are Mandatory & Limited: You need to have a permit which will cost you $800 per person. We arrange them for you well in advance (6+ months prior is always preferred as they are sold out quickly).
- Fitness & Rules: Hikes are strenuous (2 to 8 hours of hiking involving steep hills and muddy trails). A minimum age of 15 is required.
- Our Role: EurotourClub manages everything related to permits, pre-hike briefings, and making sure you’re equipped and prepared for what’s ahead.
These lions, known for climbing trees, mainly exist in the Queen Elizabeth National Park, specifically in Ishasha. They like to rest in large fig and acacia trees, mainly in the afternoon.
- Not a Guarantee: While quite common in Ishasha, they are wild animals. Your guide will know where to search. Spotting them is an exciting addition to an already stunning national park.
In addition to the general safari attire, there are other essential items:
- For Gorilla Trekking: Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, Gardening gloves for gripping plants, and Gaiters that prevent mud from getting into your hiking boots.
- Health & Comfort: Quality headlamp, reusable water bottle, and small backpack for everyday items. Don't forget to pack binoculars and zip-lock bags to keep electronics dry and dust-free.
