- Registration: In case you overstay your visit by more than 5 working days, you are required to register with the State Registration Service. This is done by hotels and licensed guest houses on your behalf. Hold onto your registration card until you depart the country.

Yes, absolutely, and it is obligatory for all EurotourClub participants. Medical care outside of Bishkek is limited, and evacuation from the mountains can be complicated.
- Medical & Evacuation: Your policy should provide high medical expense coverage and evacuation, including helicopter rescue in the event of trekking accidents.
- Activity Coverage: It should specifically include adventure sports such as trekking, horse riding, and mountain biking.
- Trip Protection: Make sure that the protection plan covers trip cancellation and interruption.
The habit of tipping is not common to the local culture, but it is gradually gaining popularity, particularly within the tourist sector, both in Bishkek and yurt camps.
- Restaurants & Cafes: In places that have tourists, it is considered polite to leave 5-10% as tips. In local restaurants, this isn’t expected.
- Tour Guides and Drivers: A guide for an multi-day trek or tour can expect 500-1000 KGS (approximately 6-11 USD) per day, which is very generous. A driver can expect half of that amount.
- Homestays & Yurt Stays: It is a great idea to tip your host family as an expression of your appreciation for their hospitality. It is always better to do this as a group.
No, it is not safe. Do not drink tap water in any part of Kyrgyzstan.
- Universal Rule: Use only bottled water, boiled water, and filtered water. This is very important even for brushing your teeth.
- At Accommodations: Guesthouses and yurt camps will offer access to clean drinking water (boiled or bottled water). Always check.
- In the Mountains: When trekking, it is necessary to treat water from streams and lakes. Use purification tablets, filtration, or boil it for one minute.
The internet is reasonably good in cities like Bishkek and Osh, but it is limited or does not exist in the countryside and mountains.
- Wi-Fi: Available in most city hotels, cafes, and hostels, though the connection speed may be variable.
- Mobile Data: The best means of communication. Reception is good along the roads and in the town.
- In Remote Areas: Assume that you won't have any connection when trekking, in the alpine lakes (such as Song Kol Lake), or in any yurt camp. Inform your family about your itinerary before you go.
Yes, and obtaining a local SIM card is very inexpensive and something that I highly recommend.
- For U.S. Citizens: International roaming is very costly. The network may not even provide good coverage. It is always a much better option to use a local SIM.
- Best Local Solution: Buy a prepaid SIM card upon arrival at the airport or in town from companies like Beeline, MegaCom (O!), or K Telecom. A passport is required to register. Data prices are very low.
- Coverage: There is coverage where there is population, but where there are high passes and rural areas, there is no coverage.
The facilities vary from Western-standard to very primitive, especially in rural areas.
- Hotel & Restaurant Facilities in Cities: Normal toilet seats available.
- Homestays, Yurt Camps & Trekking: Expect pit toilets (long drops) and Asian-style squat toilets. There will be little availability of toilet paper.

- Road Safety: Mountain roads can be very dangerous when driving. Recruit experienced drivers.
- Political Situation: Avoid any public assemblies and rallies, which may, on occasion, take place in the capital, Bishkek.
