Zanzibar is a part of Tanzania. If your connection is direct to Zanzibar (ZNZ airport), the same visa policy applies for Tanzania mainland.
- For U.S. Citizens: You will require a visa. The easiest way is to get an e-visa from Tanzania prior to your trip. Apply through the official Tanzania Immigration web page.
- Visa on Arrival: Available at Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ), though lines may be very long. The pre-approved e-Visa is highly recommended.
- Passport Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your entry date and have at least two blank pages.
Yes, it is absolutely mandatory that all EurotourClub participants are properly insured against travel risks. Medical care on the island does not cover serious problems.
- Critical Coverage: Your policy must include emergency medical evacuation (repatriation to mainland Tanzania or overseas) and comprehensive medical insurance.
- Activity Coverage: Make sure it includes activities such as snorkeling,Scuba diving, and Spice farm.
- Our Advice: Always have a copy of your insurance information in digital and physical format with you.
The practice of tipping is common and welcomed in the tourism industry. The economy is highly dependent on the tourism industry, and tips make a substantial contribution to the income of service providers.
- Restaurants & Bars: A service charge isn’t expected, but tipping 10% is considered proper if there isn’t one.
- Guides & Drivers: For a day-long guide, a tip of $10-$15 USD would do. For the drivers, $5-$10 USD.
- Hotel Staff: $1-$2 per day for housekeeping. Tipped in the hotel room. For porters, $1 per bag.
- Local Currency: It’s best to tip in Tanzanian Shillings or U.S. dollars. Small bills are best.

- Bottled Water: Bottled water that comes in sealed packaging is widely available and is not very expensive either.

Zanzibar is a safe destination, but some forms of petty crime, including bag snatching and pickpocketing, may happen. These are especially likely in Stone Town. Cultural sensitivity is also important.

- You ought to be very careful with your belongings, especially your phone and camera, around Stone Town and when frequenting popular beaches such as Nungwi and Paje.
- Clothe yourself in a conservative fashion off the beaches (so shoulders and knees are covered), in order to avoid attracting the wrong kind of attention and to show respect for local customs
- Refrain from walking alone on beaches at night.
- The toll-free police numbers in Tanzania are 112.
- Yellow Fever: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are entering from an area where yellow fever is a risk.
- Malaria: Zanzibar is a malarial area. Take your anti-malarial medicines, apply insect-repellent containing DEET, and sleep under insect nets.
- Sun Protection: The equatorial sun is very intense. One must apply sunscreen with a high SPF rating, together with a hat and adequate hydration.
Internet connectivity is relatively good in Stone Town and tourist areas, but it may be slow or even absent in outlying areas of the island.
- Wi-Fi: Available in most hotels, guesthouses, and cafes in popular areas. Varying speed.
- For U.S. Phones: Talk to your carrier about an international plan. If you want to avoid high costs, purchasing a local SIM card (from Halotel, Vodacom, or Airtel) at the airport or in Stone Town is very inexpensive.
- Coverage: The 3G/4G network has adequate coverage in urban and tourist coastal areas.
Amenities vary from modern Western-style to very primitive.
- In Hotels & Resorts: You'll get modern toilets where you can sit down.
- In Local Restaurants & Public Areas: Beyond large hotel facilities, you may come across squat toilets in public areas. Public toilets may demand a minimal fee (200-500 TZS).
- Essential Item: It is important to always have your own roll of toilet paper and bottle of hand sanitizer, because the availability of these items isn't guaranteed.
Zanzibar is a conservative Muslim society. Modest clothing is essential, particularly when visiting Stone Town and villages.
- General Rule: Shoulder and knee coverage is required. Light, loose-fitting clothing is both respectful and appropriate for the climate.
- On the Beach: Swimsuits are acceptable on hotel beaches or in tourists’ areas, but you must wrap yourself with a kaftan or sarong when going or coming from or in public places.
