Yes, absolutely, and it is mandatory for all EurotourClub guests. While good hospitals are found in larger cities, foreign medical care is not free, but expensive. Evacuation is very expensive.
- Medical Benefits: You must carry high medical benefit limits (a minimum of $100,000).
- Trip Protection: It is very important to have coverage for trip cancellation and interruption, since a trip requires a lot of prior planning and expenditure.
- Theft Protection: Theft protection, covering lost or stolen articles, is advised.
It is not the practice to tip in most instances. In fact, tipping can sometimes lead to embarrassment and refusal.
- Restaurant & Hotel: Do not tip. Upscale hotels and Western-style restaurants may include a 10-15% service charge in the bill.
- Tour Guides and Drivers: Tipping is now common in the tourism sector, especially due to the influence of Western culture. For good services, one should consider tipping CNY 50-100 per day for the guide and CNY 30-50 per day for the driver.

Internet access is widely available but highly controlled (known as the “Great Firewall of China”). Internet speed is relatively quick in urban areas.
- Wi-Fi: This is available in most hotels, cafes, and restaurants. However, it is also governed by the same restrictions.
- Indispensable Tool: In order to have access to the blocked services such as Gmail, social media, Google Maps, etc., you have to have a VPN installed on your devices prior to your entry into China. Do not wait until you land.
Yes, but not entirely. Roaming is costly, and you cannot use most apps if you don’t have a VPN. A local SIM is a good idea for data.
- For U.S. travelers: Review your cellular provider's international plan. Data roaming will be possible, but it will be subject to censorship.
- Best Local Option: Buy a prepaid SIM card from China Mobile, China Unicom, or China Telecom when you arrive in China. It will require your passport. This will ensure you have very good 4G/5G connectivity.
