CAUCASUS WINE, CAVES, MOUNTAIN MONASTERIES

Wine Roads and Monastery Skies

This 11-day Caucasus journey starts in Tbilisi and winds through western Georgia, cave cities, old spa towns, mountain lakes and Armenia's capital, Yerevan. It is a hands-on trip with family wine, home cooking, Soviet-era ruins, monastery views and the kind of road days that make the region feel close instead of rushed.

Expect hills, steps, cobblestones and a few longer drives, but also plenty of payoff: Kutaisi legends, Vardzia's carved rooms, Lake Sevan's high-altitude blue and warm local meals that turn travel days into real memories.

Why You'll Love This Trip

  • Kutaisi Old Stories
Walk Georgia's ancient city of markets, arches, tramways and Golden Fleece legends.
  • Tskhaltubo Afterlife
Explore abandoned Soviet sanatoriums where grand halls now feel cinematic and strange.
  • Caucasus Wine Thread
Taste Georgian family wine, then compare Armenia's modern wine scene in Dilijan.
  • Vardzia Cave City
Step through carved rooms, frescoed churches and old passages above the Mtkvari River.
  • Armenian Home Cooking
Learn dolma with local women preserving food traditions through hands-on hospitality.
  • Sevan Mountain Blue
Sleep near Lake Sevan, then visit Sevanavank above the wide turquoise water.
This is a Caucasus trip full of texture: train rides, monastery courtyards, family tables, rough-edged history and mountain light. It gives you two countries without making either one feel like a quick checkbox.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
This itinerary gives you a strong taste of Tbilisi, but it does not spend a full sightseeing day there. If cafe streets, sulfur baths and old-town wandering are high on your list, arriving a day or two early is a smart move.

The Caucasus is beautiful, but it is not always flat or polished. Expect cobblestones, stairs, uneven paths, hills and some luggage handling at hotels and stations. Pack light enough that you can manage your own bags when needed.

The Lake Sevan accommodation is simple and chosen for the location rather than hotel-style comfort. Rooms and facilities may feel basic, and that is part of the tradeoff for sleeping near one of Armenia's most memorable landscapes.

This trip can pair well with an Azerbaijan itinerary if you want a bigger Caucasus journey. Border rules and routing can change, so check the current order and connection options before locking in flights.
Visa information
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a trusted third-party. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements and does not cover full entry visas. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy for stays under 90 days typically do not need a tourist visa. Additional service fees may apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa. Always check official sources before traveling.
Accommodation
Accommodation on this trip is varied and practical: mostly hotels, plus one guest house and one simple lake cottage near Sevan. The exact properties may change, but the style and standard will stay close to what is described in the itinerary.

Early check-in is not guaranteed if you arrive before the normal hotel check-in time. If you want to go straight to your room after an overnight flight, it is best to book an extra pre-tour night.
Joining point
Joining point: River View Hotel, Tbilisi, Georgia.

Your welcome meeting usually takes place at the starting hotel on Day 1. If the joining point changes, the updated details will be listed in your final documents. Please make sure EurotourClub has your correct arrival information so your first day runs smoothly.

Important notes

1. A single supplement may be available if you would rather have your own room. It does not apply to Day 9 at Lake Sevan, where the accommodation setup is more limited.

2. Passport details are required at least 30 days before departure so train tickets and other trip arrangements can be completed on time.

3. Because of regional border-crossing rules, your tour leader may be from Georgia, Armenia or another nearby country. The leader's role and support remain the same throughout the trip.
