HOBART, FREYCINET, TARKINE

Wild Coasts and Rainforest Roads

This 6-day Tasmania adventure starts and ends in Hobart, looping through the island's east coast, mountain country, west coast rainforest and wild river landscapes. It is a compact but full route through Bicheno, Freycinet National Park, Wineglass Bay, Bay of Fires, Sheffield, Cradle Mountain, Strahan, Takayna/Tarkine, Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park and Lake St Clair.

Tasmania feels different from mainland Australia: cooler, greener, sharper around the edges. Expect short walks, long scenic drives, orange-lichen boulders, glacial lakes, rainforest air, Aboriginal culture, local wine, possible penguins, and the kind of weather that makes a waterproof layer feel like a very smart life choice.

Tour program
  • Welcome to Tasmania. Begin in Hobart, or Nipaluna in the language of the Muwinina and Palawa peoples, with a 9:30 am welcome meeting. After meeting your leader and group, walk to ningina tunapri, the Tasmanian Aboriginal culture gallery at TMAG, for an introduction to Palawa history and living culture. Leave Hobart for Richmond, one of Australia's oldest townships, where you will have time to wander its historic streets. Later, visit a family-owned winery for a tasting before continuing to the coastal town of Bicheno, your base for the next two nights.
  • Accommodation
Hotel or Motel in Bicheno - 1 night
  • Meals
    None included
  • Included / optional activities
Included: Hobart - ningina tunapri TMAG's Tasmanian Aboriginal culture gallery; East Coast - Winery Visit and Wine Tasting; Richmond - Town Stopover
    Optional: None listed
  • Special information
Please attend the welcome meeting, as insurance details and next-of-kin information are collected then. If you will be late, let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Travel time is approximately 4 hours.
  • From Bicheno, drive to Freycinet National Park, where pink granite peaks, clear water and white sand shape one of Tasmania's best-known coastal landscapes. Walk with your leader to Wineglass Bay Lookout, then choose whether to continue down to the beach for a swim if conditions and energy allow. After lunch, take the short Cape Tourville Lighthouse and Lookout walk for wide views over the coastline before returning to Bicheno. In the evening, you may choose a guided Little Penguin tour as the birds return to their rookeries.
  • Accommodation

  • Meals
    Lunch
  • Included / optional activities

Optional: Bicheno - Bicheno Penguin Tour - from AUD74; Freycinet National Park - Wineglass Bay Beach Walk and Swim - Free
  • Special information
Travel time is approximately 3 hours. The Wineglass Bay Lookout walk is a Grade 3, 3 km return walk taking about 1.5 hours, with gradual uphill sections and some steeper parts. Continuing to Wineglass Bay beach adds another 3 km and about 1.5 hours on a trail with many steps and rough sections. Cape Tourville Lighthouse and Lookout is a Grade 1, 600 m walk, mostly on raised boardwalk, taking about 20 minutes. If you want the penguin tour, book directly with the operator well ahead of time because it can sell out.
  • Leave Bicheno and follow the Great Eastern Drive to Tasmania's northeast, home to the Bay of Fires. This conservation area is known for white beaches, protected coastal heath, wildlife and granite rocks lit up by vivid orange lichen. Join your leader for a beach walk along one of the bays, then continue inland toward Sheffield. Once a hydroelectric hub, Sheffield is now a mural town with more than 140 works painted around its streets. The evening is free to explore and spot the stories on the walls.

This ancient forest holds wildlife, plant life and habitats found nowhere else, with biological roots reaching back to Gondwana. Return to Strahan in the late afternoon. If you would rather stay in Strahan, you may opt out of the Tarkine day trip and book a Gordon River cruise instead at your own expense.

Follow the Franklin River Nature Trail and the Nelson Falls boardwalk, both easy ways to feel the forest and river country up close. Continue to Lake St Clair, Australia's deepest freshwater lake, then cross the Central Plateau and Derwent Valley on the return to Hobart. The trip ends on arrival in Hobart around 6 pm.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
Tasmania is bigger than it looks on a map. This trip is designed to cover a lot in six days, so several travel days are long. The route does not include much time in Hobart, so travelers who want to explore the capital properly should add time before or after the trip.

There is plenty of walking on varied terrain. Most walks are short or moderate, and joining a walk is always your choice, but the trip is best suited to travelers with good mobility and a reasonable fitness level. Sturdy walking shoes and comfortable outdoor clothing are strongly recommended.

Tasmania's weather can shift quickly, especially in mountain areas and at higher elevations. Nights can be cold, and snowfall is possible near the start or end of the season. Pack for warm, cold, dry and wet conditions rather than assuming one kind of weather.

Travelers wanting a different pace can choose from other Tasmania routes, including shorter or longer Comfort-style trips and more walking-focused itineraries.

Visa information tools may help, but they may not include every full entry requirement or service fee. Travelers are responsible for checking the rules for their own passport.

Accommodation
Accommodation is hotel-based for five nights. The accommodation style shown in the itinerary is a guide and may change if preferred properties are unavailable. If a change is needed, a similar standard will be used whenever possible.

Properties are asked to prepare rooms before the group arrives, especially when arrival is earlier than normal check-in. Immediate check-in is not always possible, so luggage may be stored while the group explores or waits for rooms.
Joining point
Joining point: Travelodge Hobart, 167 Macquarie Street, Hobart, Australia.

From Hobart Airport, airport code HBA, you can take the twice-hourly Skybus transfer to stop 4 on Collins Street. Ask the driver to announce your stop; from there, it is about a 5-minute walk to the hotel. A taxi or Uber from the airport usually takes 25 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

Important notes

The trip starts in Hobart with a 9:30 am welcome meeting on Day 1 at the joining point hotel.

The trip finishes back in Hobart on Day 6 at around 6 pm. Accommodation is not included on the final night, but extra accommodation can be requested.

A single supplement may be available if you prefer your own room, subject to availability.

Tasmania involves longer drives than many travelers expect, so read the daily itinerary carefully and come prepared for road time.

This trip includes walking on varied terrain and is best enjoyed with sturdy shoes, flexible layers and enough mobility for nature trails.

Tasmanian temperatures can fluctuate, especially at night and at higher altitude. Pack for cold, wet, dry and warmer weather, even if the forecast looks simple.
