COOBER PEDY, ARKAROOLA, WILPENA

Opal Roads and Outback Stars

This 10-day South Australia Outback adventure starts and ends in Adelaide, then heads deep into salt lakes, opal country, desert roads, wildlife sanctuary landscapes, Flinders Ranges gorges and Clare Valley wine country. It is a big overland trip with long drives, remote places and the kind of Outback scale you only understand once the road keeps going.

The route includes Port Augusta, Woomera, Lake Hart, Coober Pedy, Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, William Creek, the Oodnadatta Track, Lake Eyre, Marree, Farina, Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, Wilpena Pound, Sacred Canyon and Clare Valley. Along the way, expect underground rooms, kangaroo rescue stories, Adnyamathanha culture, starry skies, rough gravel roads, optional hikes and a proper taste of South Australia's inland character.

Why You'll Love This Trip

Why you'll love this trip
  • Coober Pedy Underground
Sleep below the surface in Australia's opal capital, where underground living makes perfect sense.
  • Oodnadatta Track Dust
Ride one of Australia's legendary Outback roads through springs, salt lakes and remote stops.
  • Arkaroola Night Sky
Stay where light pollution disappears and the stars feel close enough to touch.
  • Sacred Canyon Culture
Walk with an Adnyamathanha guide and hear stories carried through sandstone, plants and place.
  • Clare Valley Finish
Come back toward Adelaide through vineyard country with Riesling, silo art and softer roads.
  • Outback Wildlife Stops
Meet rescued kangaroos, watch for rock wallabies and feel how alive the desert can be.
This is South Australia with the volume turned up: opals, salt, gravel roads, ancient ranges and wine at the end. It is remote, dusty and sometimes bumpy, but that is exactly why it lands so deeply.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
This trip travels through remote South Australia, including areas where phone reception may disappear for long stretches. Food choices can be limited, and not every dietary need can always be met in the same way it might be in a city.

Road conditions can change with rain, extreme heat or wind, especially around Coober Pedy and the Oodnadatta Track. Your leader will check conditions ahead and may adjust the route if it is not safe for the vehicle to continue. In some cases, the group may need to backtrack from Coober Pedy toward Port Augusta, so travelers should have access to emergency funds.

There is significant time in a private vehicle with the group. Space can feel tight, and some travel days are long, but the overland distance is part of what makes the Outback feel real.

Summer departures can bring extreme heat. Bring serious sun protection, wear light long sleeves and carry at least 2 liters of water when exploring. The vehicle is air-conditioned, but high temperatures can still be challenging. In hot months, departure times may be moved earlier, the group may rest during the hottest part of the day and activities may resume later.

Winter nights in the Outback can be very cold. A warm jacket, beanie, gloves and scarf may be useful, while daytime temperatures are often good for exploring. Some restaurants, cafes, tours and attractions may close during off-season summer months, so choose your departure date carefully.

Travelers who want to keep exploring South Australia may also consider Kangaroo Island options before or after this route.

Visa information tools may help, but they may not include all entry requirements or every fee. Travelers are responsible for checking the rules for their own passport.

Accommodation
Accommodation includes one hotel night, four cabin nights, two nights in an underground hotel and two nights at a resort. The accommodation shown in the itinerary is a guide and may change if preferred properties are unavailable. If that happens, a similar standard will be used whenever possible.

Properties are asked to prepare rooms before the group arrives, especially when arrival is earlier than normal check-in. Immediate check-in is not always possible, so luggage may be stored while the group explores or waits for rooms.
Joining point
Joining point: Tom's Court Hotel, 338 King William Street, Adelaide, Australia.

From Adelaide Airport, airport code ADL, take city bus J1 or J2 to stop F1 on Grenfell Street in Adelaide's CBD. The ride usually takes about 25 minutes and can be paid by contactless card. From there, walk about 15 minutes down King William Street to the hotel. A taxi or Uber from the airport usually takes around 20 minutes, depending on traffic.
