KANGAROO ISLAND WILDERNESS

Wild Island Footsteps

This 5-day walking trip starts and ends in Adelaide, then crosses by ferry to Kangaroo Island for a guided hike through one of South Australia's wildest coastal landscapes. The route follows sections of the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail, with forest paths, sandy tracks, limestone cliffs, empty bays, sea views and wind-shaped landmarks along the way.

Expect active days, simple comfort and a real trail feeling. You will walk to Snake Lagoon, follow the coast toward Cape Du Couedic, visit the lighthouse and seal colony, stand among Remarkable Rocks, hike through fire-regenerating Mallee forest and finish the trail near Kelly Caves before returning to Adelaide.

Why You'll Love This Trip

Why you'll love this trip
  • Wilderness Trail Focus
Spend five days around Kangaroo Island's signature walking route with local leaders guiding the way.
  • Snake Lagoon Start
Follow forest and coastal vegetation toward Snake Lagoon, where the trail begins to open up.
  • Cape Lighthouse Drama
Reach Cape Du Couedic for lighthouse history, seal sightings and Southern Ocean weather.
  • Remarkable Rocks Moment
Stand among orange-lichen granite boulders shaped by wind and sea for millions of years.
  • Wildlife On Foot
Watch for kangaroos, echidnas, wallabies, seabirds, dolphins and seals from the trail.
  • Fire Recovery Landscapes
Walk through Mallee forest and heath where orchids and regrowth show the island's comeback.
This is Kangaroo Island the slow way: boots on dirt, salt in the air and wild coastline carrying the week. It is demanding enough to feel earned, but never loses its sense of wonder.

Look for bottlenose dolphins below and seabirds overhead as the route moves toward Cape Du Couedic Lighthouse, built between 1906 and 1909. Spend time around the lighthouse area and the local seal colony, then continue toward Wiers Cove, a beautiful bay framed by calcarenite cliffs. The walk finishes at Remarkable Rocks, where massive granite boulders glow with orange lichen above the sea.
