SYDNEY, BYRON, BRISBANE

Harbour Roads and Byron Light

This 7-day East Coast Australia trip runs from Sydney to Brisbane, trading big-city harbor views for wine country, koala care, rainforest walks, surf towns and Queensland sunshine. It is a compact road trip through New South Wales and into Queensland, with stops in the Hunter Valley, Crowdy Bay National Park, Port Macquarie, Dorrigo National Park, Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay, Springbrook National Park and the Gold Coast.

The pace is easygoing but full. You will walk The Rocks with an Aboriginal guide, taste wine in the Hunter Valley, look for kangaroos near coastal trails, visit the Koala Hospital, spend time in ancient rainforest and slow down for a free day in Byron Bay before finishing in Brisbane.

Tour program
  • Start in Sydney, or Warrane, on Gadigal Country. Meet the group outside the starting hotel at 9 am, then head straight into The Rocks for a guided Aboriginal walk. Around the harbor foreshore, your guide will connect the old lanes, shoreline and views of the Harbour Bridge with First Nations history, land use, water use and spiritual connection to Country. After time for lunch, leave the city and drive north to the Hunter Valley. At a winery, sit down for a guided tasting and hear about the estate, the region and the wines in your glass. Continue to Cessnock for the night, with the option to join the group for dinner.

  • Special information
Pickup is at 9 am in front of the starting point hotel. Please be on time because the group leaves for the walking tour right away. Spending the previous night in Sydney is strongly recommended. The Rocks Dreaming Tour is a join-in experience, so travelers outside the group may also take part.
  • Follow the coast north and stop in Crowdy Bay National Park for the Diamond Head Loop Walk. The trail moves through heathland, paperbark and swamp mahogany, with beach views, rocky headlands and cliffs that can glitter in the sun from quartz crystals. Keep watch for kangaroos around the open areas and, when the season lines up, whales or dolphins offshore. Later, continue to Port Macquarie for the night.

  • Begin at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, where volunteers share how the organization treats and rehabilitates koalas. From there, continue to Bellingen for free time and lunch at your own pace, then follow Waterfall Way toward Dorrigo National Park. This rainforest country is part of an ancient Gondwana landscape, with plant and animal life that reaches far back in time. Visit the Rainforest Centre, step out onto the skywalk or explore the forest trails with the group before continuing to Coffs Harbour.

  • Before reaching Byron Bay, join a local First Nations guide for a Red Rock walking experience connected to Gumbaynggirr Country. Through stories, songs and native plant knowledge, the walk follows waterways around the Solitary Islands Marine Park and gives the coastline a richer sense of place. Continue to Yamba, where you can find lunch, then head for Byron Bay. Stop at the lighthouse for wide ocean views and a chance to spot dolphins, whales or other marine life before settling into Byron's laid-back surf-town rhythm.

  • Today is deliberately loose. Wake early for sunrise if that is your kind of morning, or sleep in and let Byron set the pace. You might book a beginner surf lesson, paddle through Byron Bay Marine Park on a guided kayak tour, join a yoga class, swim, browse shops, linger at a café or do very little near the beach. The food and bar scene here is strong, so your leader can point the group toward good dinner options if everyone feels social.

In the afternoon, trade rainforest green for the beach energy of Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, then continue to Brisbane for the final night.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
This route covers about 1000 km, or 620 miles, in seven days. Some days involve several hours on the road, but the overland travel is part of the experience, giving you changing coast, forest, farm country and town life along the way.

The itinerary forms part of longer East Coast combination trips, so some travelers may continue beyond Brisbane on a broader Australia journey.

Visa tools can be useful, but they may not show every entry requirement or every possible fee. Travelers should check the rules for their own passport before departure.

Accommodation
Accommodation is a mix of hotels and cabins. The accommodation listed in the daily itinerary is a guide, and a similar standard may be used if preferred properties are unavailable.

Hotels and cabin properties are asked to prepare rooms before arrival, especially when the group reaches a place before normal check-in. Immediate check-in is not always possible, so luggage may be stored while the group explores or waits for rooms.
Joining point
Joining point: Ibis Hotel Sydney Barangaroo, 22 Shelley Street, Sydney, Australia.

From Sydney Airport, airport code SYD, take the T8 train to Wynyard railway station and walk a short distance to the hotel. You can pay with a contactless card or buy a single ticket. The train usually takes about 25 minutes and runs from both international and domestic terminals. A taxi or Uber from the airport usually takes about 20 minutes, depending on traffic.
