NINGALOO REEF, SHELLS, PINNACLES

Reef Roads and Pink Lagoons

This 7-day Western Australia trip runs south from Exmouth to Perth, following a wild stretch of coast where reef, desert and saltwater country keep changing the view. Start near Ningaloo Reef, walk Mandu Mandu Gorge, snorkel Oyster Stacks, cruise Coral Bay by glass-bottom boat, visit Shell Beach in Shark Bay and finish with Kalbarri, Hutt Lagoon and the Pinnacles Desert.

It is a nature-first road trip with hotel stays, big driving days and plenty of time outside. You will cover serious distance, but the payoff is a coast that feels wonderfully unpolished: turquoise water, shell-white beaches, pink lake color, limestone formations and nights where the Indian Ocean never feels far away.

Why You'll Love This Trip

Why you'll love this trip
  • Ningaloo From Above
See reef country from Mandu Mandu Gorge before snorkeling Oyster Stacks at high tide.
  • Coral Bay Turtles
Cruise clear water by glass-bottom boat, watching for turtles, fish and coral below.
  • Shell Beach Stop
Stand on a beach made almost entirely of tiny white shells in Shark Bay.
  • Gutharraguda Stories
Hear Shark Bay history, didgeridoo and bush tucker traditions with a Traditional Custodian.

  • Pink Lagoon Finish

Tour program
  • Welcome to Exmouth, a small North West Cape town and one of the main gateways to Ningaloo Marine Park. The trip begins with an 8:30 am pick-up, then heads straight into Cape Range National Park for the Mandu Mandu Gorge walk. Climb toward the rim for wide views across Ningaloo Reef and the surrounding country, keeping watch for black-flanked rock wallabies and birds of prey. Afterward, snorkel Oyster Stacks, a group of five islets rising from the reef that can only be reached at high tide. Expect shallow coral gardens, schools of fish and the chance of turtles or reef sharks cruising past. Later, continue to Coral Bay for the night.

  • Special information
Be on time this morning, as the group leaves town right after the welcome meeting. Travel time is approximately 3.5 hours. Walking distance is approximately 3 km on a Grade 4, moderately difficult trail. Swimming with whale sharks is not included and must be booked before the trip starts. Whale shark experiences can sell out far in advance, and whale sharks are usually in the region from mid-March to mid-September only. Book any whale shark experience for a date before Day 1.
  • Spend the morning on a three-hour glass-bottom boat tour around Coral Bay. Look through the clear water for turtles feeding among the coral, watch schools of fish gather below the boat and, if conditions allow, snorkel in two different spots off the boat. The afternoon is free. Keep it low-key on the sand, go for a swim or head back into the water for more Ningaloo Reef snorkeling.

Later, arrive in Shark Bay and settle into your Monkey Mia resort accommodation for the evening.

Tonight, gather around the campfire for fresh seafood or bush tucker cooked over the fire. • Special information
First Nations people may have complex community obligations, and today's cultural experience may sometimes be cancelled at short notice because of cultural commitments.
  • Continue south to Kalbarri National Park. Walk the Eagle Bluff Boardwalk for views over the harbor, limestone islands and coastal wildlife. Rays, sharks and turtles are sometimes seen from here. Later, explore Kalbarri's Skywalk and Nature's Window, where red rock and river country give the day a completely different feel from the reef and beach landscapes earlier in the trip.

  • Wake up in Kalbarri and continue exploring the coast with lookouts such as Natural Bridge, a limestone arch still attached to the shoreline. Then travel toward Geraldton, stopping at Hutt Lagoon on the way. The lagoon's unusually high salinity can create vivid pink and lilac tones, making it one of Western Australia's most unexpected roadside scenes.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
This trip is also offered in the opposite direction. Check carefully that the southbound Exmouth-to-Perth route is the one you want before booking flights and extra accommodation.

You will need a moderate to good level of fitness. The trip includes nature walks, uneven ground and time outdoors in exposed coastal and desert environments. Bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothing.

Western Australia can be very hot during the day and much cooler at night, depending on the season. Pack layers, sun protection and clothing that works for both warm daytime conditions and cooler evenings.

The state is huge, and a few days involve long drives. The changing scenery is part of the experience, but travelers should be comfortable spending several hours in a private vehicle.

Visa information tools can be helpful, but they may not show every full entry requirement or service fee. Travelers are responsible for checking the rules for their passport before travel.

Accommodation
Accommodation is hotel-based for 6 nights. The accommodation style shown in the daily itinerary is a guide and may change if preferred properties are unavailable. If a change is needed, a similar standard will be used whenever possible.

Hotels are asked to prepare rooms before the group arrives, especially on days when arrival is earlier than normal check-in. Immediate check-in is not always possible, so luggage may be stored while the group explores or waits for rooms.
Joining point
Joining point: Potshot Hotel Resort, 561 Murat Road, Exmouth, Australia.

The trip begins on Day 1 with an 8:30 am pick-up from the joining point location. Because the group leaves town right away, plan to be at the pick-up point on time and consider arriving in Exmouth the day before.

The trip ends on the final day when the group arrives in Perth at around 6 pm. Keep this in mind when booking onward flights or other travel.

A single supplement may be available if you prefer your own room, subject to availability.

Swimming with whale sharks is not included in the trip price. It is an optional experience that should be booked before the trip starts because spaces can sell out well in advance.
