This 11-day Western Australia overland trip starts and ends in Broome, heading deep into the Kimberley by private 4WD. It is built for travelers who want the Outback with dust on their boots: Tunnel Creek, Windjana Gorge, Manning Falls, El Questro, Lake Argyle, Purnululu National Park and the striped domes of the Bungle Bungles.

The trip is hands-on and outdoorsy. You will camp, help with simple camp routines, swim in gorges, walk rocky trails, ride long stretches of remote road and sleep under a sky that feels impossibly wide. Comfort is basic, but the reward is big country, quiet nights and landscapes most visitors to Australia never reach.

  • Welcome to Broome, also known as Rubibi in the language of the Yawuru people, the Traditional Custodians of this land. The trip starts early and heads straight into Kimberley country. Cross the Fitzroy River, stop in Derby to see the Boab Prison Tree, visit Norval Art Gallery and continue along the Gibb River Road toward Dimalurru, also called Tunnel Creek. At Tunnel Creek, explore a 750 m cave system carved through the Napier Range, watching for stalactites, bats and freshwater crocodiles while hearing the story of Jandamarra, a First Nations freedom fighter who used these caves as a hideout in the late 1800s. Tonight, camp near Windjana Gorge under a dark Outback sky.

    Be on time this morning, as the trip begins straight away. Check the joining point instructions for where to meet your leader. Travel time is approximately 6 to 7 hours, and walking distance is approximately 2 km or 1 hour. The longest uninterrupted drive is around 2.5 hours from Derby to Tunnel Creek, with no toilet facilities on the way. Tunnel Creek Trail is Grade 5 and difficult, with loose rock, uneven surfaces, rock hopping, waist-deep water, submerged rocks and a short swim in complete darkness. Some sections require three points of contact. Pack swimwear, towel, head torch and closed-toe wet shoes in your day pack before leaving Broome, as your main luggage will be stowed in the vehicle. Tonight's campsite requires you to set up your own provided dome tent, or you may sleep in a swag under the stars. Facilities are basic and showers are solar heated. There is no chance to buy alcohol between Broome and Kununurra. Buy any drinks in Broome before departure and bring cans only, as glass can break on the corrugated Gibb River Road.
  • Start in the ancient Napier Range, more than 350 million years old, and walk through Windjana Gorge. Look for freshwater crocodiles, birdlife and signs of Indigenous bush tucker beneath the gorge walls. Later, travel to Bell Gorge, also known as Dalmanyi, one of the West Kimberley's most striking places for waterfalls and clear pools. Follow the Bell Gorge Trail to Dalmanyi Falls, then take time at the top of the falls or continue along the creek above the falls if conditions and your energy allow.

    Travel time is approximately 5 to 6 hours. Hiking distance is approximately 5 km or 4 hours on Grade 2 and Grade 4 trails. Windjana Gorge Trail is an easy Grade 2 return walk of about 2 km, taking around 1 hour, with rough surfaces and possible moderate hills. Bell Gorge Trail is a challenging Grade 4 walk with a steep downhill section, loose uneven ground, a small creek crossing, rocky dry creek bed and a climb to the top of Dalmanyi Falls. The optional Falls Trail extension is Grade 5 and difficult, crossing slippery submerged rocks above the falls in fast-flowing water and requiring three points of contact on the descent. You will spend two nights at a private safari camp at Mount Barnett Station near Manning Gorge. The camp has large raised-platform tents with twin stretcher beds, mattresses, a sheltered kitchen area, nearby hot showers and flush toilets. A diesel generator runs at camp and is turned off at 9 pm.
  • Head to Manning Gorge and take on the Manning Falls Trail. The route begins with a river crossing, then follows the Manning River toward the falls. Once there, swim in the deep clear pool or climb to the top of the waterfall for views over Mount Barnett Station. In the afternoon, visit Galvans Gorge. A short bushwalk leads to cool water, a waterfall and rock walls marked with Wandjina rock art beside the main pool.

    Travel time is approximately 2 hours. Hiking distance is approximately 6.6 km or 4 hours on Grade 4 and Grade 3 trails. Manning Falls Trail is a challenging Grade 4 walk of about 5.6 km and 3 hours. It starts with a swim across the Manning River of about 300 m, then continues over rough, rocky ground with steep sections and rock hopping. The trail becomes harder near the end and has very little shade. Galvans Gorge Trail is a moderate Grade 3 return walk of about 1 km, taking around 1 hour without swim time. Expect short steep hills, rough ground and some rock hopping.
  • Today is mostly about the road. Settle in for the famous Gibb River Road, where the rough track, red dirt and wide Kimberley views are part of the experience. Stop at Pentecost River Lookout for views over the river floodplain and the tabletop Cockburn Ranges. By evening, reach El Questro and settle into camp with time to unwind by the fire.

Shared facilities nearby have hot showers and flush toilets. Dinner is not included tonight and is at your own expense. The El Questro Station bar serves burgers and pizza. Depending on the timing of the day, this non-included meal may happen tomorrow instead, or at Lake Argyle where there is a pub menu. Your leader will advise.
  • After breakfast, walk the Emma Gorge Trail, known for its 120 m cliff face of Cockburn and quartz sandstone, clear pools and waterfalls. Look for ripple marks in the rocks, left from shallow tidal waters millions of years ago. Then take a shorter walk through Livistona and pandanus palms to Zebedee Springs, where natural thermal rock pools sit below the cliff. The afternoon is free. You might cruise Chamberlain Gorge, join a bush tucker or birding experience, or simply enjoy El Questro at your own speed.

    Hiking distance is approximately 3.8 km or 2.5 hours on Grade 4 and Grade 2 trails. Emma Gorge Trail is a challenging Grade 4 return walk of about 3.2 km, taking around 2 hours, with some steep sections, loose and slippery rocks and rock hopping near the end. Bring swimwear, as this is a great place to cool off. Zebedee Springs Trail is an easy Grade 2 return walk of about 600 m, taking around 30 minutes before swim time. The afternoon is free for optional activities. The Chamberlain Gorge Cruise can sell out well in advance, so pre-booking directly with El Questro is recommended.
  • Drive to Kununurra this morning and spend some free time around the shops, galleries or a local cafe. If timing works, your leader may offer the option to visit Hoochery Distillery, known for local rum, or Zebra Rock Gallery, which showcases regional Zebra Rock pieces. Later, continue to Lake Argyle, the huge reservoir at the center of the Ord River Irrigation System. This lake changed a dry landscape into an agricultural oasis, and the camp infinity pool is a tempting place to cool off.

  • Enjoy a slower morning before traveling down the Great Northern Highway to Purnululu National Park, home of the Bungle Bungles. This UNESCO World Heritage landscape is known for orange and black striped beehive-like formations shaped by rivers over roughly 20 million years. On arrival, settle into your private permanent tented camp and take in the views of the Bungles Massif and the Kimberley night sky from your door.

The dirt track from Spring Creek into the Bungle Bungles is only 50 km but takes about 2 hours because it is winding and corrugated, and it can sometimes take longer. Tonight's permanent tented camp has nearby modern facilities, a covered dining deck with panoramic views and an open-air campfire.
  • Spend the morning at Echidna Chasm, where Livistona palms rise between steep gorge walls and orange-red rock glows when the light hits it. Take in views toward the Osmand Range, then continue to Cathedral Gorge. This natural amphitheater is known for its towering rock walls and remarkable acoustics. Later, there may be time for an optional scenic helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungles' beehive domes.

    Hiking distance is approximately 4 km or 3 hours on Grade 4 trails. Echidna Chasm Walk is a Grade 4 return walk of about 2 km, taking under 1 hour, with steep-sided gorge walls up to 200 m high and barely 1 m wide in places. The trail is natural rock and requires some moderate climbing. The walk to Cathedral Gorge is also Grade 4, about 2 km return, usually taking 1 to 2 hours, on an unmodified rocky trail. Optional helicopter flights can be booked through your leader, who holds spaces with the operator and coordinates timing around the day's other activities.
  • Travel to Fitzroy Crossing, named for the Martuwarra, or Fitzroy River. The Fitzroy Valley is home to more than 40 Aboriginal communities and five language groups: Bunuba, Gooniyandi, Nyikina, Wangkatjunka and Walmajarri. Stop near Halls Creek to see China Wall, a natural white limestone formation that looks like a miniature Great Wall. If time allows, stop at Mary's Pool for lunch before continuing to camp by the Fitzroy River.

  • This morning, join the Darlgunya Cultural Walk with a local Aboriginal guide. Walk through remnants of the old postal settlement and down toward the Fitzroy Riverbanks while learning about the wild Fitzroy River, local plants, wildlife and cultural significance. Stop for an optional lunch on the way back to Broome. The trip ends when you arrive in Broome late this afternoon.

Is this trip right for you?
This trip includes a lot of walking on uneven, rocky and sometimes wet terrain. It is best for travelers with good mobility, solid balance and a reasonable fitness level. Hiking boots with ankle support, closed-toe water shoes, sun protection, warm layers for evenings and possibly walking poles are strongly recommended.

This is a camping trip with simple facilities. The lack of creature comforts is part of the Outback experience, but it will not suit travelers who need hotel-style ease every night. On camping nights, solo travelers have their own tent. In permanent tented camps, solo travelers are usually paired with another traveler of the same gender.

Some days involve several hours of driving through very remote parts of Australia. Vehicle space can feel tight, conditions may be bumpy and there are some very early mornings. The upside is access to landscapes that are difficult to reach any other way.

Visa information tools may help with guidance, but they may not show every full entry requirement or service fee. Travelers are responsible for checking the rules that apply to their passport.

Accommodation
Accommodation is a mix of camping, permanent tented camps and eco safari camp accommodation with shared facilities. Nights 1, 6, 7 and 10 use camping in national parks or at Lake Argyle and Fitzroy River Lodge, with dome tents or swags, fitted sheets, pillows and shared facilities with hot showers and flush toilets.

Nights 2 and 3 are at a private safari camp near Manning Gorge, with raised-platform tents, twin stretcher beds, mattresses, a sheltered kitchen area and nearby shared bathrooms. Nights 4 and 5 are at a private camp at El Questro with similar raised-platform tents and shared facilities.

Nights 8 and 9 are in Purnululu National Park at a permanent tented camp with views of the Bungles Massif, modern shared facilities, a covered dining deck and an open-air campfire.

A single supplement is not available on the default version of the trip. Camping Plus upgrades may be requested for nights 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10, subject to availability and extra cost. The upgrade can also be booked with a single supplement for those nights. Upgrade examples include permanent tents at El Questro, standard rooms at Lake Argyle Resort and safari tents at Fitzroy River Lodge.

The default pick-up time is 7:00 am at Kimberley Travellers Lodge. This is the default meeting point unless you or your travel agent request an alternative pick-up location in advance.

If you want a different pick-up point, contact the reservations team well before departure. Travelers are responsible for being at the correct pick-up point on time, and missed tours are not covered if an alternate pick-up was not arranged in advance.

Important notes

The trip starts in Broome with an early 7:00 am pick-up on Day 1 at Kimberley Travellers Lodge, unless you request an alternate pick-up at least 14 days before departure.

The tour finishes in Broome late afternoon or early evening on the last day. Arriving in Broome one day before departure is strongly recommended, and onward travel should be booked for the following day rather than the final tour day.

Accommodation is twin-share and uses a mix of pop-up tents and permanent tents with stretcher beds and mattresses. Bring your own sleeping bag or arrange one in advance. A pillow, pillowcase and bottom sheet are provided.

A single supplement is not available on the standard version. Solo travelers are paired with another traveler of the same gender where required. Camping Plus upgrades for nights 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10 may be available by request and at extra cost, and those upgraded nights can also be booked with a single supplement.

Departures depend on regional weather and road conditions. Road closures are more likely around April and October or November.

Vehicle space is limited. Pack only essentials in a small soft bag, with a maximum weight of 15 kg. Suitcases are not suitable. Extra luggage must be left in Broome or sent onward.

This is participatory camping. Travelers help set up camp, and the leader may ask one or two people to assist with meal preparation or clearing up. Camps must be left as they were found so the Kimberley stays protected for future travelers.

Tell the team about dietary requirements and allergies at least 2 weeks before departure. Broome's remote location means some food items cannot be arranged at short notice, and dietary changes cannot be made once the trip has started.
