RHINOS, HIPPOS, MAASAI, BIG CATS

Mara Roads and Rift Valley Wildlife

This 8-day Kenya safari is all about the road, the camps and the wildlife that suddenly makes everyone go quiet. You start in Nairobi, head into the Great Rift Valley for Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha, spend a night with Maasai hosts in Loita Hills and finish with 4WD game drives across the open plains of the Maasai Mara.

It is not a polished lodge safari. It is an overland trip with tents, early starts, dusty roads, camp dinners and the kind of wildlife days that feel even better because you earned them.

Why you'll love this trip

  • Lake Nakuru Rhinos
Search early for black and white rhinos while the park is still waking up.
  • Naivasha By Boat
Glide past hippos, fish eagles, papyrus reeds and quiet acacia-lined lake edges.
  • Village Cooking Night
Cook with local hosts near Nakuru, then share dinner back at camp after sunset.
  • Loita Hills Culture
Camp near Maasai hosts and hear stories from warriors, elders and local women.
  • Maasai Mara Drives
Explore famous savanna country by 4WD, watching for lions, cheetahs, elephants and giraffes.
  • Balloon Sunrise Option
Add a dawn balloon ride over the Mara for wide plains and soft morning light.
This is Kenya with the big moments included, but the smaller human details kept in the picture. The trip works because it balances movement, context and enough breathing room to actually enjoy where you are.

Tour program
  • Welcome to Kenya. Your trip begins in Nairobi with a 6 pm welcome meeting, where you meet your leader and the rest of the group. If you arrive early, you can join the optional Nairobi City Experience Urban Adventure, a four-hour introduction to the city that includes lunch at a local restaurant. After the meeting, you may want to go out for dinner with the group and start settling into the safari mood.
  • Accommodation
    Hotel - 1 night
  • Meals
    None listed
  • Optional activities
    • Nairobi - City Experience Urban Adventure - USD45
  • Special information
Please attend the welcome meeting, as your leader will collect insurance details and emergency contact information. If you will be late, contact your travel agent or hotel reception. Ask reception or check the lobby notice for the meeting location. Petty theft can be an issue in Nairobi, especially for new arrivals. Your leader will cover practical safety advice, but it is smart to ask locally where to walk, keep valuables secured in a money belt or neck wallet and stay alert in public places, including indoors.
  • Drive northwest from Nairobi through Great Rift Valley scenery, passing views toward Lake Naivasha and Elementaita on the way to Lake Nakuru National Park. The park is one of Kenya's best places for rhino sightings, which you will look for on tomorrow morning's game drive. Today, visit a nearby village with your leader and get a closer look at everyday life in the area. Join a cooking class, then return later to share the meal for dinner.

  • Wake early for a light breakfast, then head into Lake Nakuru National Park for a game drive in the overland vehicle. Rhinos are the headline here, and if conditions are kind, you may get a strong chance to see and photograph one. After returning to camp for lunch, continue to Lake Naivasha, one of the few freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley. The lake is fringed with papyrus, flat-topped acacias and birdlife, with hippos often nearby.

  • Head out by boat on Lake Naivasha, one of the best ways to feel the quiet richness of this freshwater ecosystem. With an experienced local guide, look for hippos, kingfishers, fish eagles, herons, giraffes, zebras and waterbucks along the shore. The lake sits below the Eburru volcanic range and is framed by acacia trees. Afterward, the day is free. On arrival, you will be welcomed with traditional warrior song and dance, then learn about Maasai warrior training. The flight may move low over the trees or higher above the plains, depending on conditions, and ends with a bush breakfast before you return to camp.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
This is an overland safari, which means you travel in a purpose-built group vehicle, help with camp life and spend several nights in tents. The truck does not have air conditioning, but it does have drop-down windows, which are great for airflow and wildlife viewing.

Drive days can be long, and early mornings are part of the deal. Safari timing often starts before the heat and before the wildlife disappears into the shade, so expect some pre-dawn or early breakfast starts.

Loita Hills uses a secure bush camp with basic facilities, hot bucket showers in the morning and no Wi-Fi. The comfort level is simple, but the cultural access is the reason for staying there.

This trip is best for travelers who are comfortable with camping, shared facilities, dust, flexible timing and the occasional bump in the road. If you want a high-comfort lodge safari, this is probably not the right fit.
Visa information
Visa details are provided through Sherpa, a third-party service. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements, not full entry visas. Additional service fees apply if you purchase a visa via Sherpa.
Accommodation
Accommodation includes 5 nights camping with facilities, 1 hotel night and 1 night camping with basic facilities. Most camping is in two-person canvas dome tents with camping mattresses supplied.

African overland accommodation varies by route and location. Some campsites have showers and flush toilets, while others are much simpler. Bathroom standards may be more basic than many US travelers are used to, and toilet paper is not always provided.

Occasionally, the group may camp on the grounds of a hotel or campsite where rooms or cabins are available. If upgrades are possible, they usually cost approximately USD40-100 per twin room per night and cannot be pre-booked. View the room before paying for an upgrade, as standards vary.

Spare tents may sometimes be carried in the vehicle, but they cannot be used without purchasing a single supplement.

The joining hotel is Hillpark Hotel, Lower Hill Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi 0100, Kenya. The hotel has an outdoor heated swimming pool, restaurant, bar, 24-hour front desk, room service, gym and complimentary Wi-Fi. Rooms include coffee-making facilities and a flat-screen TV.

Important notes

1. A single supplement may be available if you prefer not to share a room or tent. It applies to all nights and is subject to availability, so ask your booking agent for details.

2. This trip ends on arrival in Nairobi on Day 8. Please do not book an international flight departing before 6 pm that evening.

3. An optional sunrise balloon ride over the Maasai Mara is possible on this itinerary. Space is limited because the balloon holds a small number of travelers, so booking in advance is recommended.
