Whales, ice and wild silence.

Antarctica Whale Season

This 11-day EurotourClub expedition follows Antarctica's peak whale season from Ushuaia across the Drake Passage to the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula. Aboard the Ocean Albatros, you will search icy water for humpbacks, minkes, fin whales and orcas, head out by Zodiac when conditions allow, listen to polar experts on board and take part in Citizen Science through the Happy Whale project. It is a wild, camera-ready voyage built around marine life, big ice, open decks and the kind of southern silence that makes everything feel larger.

Why you'll love this trip

Tour program
  • Welcome to Ushuaia, the gateway to Antarctica. Set at the southern tip of Argentina in Tierra del Fuego, this city is often called the End of the World, though for this trip it is really the beginning. After arriving at Ushuaia Airport, take your included transfer to the hotel. If you have extra time, you might visit Tierra del Fuego National Park, walk the waterfront along the Beagle Channel or stop for handcrafted chocolate in town. Tonight, meet the group at your hotel around 5 pm and get ready for an early start tomorrow.
  • Accommodation
    Hotel - 1 night
  • Meals
There are no meals included on this day.
  • Enjoy a relaxed morning with the Andes in the background, maybe taking a final walk through downtown Ushuaia before your coach transfer to the port. This afternoon, board the Ocean Albatros, your expedition ship for the next nine nights. After meeting the Expedition Team and settling into your cabin, head to the outer decks as the ship sails through the historic Beagle Channel toward Antarctica. Inside, the excitement builds as the team shares what to expect in the days ahead.
  • Accommodation
Expedition Cruise Ship - 1 night
  • Meals
    Breakfast
    Dinner
  • Spend two days crossing the legendary Drake Passage, the stretch of water between South America and the Antarctic Peninsula. When conditions allow, step out onto the decks and scan for dolphins, whales and seabirds, including wandering albatross with their enormous wingspans. The onboard lecture program begins here too, with polar experts introducing Antarctic history, geology, biology and the wider story of the region. If weather cooperates, the first sight of the Antarctic Peninsula may appear by early evening on Day 4.
  • Accommodation
Expedition Cruise Ship - 2 nights

    Breakfast - 2
    Lunch - 2
    Dinner - 2
  • The Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands deliver the scenery people dream about: glaciated mountains, blue-white ice, open water and wildlife at every turn. Over these four expedition days, look for whales moving along the coast while penguins, seals and seabirds bring the ice to life. February and March are prime months for seeing humpbacks, minkes, fin whales and orcas feeding in the cold, nutrient-rich Southern Ocean. Sightings may happen from the ship decks, during Zodiac outings or from the bridge when the open-bridge policy allows guests into the command center. You can also join the Happy Whale Citizen Science project by uploading whale fluke photos with location details, helping researchers identify individual whales and track their movements. Optional kayaking may be available if conditions allow, and you may also have the chance to take the polar plunge. Special information: landing sites, Zodiac outings and optional activities depend on weather and ice conditions and cannot be guaranteed in advance. Kayaking must be pre-booked through your booking agent before travel.

  • As the Ocean Albatros begins the journey back toward Ushuaia, these sea days give you time to rest, sort through photos and replay the best moments of the expedition. The ship is scheduled to reach the calmer waters of the Beagle Channel by the evening of Day 10. This evening, enjoy a slideshow from the Expedition Photographer, yours to take home as a memento, then celebrate one final dinner with your fellow travelers and Expedition Team.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
The Ocean Albatros is a large, sturdy, ice-strengthened expedition ship built for unpredictable Antarctic waters. The Drake Passage and Southern Ocean can be rough, and some travelers may experience seasickness. A doctor is on board if needed, and many people find standard over-the-counter motion sickness medication helpful.

Antarctic weather can swing quickly. It may be very cold outside, then surprisingly warm when the sun breaks through, so dress in layers. Waterproof boots will be loaned to you, and an expedition jacket will be provided. Review the packing notes before departure so you are ready for cold, wind and wet Zodiac rides.

Zodiacs are a regular part of the expedition when weather allows. They can be wet and chilly, so protect both yourself and your camera gear. A fair level of mobility is needed for wet and dry landings, steep terrain, snow and uneven ground. In rough seas, elevators may be closed and stairs may be required for meals, presentations and activities.

Flexibility is essential in Antarctica. Weather and ice decide what is possible, and planned sites may change. The Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands have nearly 200 recognized landing and cruising sites, so if one location is not possible, the team will look for another worthwhile option. If rough weather keeps everyone on board, lectures, the library and the gym help keep the day full.
Visa information
Visa details are provided through Sherpa, a third-party service. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements, not full entry visas. Additional service fees apply if you purchase a visa via Sherpa.

On board, the ship keeps the polar landscape close. Cabins offer generous views, many with private balconies. Observation decks, panoramic spaces, two hydraulic viewing platforms, a sauna, spa, gym and two outdoor Jacuzzis give you plenty of ways to watch the ice, water and wildlife between excursions.
