Today is planned around the South Shetland Islands, a dramatic island chain shaped by volcanic activity, ice and wild weather. If conditions allow, you will explore by Zodiac, cruising past mountains, glaciers and shorelines where wildlife returns in force after the long Antarctic winter.
Watch for chinstrap and gentoo penguins, whales, elephant seals and fur seals. You may also stop at Deception Island, where black volcanic sand, an active caldera, the remains of a Norwegian whaling station and old scientific bases create one of the most atmospheric places in the region.
