For tourism. US citizens do not require a visa stay of up to 90 days . Your stay should not go beyond 90 days within any 180-day period.
- Passport Validity: Your passport should be valid at least six months beyond your intended date of entry.
- Registration: If your stay is to exceed 30 days, you must register at the Mongolian Immigration Agency a week after your arrival. This will be done through your hotel or tour agent.
- Our Advice: Our EurotourClub travel organizers will check the current regulations for entering the country and help with registration if necessary.
Yes, absolutely, and it is mandatory for all EurotourClub clients. Mongolia is a distant country and medical evacuation is a major concern.
- Medical & Evacuation: Your policy should cover medical evacuation (helicopter/air ambulance) in case of serious illnesses requiring transport to Ulaanbaatar or overseas.
- Activity Coverage: It should include coverage of horse riding, trekking, and off-road driving.
- Trip Protection: Coverage for trip cancellation or trip interruption is strongly suggested because of the complexity of travel arrangements.
Tipping in Mongolia is generally minimal. This is not a customary practice but has become valued within the tourism sectors, especially for guides and drivers.
- Tour Guides & Drivers: A tip for an excellent guide on an MDT will be $10-15 per customer per day. A tip for a driver will be $5-10 per day.
- Restaurants & Hotels: Not expected. In upscale hotels and tourist restaurants in Ulaanbaatar, 5 to 10% is a generous tip for good service.
- Ger Camp Staff: A small collective contribution to the camp manager as a token of appreciation for the efforts of the staff will be a good gesture.
However, it is not advisable to drink tap water in the entire country of Mongolia.
- The Universal Rule is "Drink bottled or boiled water only." Your tour operator will provide you with plenty of bottled water.
- In Ulaanbaatar: Tap water is strongly chlorinated but not advisable to drink because of different mineral composition.
- In Countryside: Always use treated or boiled water. Do not consume water from rivers or streams. Always carry a water container and water purification tablets with you.
Facilities are relatively good in Ulaanbaatar but very limited or non-existent in rural and protected areas.
- Wi-Fi: Available in most hotels in cities but can be quite slow sometimes.
- Mobile Data: This is your best option for internet access. The network is surprisingly strong along major highways, but don’t count on it in empty parts of the country.
- Disconnect: Being offline is part of what makes a true nomadic lifestyle. Let your loved ones know your itinerary ahead of time.
Yes, but it is costly to have international roaming. A local SIM card is highly recommended.
- U.S. Citizens: You will need to contact your provider for an international plan. If you are going to use a lot of data, a local SIM card is much cheaper.
- Best Local Solution: Buy a prepaid SIM card at the airport or in Ulaanbaatar from companies like Mobicom, Unitel, or Skytel. You would need your passport for registration.
- Coverage: Fair in towns, with mobile reception on improved roads; do not expect a signal in rural areas.
- The facilities vary from modern in the city to primitive in rural areas.
- Ulaanbaatar Hotels & Restaurants: Modern, Western-style flushing toilets.
- Ger Camps and Tourist Sites: Your toilet facilities will be outhouse-style pit toilets (long-drops). These are basic but typically quite clean.
- Overland Travel: You will frequently make use of the outdoors ("nature’s toilet"). Your guide will locate an appropriate site.

These items must be carried with you when you travel outside the city.
Besides routine vaccinations, there are particular recommendations for Mongolia.
- Recommended: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Rabies (due to stray dogs and livestock on the island).
- Tick-Borne Encephalitis: If your travel destination is a forested region during the spring/summer months.
- CDC Note: The plague vaccine is only recommended for those who will be in direct contact with wild animals (for example, scientists). Tourists are at very low risk.
- Government Advice: Visit a travel clinic 6-8 weeks before your trip.
Yes, it is a stable country politically, with very little violent crime. The only dangers are natural, in regard to traveling in remote wilderness regions.

- Theft: Petty theft may occur in crowded parts of Ulaanbaatar. Be cautious and use hotel safes.
- Road Safety: The roads outside of the capital are in poor condition. Overland travel can be bumpy. Only use experienced drivers.
- Weather and Environment: Weather in the steppe and desert regions can change drastically. Always follow your guide’s instructions. Be ready to face strong sunshine, strong winds, and cold nights.
- The national numbers for emergency calls are 105 for the police and 103 for an ambulance.
