No. Visitors from any nationality, including American tourists, are given a free visa that is valid for 30 days.
- Passport Validity: Your passport should be valid at least a month from your anticipated return from the Maldives, although six months prior to your departure is always advisable to avoid any airline problems.
- Requirements for Entry: You must have a confirmed hotel reservation, as well as proof of sufficient funds (either in the form of a bank statement or in cash), in order to enter the country. You must also have a return or onward flight ticket.

Yes, absolutely, and it’s mandatory for all EurotourClub guests. The medical facilities on local islands are not adequate, and evacuation might be complicated, to say the least, and extremely costly.
- Medical & Evacuation: Your insurance policy must include medical expenses and medical evacuation, preferably to a facility in either Singapore, Sri Lanka, or India.
- Coverage for Trip & Dive: The trip and dive coverage must provide for cancellation or interruption of the trip and for any of the planned water sport activities, including scuba diving.
- Proof: Keep a digital and hard copy of your insurance documents.
Tips are welcome but not obligatory. It has become a common practice in luxury resorts to tip for exemplary service.
- Resorts: A tip of $5 to $10 per day to your room attendant (left in an envelope) is common. For butlers, it's $10 to $20 per day. Tips for waiters and guides are often pooled.
- Restaurants & Spas: A service charge of 10% is usually included. A further 5-10% cash tip for good service is generous.
- Local Islands & Guesthouses: Tipping is less common but always appreciated for excellent service.
No. Tap water is not drinkable on the Maldives.
- Regarding Resorts: Your resort will offer unlimited free bottled water in your villa and at the restaurants. Some of the high-end resorts have their own water desalination plant; it is up to them to decide if the water can be drunk or not.
- On Local Islands: Only bottled water that is sealed is safe to drink. It is very affordable and available at local stores.
- Universal Rule: Bottled water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth.
Wi-Fi is available in all resorts and guest houses, though speeds may vary.
- Resorts: Free Wi-Fi is provided in all villas and public areas. Internet speed is adequate for surfing and socializing, but not ideal for streaming in overwater villas, which are far from the main island.
- Local Islands: Local guesthouses offer Wi-Fi connections; however, these are not always reliable. Acquiring a local SIM card for internet access is advisable.
- During Transfers: There will be no connectivity available for seaplane/speedboat transfers.
Yes, but international roaming charges are very high. A local SIM card is also a good choice, especially in local islands.
- For U.S. Citizens: You can get an international plan through your phone company, but be aware that it can be expensive.
- Best Local Solution: Buy a tourist SIM card (from either Dhiraigu or Ooredoo) at the airport when you arrive. Data packages are reasonable.
- Coverage: Very good on all resort islands, good on local islands.
Western-style flush toilets will be found in all resorts and airports, and you will have no problem accessing them.
- Resorts & Airport: High-quality amenities including toilet paper.
- Local Islands and Public Ferries: The amenities here are not as luxurious. Some public restrooms at local islands may have squat-type toilets. Toilet paper is not provided.
- Important Note: Because of the sensitive plumbing systems on the island, toilet paper that has been used must be disposed of in the provided waste bin and not flushed. This is an important rule that must be followed wherever you go.
Yes, and it is necessary to be respectful of local cultures.
- Island Visits in Local Areas: Day trips to nearby islands are common. Modest dress is required; shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women. Swimwear is allowed at designated "Bikini Beaches" only.
- Alcohol & Pork: Both of these are strictly banned on all local islands. Don’t bring them to the islands.
- Public Behavior: Public displays of affection are considered to be in poor taste. It is customary to ask permission before taking pictures of locals.
Yes, the Maldives is a very safe destination for tourists. The rate of crime in resorts is incredibly low. The only factors to bear in mind are sea safety and cultural norms.

- Ocean & Marine Life: Take all safety instructions seriously. The currents may be strong. Do not touch coral and marine animals (stonefish and stingrays can be dangerous).
- Local Customs: In populated local islands, liquor and public displays of affection are banned. When going out of the resort area and tourist beaches, dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees.
- Health: Sun is very strong. You will need to use high SPF sunscreen and drink plenty of water to avoid heatstroke.
