No, for tourist. Americans do not require a visa for a stay of up to 30 days.
- Passport Validity: Your passport should be valid throughout your stay in the country. Although it is not an official requirement, your passport should have at least six months’ validity when boarding flights, as this is often required by the airlines.
- Registration: If you stay in any country for more than 30 days or if you stay in an apartment (not in a hotel), you will be required to register at the local registration office. Hotels take care of this automatically.
- Our Advice: Our EurotourClub organizers will check the current entry regulations and help with any formalities that need to be completed.
Yes, absolutely, and this is compulsory for all EurotourClub guests. Medical services outside the larger cities such as Almaty and Nur-Sultan may be limited.
- Medical & Evacuation: Your plan should have provisions for medical expenses and medical evacuation, since some cases require travel to an urban area or overseas.
- Trip Protection: Make sure that it includes trip cancellation and interruption insurance.
- Adventure Insurance: In case your travel plans involve hiking, horse riding, or skiing, it is important to ensure that your insurance policy provides cover.
The habit of tipping has increased, especially in urban centers, but has not been a long-held tradition as of yet. It is, however, always a welcome gesture for good service.
- Restaurants & Cafes: In up-scale restaurants in Almaty or in Nur-Sultan, it would be advisable to tip in cash by up to 10% in case there’s no service charge. In casual eateries, it would be sufficient to round up the bill.
- Tour Guides and Drivers: A tour guide’s tip of 2,000-5,000 KZT (around 5-11 USD) for a day is quite generous. A driver’s tip of 1,000-2,000 KZ
- Taxis: Rounding up the fare to the nearest convenient amount is the norm.
It is not advisable. The tap water is not thought to be safe for consumption by foreigners.
- Universal Tips: Drink only bottled water that is sealed and available at very low costs. This applies to even brushing your teeth.
- At Hotels & Restaurants: Hotels and restaurants that are reputable will provide filtered or bottled water to make ice cubes. However, if you are unsure, it is best to ask that your drink be served without ice ("без льда" / "bez l'da").
- On the Road: Always carry bottled water with you, especially when traveling outside cities or into nature reserves.
Internet connectivity is good in the bigger cities, but in the countryside, mountains, and deserts, the internet may be slow, unreliable, or even non-existent.
- Wi-Fi: Common in hotels, cafes, and restaurants in Almaty and Nur-Sultan. Internet speed should be fine.
- Network Coverage: Do not expect any or even limited connectivity when traveling to the Altyn Emel National Park or the Altai Mountains and the steppe regions.
- Social Media: Please be aware that certain social media and messaging sites have, from time to time, encountered blockages in the past.
Yes. Buying a local SIM card is easy, and it’s the most economical way.
- For US Citizens: International roaming rates can be quite high. You should contact your carrier if you need an international plan.
- Best Local Solution: Buy a prepaid SIM card when you arrive at the airport or in the cities from Tele2/Altel, Kcell, or Beeline carriers. You will require your passport for registration. Data roaming costs are extremely low.
- Coverage: Coverage is very good in urban areas and along the highways, but it is very weak in the rural areas.
You'll find yourself using both modern toilets, which are of the Western variety, and the more traditional Asian-style squat toilets.
- Hotels, Restaurants & Airports: At urban centers as well as modern establishments, there are sit-down toilets that are equipped with toilet paper.
- Public Restrooms, Rural, and roadside stops: Squat toilets are common. Public restrooms usually cost a nominal fee (50-100 KZT) and usually do not provide toilet paper.
- Essential: Always have your own supply of toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
