Yes, absolutely, and that’s a requirement for all guests of EurotourClub. Health care in the bigger cities is good, but in remote regions, there are very limited facilities, and evacuation costs are exorbitant.
- Medical and Evacuation: Your plan should have strong medical coverage (preferably over $100,000) and include emergency medical evacuation, including helicopter transport.
- Activity Coverage: Make sure it includes activities such as jungle trekking, mountain climbing, and scuba diving.
- Theft Protection: Coverage for lost or stolen items (cameras, phones) is a good addition.
Malaysian Borneo is not a place where tipping is common, but it is always appreciated if the service is good, especially in the tourism sector. Many hotels and restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill.
- Tour Guides & Drivers: For an multi-day trip, it is generous to tip 20 to 40MYR (approximately 5 to 10 USD) per day for a guide, while for a driver, it will be 10 to 20MYR (approximately 2.50 to 5 USD) per day.
- Restaurants: If a service charge is not included, rounding up to the nearest dollar or leaving a little change will suffice.
- Porters and Boat Crew: A tip of 5-10 MYR per bag or per trip is sufficient.
The internet is quite reliable in urban and rural areas, but it can be very slow or even unavailable in the jungle and on island and river cruises.
- Wi-Fi Internet connectivity is available in most hotels and cafes, but the speed can be unpredictable. Do not use it for streaming.
- Mobile Data: The 4G network is strong when one is in populated areas but fades quickly when traveling to rural and/or forested areas.
- Embracing Disconnect: Connectivity is not a guarantee in the rainforest. Download important stuff in advance.
Yes, quite easily. A local SIM card is inexpensive and provides the best coverage in populated areas.
- For U.S. Citizens: International roaming is available but is quite costly.
- Best Local Solution: You can buy a prepaid SIM card specifically designed for foreigners from operators such as Celcom or Maxis (Hotlink) upon arrival in Malaysia at the airport. Celcom is renowned for having the strongest signal coverage in rural and jungle regions of the states of Sabah and Sarawak.
- Coverage: There is no coverage in dense jungle areas, above Laban Rata on Mount Kinabalu, and in remote islands.
No, you shouldn’t. Tap water is not suitable for drinking for visitors.
- Water Safety: Drink only sealed bottled water, which is very affordable and accessible. Use it even in brushing your teeth.
- On Tours & Treks: Your guide will provide you with safe drinking water (either boiled, filtered, or bottled).
- Environmental Note: A refillable bottle and a water filter or purification tablets would help avoid plastic bottle waste, particularly on treks.
Western-style flush toilets can be found in all hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers in urban areas.
- In the Jungle & Rural Areas: Basic toilet-and-shower stalls or "long drop" pit toilets will be encountered in jungle treks, river lodges, or some rural villages. At remote eco-lodges or homestays, toilets will be basic but clean.
- Essential: Always carry your own toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and a small flashlight or headlamp to take outside of cities.
Borneo is a tropical area, and there are certain health issues to consider there. It is recommended to consult a travel doctor 4-6 weeks before your trip.
- Vaccinations: All routine vaccines (MMR, Tdap) should be current. Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis vaccines are recommended. Yellow Fever vaccination is required only if the country is at risk for Yellow Fever transmission.
- Malaria & Dengue: Malaria exists in some rural areas of Borneo (e.g., in Sarawak). Dengue fever is common in urban & rural areas. Antimalarials have been prescribed by your doctor.
- Prevention is better: Apply insect repellent containing DEET, wear long sleeves & pants during dusk, & rest under mosquito nets if available.
- Food & Water: Eat only properly cooked food and peeled fruits. Avoid ice in beverages sold in street stalls.

Yes, Borneo is a very safe place with little violent crime. The only danger lies in wild animals and nature, as well as petty theft.

- Theft: Caution is warranted. Do not leave valuables unattended in a car or in an unlocked room.
- Road Safety: Traffic in places such as Kota Kinabalu can be quite chaotic. As a pedestrian, you have to be very careful.
