Yes, most visitors do. U.S. citizens need a visa to visit Indonesia. The usual and easiest visa for a tourist visit is called a Visa on Arrival (VOA). You can get it at the airport.
- Visa On Arrival (VOA): Available for Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) for about USD $35. This visa will last for 30 days and can be extended for another 30 days at an immigration office.
- Passport Validity: Passport must be valid for at least six months beyond intended date of entry and have two blank pages.

Yes, absolutely, and it is mandatory for all guests of EurotourClub. Quality healthcare is available in major areas for tourists, but it may be costly in case of serious problems or evacuation.
- Medical & Evacuation Coverage: It is imperative that your insurance plan offers a high level of medical coverage (preferably in excess of $100,000) with a medical evacuation benefit.
- Activity Coverage: Make sure it includes adventure activities which are common in Bali, such as motor biking (if you are going to bike), surfing, diving, and trekking.
- Theft Protection: This coverage is strongly recommended as it protects against lost or stolen personal belongings.
The custom of tipping is not traditional in Balinese society but is much appreciated in the tourism sector, as there are low wage standards. It is an expression of gratitude for quality services.
- Restaurants: A tip of 5-10% is considered very liberal, and this will be even more appreciated if there’s no service charge.
- Tour Guides & Drivers: If it is for a private guide or driver, then 50,000 to 100,000 IDR per day is about right. For groups, 25,000 to 50,000 IDR is sufficient.
- Spa Therapists & Porters: 10,000 - 20,000 IDR per treatment or bag is a generous act.
You shouldn’t. Tap water in the place is not safe for consumption by tourists. It might cause stomach problems.
- Water Safety: Drink bottled water which is sealed and very inexpensive. You can also use this water to brush your teeth.
- Ice and Food: Ice found in fixed restaurants and bars is generally filtered and safe to use. However, ice from street stalls should be handled with more caution.
- Green Tip: Please try to re-use your water bottle or buy large water gallons or re-fill your water bottle at hotels.
Internet connection in tourist areas such as Seminyak, Canggu, and Ubud is generally excellent, but in some of the more remote villages and mountains, it might be slow or even non-existent.
- Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi is available at hotels, villas, cafes, and co-working centers. Internet speed at hotels is adequate for video conferencing.
- Mobile Internet: 4G networks are strong in populated and tourist regions. A local SIM card is the best way for connectivity in all regions.

- For U.S. Travelers: International roaming is possible, although it is very pricey for data use.
- Best Local Solution: Buy a prepaid SIM card for tourists from Telkomsel (has the best coverage) or XL Axiata at the airport or from their stores in town. Your passport is required for registration.
- Availability: Telkomsel has the widest coverage and is more able to reach remote areas than other operators.
You will find Western-style flush toilets in all the hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls.
- Public and Local Restrooms: In local warung eateries, small shops, and public restrooms, the “Mandi” type of toilet is quite common. This is basically a squat toilet accompanied by a water bucket and scoop used as the flush system. It is always best to bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as these are usually not provided.
The Balinese culture has strong spiritual and communal values. Displaying respect for their customs and traditions is of prime importance and valued highly.
- Visits to Temples & Modest Dress: Modest dress is required when visiting a temple (pura). A sarong and sash must be worn, which can be obtained for a small donation or rental charge. Women menstruating are not supposed to visit a temple.
- Offerings (Canang Sari): Be sure not to walk on the lovely palm leaf offerings you will find on the ground everywhere.
- The Head & Feet: The head is considered sacred; one should not touch another person’s head. Feet are considered the lowest and dirtiest part of the human body. Try not to point your feet towards people or towards any sacred object.
- Handling Objects: When dealing with objects, always use your right hand for giving, receiving, eating, or passing money to someone. The left hand is regarded as being unclean.
- Ceremonies at Temple: If you are witnessing a ceremony, you are expected to observe it quietly and with respect at a distance. You are not allowed to use flash photographs or obstruct the procession.
Yes, Bali is a very safe destination, and violent crime is a rarity there. The biggest danger lies in road accidents, petty burglary, and natural factors.
