GEYSERS, GLACIERS, HOT SPRINGS

Midnight Sun and Golden Circle

This 5-day Iceland short break gives you the big natural drama without stretching the trip too thin: Reykjavik, Reykjanes steam fields, the Golden Circle, the Secret Lagoon, South Coast waterfalls and a guided walk on Solheimajokull Glacier. It is compact, active and full of those "how is this real?" Iceland moments.

Why you'll love this trip

  • Midnight Sun Energy
Travel in summer, when long bright evenings make every day feel generously stretched.
  • Reykjanes Steam Fields
Walk between tectonic plates, bubbling mud pools, hot springs and rugged coastal history.
  • Local Art Stop
Meet artists in Hafnarfjordur and hear how community, history and creativity share one space.
  • Secret Lagoon Soak
Slip into warm geothermal water at Iceland's oldest man-made pool after the Golden Circle.
  • Glacier Hike Thrill
Strap on crampons and walk Solheimajokull with a guide, weather permitting.
  • South Coast Waterfalls
Feel the spray at Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss and hidden Kvernufoss in one dramatic day.
This trip is short, but Iceland wastes no time showing off.

Tour program
  • Welcome to Iceland. Your trip begins in Reykjavik, the world's northernmost capital, with a 6 pm welcome meeting. If you arrive early, wander the city streets, browse independent shops, warm up in a cafe or get your first feel for the harbor and colorful rooftops. After the meeting, you may want to head out with the group for dinner and ease into the trip over good food, cold air and that slightly unreal Icelandic light.

  • Start the day with the clean bite of Icelandic air, then head toward the Reykjanes Peninsula. Stop at the Bridge Between Continents, a footbridge over the fissure where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart. Continue to Gunnuhver, a geothermal area of steam vents and mud pools tied to a local ghost story, then visit Hafnarfjordur and a local artist community. On a guided visit, meet the artists, hear about the building and see how this offbeat harbor town keeps creativity close to daily life. After lunch at a local restaurant, continue through Krisuvik and Seltun, then stop at Strandarkirkja, a small Lutheran church long associated with seafaring travelers, before settling near Hveragerdi.

Special information: Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.
  • Today brings Iceland's classic Golden Circle, but with enough time to actually feel the places, not just tick them off. Visit Thingvellir National Park, where Iceland's first parliament gathered in AD 930 and where the Silfra fissure marks the slow separation of two tectonic plates. At the geyser area, watch Strokkur build pressure, swell blue and erupt 15 to 20 m into the air. Continue to Gullfoss, the mighty double waterfall on the Hvita River. Then trade cold mist for warm water with an included soak at the Secret Lagoon, Iceland's oldest man-made pool, fed by natural hot springs.

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours. Pack a swimsuit for the Secret Lagoon. You can bring your own towel or rent one there.
  • Drive toward Solheimajokull Glacier, part of one of Europe's largest ice-cap systems, for a guided glacier walk. With crampons fitted and your guide leading the way, step onto blue-white ice, ridges and frozen textures that make the landscape feel alive beneath your boots. Continue to Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk behind the falling water for a different angle, then visit Skogafoss, one of Iceland's biggest waterfalls. Later, take a short hike to Kvernufoss, tucked into a nearby valley and framed by mossy lava cliffs. Tonight, enjoy dinner at your accommodation. If you are traveling during midnight sun season, a late walk can feel wonderfully strange.

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours. The glacier walk depends on weather conditions, and the order of activities may change for safety. Ankle-high shoes are required so crampons fit properly. No previous glacier experience is needed, and your guide provides safety briefing and equipment, but the hike can be physically demanding on uneven and slippery terrain. Travelers with mobility or health concerns should consider this carefully. If you prefer not to join the glacier hike, you can walk to the glacier tongue instead.
  • Return to Reykjavik today, with Thingvellir National Park included before the city pulls you back in. Once in the capital, your leader will take you on a walking tour focused on Reykjavik's history, culture and local character. The trip ends after the walking tour, with no further activities planned. If you want more time in Iceland, arrange extra accommodation in advance.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
Iceland is remote and expensive, and that affects meals, museum entries and optional outdoor activities. Your leader can help with practical ways to manage costs, but it is worth budgeting realistically before you arrive. Weather is another major part of the Iceland experience. Even in summer, it can be cold, windy and wet, especially at night or at the start and end of the season. Bring warm layers, thermals, gloves, a down jacket or warm outer layer and sturdy footwear.

The glacier hike is weather-dependent and may be adjusted for safety. Your leader will discuss any necessary itinerary changes with the group and offer alternative routes or activities whenever possible.
Visa information
Visa details are provided through Sherpa, a third-party service. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements, not full entry visas. Additional service fees apply if you purchase a visa via Sherpa.
Accommodation
Accommodation includes 4 nights in hotels. The accommodation style listed in the day-by-day itinerary is a guideline, and similar standard properties may be used if preferred places are unavailable. Early check-in cannot always be guaranteed, especially if the group arrives before normal check-in time, but luggage can usually be stored while you explore.
