WATERFALLS, GLACIERS, WILD ROADS

Fire, Ice and Wild Roads

This 8-day Iceland loop is built for travelers who want the country beyond Reykjavik: geysers, black beaches, roaring waterfalls, glacier lagoons, volcanic steam fields, long scenic drives and quiet guesthouse nights. You will circle from the Golden Circle to the South Coast, East Fjords, Lake Myvatn, Akureyri and Snaefellsnes before returning to the capital.

Why you'll love this trip

  • Golden Circle Power
See Thingvellir, Strokkur and Gullfoss before the day-trip crowds fully arrive.
  • South Coast Drama
Stand near Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss and black-sand Reynisfjara in one wild day.
  • Glacier Lagoon Cruise
Float past blue-white icebergs at Jokulsarlon, where silence feels almost unreal.
  • Volcanic Myvatn
Walk among mud pools, lava formations, pseudo craters and steam-bent landscapes.
  • Remote Farm Night
Stay near Modrudalur, Iceland's highest inhabited settlement, surrounded by highland space.
  • Snaefellsnes Coast
Finish with white beaches, basalt shores, cliff walks and glacier-backed peninsula views.
Iceland does not ease you in; it throws weather, water, lava and ice at you, then somehow makes it feel peaceful.

Tour program
  • Welcome to Iceland. Your trip begins in Reykjavik, a small capital with a big creative streak, set between volcanic peaks, cold ocean air and long seasonal shifts in daylight. Depending on the time of year, the city can feel like it is barely waking up or refusing to sleep at all. Your welcome meeting is at 6 pm tonight. If you arrive early, consider the National Museum for a look at Iceland's Viking settlement story, or join locals at Laugardalslaug Geothermal Pool for a very Icelandic first soak.

Special information: Please attend the welcome meeting, as insurance details and emergency contact information are collected at this time. If you are delayed, let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or check the lobby for details on where the meeting will take place.
  • Start early and head out on the Golden Circle before the busiest crowds arrive. Visit Thingvellir National Park, where Iceland's early parliament met and where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are visibly pulling apart. Continue to the Geysir geothermal area and watch Strokkur swell, bubble and shoot hot water high into the air. Then stand near Gullfoss, the powerful double waterfall on the Hvita River, before continuing to a remote farm stay in the Hvolsvollur region for the night.

  • The South Coast turns the volume up fast. Visit Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, two of Iceland's signature waterfalls, and if you climb the stairs near Skogafoss, expect wind, spray and a strong reminder that nature is not trying to be polite. Continue to Reynisfjara, where black sand and sharp basalt formations make the coastline feel almost lunar. Later, reach Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, then walk down to Diamond Beach, where broken icebergs wash onto black sand and catch whatever light the sky gives them.

  • Return to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon this morning for an included boat tour among jagged blue-white icebergs. Afterward, drive along the rugged East Fjords, where the road runs between steep mountains, deep water, waterfalls, glaciers and small fishing towns. You will stop in places such as Djupivogur and Egilsstadir, then continue through mountain roads to Modrudalur. At 469 m above sea level, this is Iceland's highest inhabited settlement, and the open highland feeling is part of the appeal. Stretch your legs with a walk to the farm church before settling in for the night.

East Fjords - Scenic Drive with Stops at Djupivogur & Egilsstadir; Jokulsarlon - Glacier Lagoon Boat Tour

On affected departures, a thermal bath experience at Vok Bath is included in the afternoon instead. You will still have time to see the Glacier Lagoon, walk on Diamond Beach or hike on the glacier.
  • Head to Dettifoss, one of Europe's most powerful waterfalls, where the water drops into Jokulsargljufur canyon with a force you can feel through the ground. Continue through the volcanic landscapes around Lake Myvatn, stopping at Namaskard, where steam rises from sulfur-colored earth. Walk among lava stacks and caves at Dimmuborgir, then see the pseudo craters at Skutustadir. Before reaching Akureyri, stop at Godafoss, the crescent-shaped waterfall tied to the story of Iceland's conversion to Christianity.

  • Akureyri sits at the head of Iceland's longest fjord and feels like the country's northern capital. Begin with a short walking tour, taking in the town's church and local landmarks, then continue toward the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. This region is watched over by Snaefellsjokull Glacier, the same glacier Jules Verne used as the doorway in Journey to the Centre of the Earth. If timing allows, you may visit the seasonal Lysuholslaug thermal pool or see Icelandic horses nearby. Tonight, share a home-cooked dinner with your group and hosts.

  • Spend more time on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, starting with the white beach at Budir, then continue to Arnarstapi for a short walk along sea cliffs where birds, wind and basalt do most of the talking. Visit Djupalonssandur, a black pebble beach with a moody, shipwrecked feel, then return to Reykjavik to complete the loop. If you are traveling between May and December, you may want to book an optional whale watching tour for later today. Tonight, gather for one last dinner or raise a glass of Brennivin to a country that does not do subtle.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
This trip covers a lot of Iceland in a short time, so a few long drives are part of the experience. Those road hours are also when some of the best scenery appears, and they give the group time to get to know each other between waterfalls, fjords and volcanic stops. Some guesthouses have shared facilities, so be comfortable with simple, practical accommodation outside the capital.

Iceland's weather can shift quickly, even in summer. Bring layers, waterproof outerwear and shoes that can handle spray, mud, gravel and wind. Optional experiences such as the Blue Lagoon, glacier hikes and whale watching can book out, so reserve ahead when something matters to you.
Visa information
Visa details are provided through Sherpa, a third-party service. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements, not full entry visas. Additional service fees apply if you purchase a visa via Sherpa.
Accommodation
Accommodation includes 4 nights in hotels and 3 nights in guesthouses or farm stays with shared facilities. The accommodation style listed in the day-by-day itinerary is a guideline, and similar standard properties may be used if preferred places are unavailable.

Rooms are arranged on a twin-share basis. Solo travelers are paired with another traveler of the same gender where possible, though there may be times when facilities are shared rather than ensuite, and on rare occasions you may share with travelers from a different trip. Early check-in cannot always be guaranteed, but luggage can usually be stored while the group explores. Extra pre- or post-trip accommodation may require a room change. Icelandic and European hotels do not always provide air-conditioning, kettles or fridges.
Joining point
Fosshotel Raudara, Raudararstigur 37, Reykjavik 105, Iceland. Phone: +354 5147000.

Fosshotel Raudara sits in Reykjavik's Hlidar neighborhood, a quieter residential area within walking distance of the city's main sights, art spaces and dining areas. The location also works well for airport pickups and tour meeting points.

If you have a confirmed private arrival transfer, make your way to the arrivals hall at Keflavik Airport after landing. Your driver will wait on the left side after customs, holding a board with your name. If your flight is cancelled, changed, delayed, or you cannot find the driver, contact the transfer operator at +354 7903838 or +354 7923838. You may also call the emergency line at +49 8024 4679 540.

Gray Line and Flybus operate shuttles between Keflavik Airport and the BSI Bus Terminal in Reykjavik. From there, change to a hotel shuttle bus or walk to the joining point hotel. You can book airport shuttles online or after arrival. Taxis are also available from the airport.

Important notes

1. A single supplement may be available if you prefer your own room. It applies to all nights of the trip and depends on availability. Because many Iceland properties are small, only a limited number of single supplements may be offered on each departure.

2. Iceland is expensive, especially for eating out, museum entries and outdoor activities. Your leader can suggest ways to manage costs. In remote areas, dinner may only be available at the guesthouse where the group is staying. If you prefer not to eat at the guesthouse restaurant, stock up at a supermarket before arrival.

3. Read the trip notes carefully so you know exactly what is and is not included in the trip price.
