CASTLES, CAFES, RIVER MILES

Danube by Bike

This 8-day cycling trip follows the Danube from elegant Vienna to lively Budapest, with Slovakia and small-town Hungary stitched into the ride. Expect riverside bike paths, lowland forests, Baroque streets, castle views, a cafe with a social mission, a support vehicle when you need it and a well-earned soak in Budapest at the end.

Why you'll love this trip

  • Vienna On Two Wheels
Start with a guided city ride past grand avenues, palaces and cafe life.
  • Danube River Paths
Follow mostly flat riverside routes through forests, villages and quiet border country.
  • Bratislava Border Energy
Roll into Slovakia's capital and feel Central Europe's cultures meet firsthand.
  • Esztergom Basilica
Visit Hungary's largest church, rising above the Danube Bend with old-world drama.
  • Budapest Bath Finish
Reward tired legs with steaming thermal pools before a night by the river.
  • Support Vehicle Comfort
Ride with backup nearby, giving you freedom to pedal or take a breather.
The Danube feels different from a bike: slower, closer and full of small moments you would miss from a bus.

Tour program
  • Welcome to Austria. Your cycling adventure begins in Vienna with a 6 pm welcome meeting. If you arrive early, spend the day on foot and let the city open up at your own pace: wide boulevards, coffeehouses, museums and grand Habsburg-era corners are everywhere. After the meeting, you may want to join the group for an optional dinner at a Viennese Heurigen, a wine tavern tradition built around the newest local wine and simple, hearty food. It is a fitting first night before several days in the saddle.
  • Accommodation
    Hotel - 1 night
  • Meals
There are no meals included on this day.
  • Special information
    Included activities: del.

    Optional activities: del.

Special information: Please attend the welcome meeting, as insurance details and emergency contact information are collected at this time. If you are delayed, let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or check the lobby for details on where the meeting will take place. Many shops, including bicycle shops, close at midday on Saturday and all day Sunday, so buying a bike helmet in Vienna before cycling begins can be difficult. Bring your own helmet from home.
  • After breakfast, meet the group for a bike fitting and a short test ride so everything feels right before the real cycling begins. Then set out with your leader on a guided ride through Vienna, following the city's imperial footprint past landmarks such as St. Stephen's Cathedral, Hofburg Palace and the Ringstrasse. You will also stop at Vollpension, a cafe and social enterprise where older Viennese locals bake cakes and cookies while staying connected to the community. The evening is free, so ask your leader where to eat after your first day on the bike.

Special information: Your cycling time today will be approximately 3 hours or 10 km (6 mi) on mostly flat roads, with about 180 m (590 ft) of elevation gain.
  • Leave central Vienna and ride along the Danube toward Hasslau an der Donau, then continue east along riverside bike paths toward Slovakia. The scenery shifts between Roman traces, modern reconstructions, quiet riverbanks and borderland views. By afternoon, arrive in Bratislava, a compact capital with a layered identity shaped by its location between countries and cultures. Join your leader for an orientation walk, then keep the evening simple: dinner, rest and recovery.

  • Follow the Danube as it bends south, riding through villages, lowland forest and open farmland into Hungary. Today's destination is Gyor, a bright Baroque city with roots stretching through many cultures and eras. Kaptalan Hill, Becsi Kapu Square and Kiraly Street show a more urban side of the journey after a day spent with the river. The contrast works beautifully: quiet cycling by day, graceful city streets by evening.

Komarno is known for its forts, strategic river position and historic character, but it is also a pleasant place to slow down after several days of riding. If your legs are asking for mercy, consider an optional spa visit. Otherwise, wander the streets, look for local food and enjoy the rare feeling of crossing countries by bicycle.

The city is home to the seat of the Hungarian Catholic Church, along with the Royal Palace, Watertown and streets set close to the river. After arrival, take a leader-led walk and visit Esztergom Basilica, Hungary's largest church. Reflected in the Danube Bend, the basilica has the kind of scale that makes you stop talking for a minute.

This is the longest day of cycling on the trip, but you will break it up with a scenic picnic lunch by the river. After rolling into Budapest itself, end the ride with a visit to the Szechenyi Baths, one of the city's classic thermal bath experiences. Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
You need to be confident and competent riding a bicycle to enjoy this trip. The daily distances are long, reaching up to about 82 km, but the Danube route is naturally flat or gently rolling for much of the way, and a support vehicle is available when you need a break for an hour or a full day.

One leader rides with the group, while another drives the support vehicle and acts as a back marker when possible. On cyclist-only paths, your leader may ask someone from the group to help as the back marker. Rooms are arranged on a twin-share basis, and this trip may include travelers who joined from a longer itinerary.
Visa information
Visa details are provided through Sherpa, a third-party service. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements, not full entry visas. Additional service fees apply if you purchase a visa via Sherpa.
Accommodation
Accommodation includes 6 nights in hotels and 1 night in a guesthouse. The accommodation listed in the day-by-day program is a guideline, and similar standard properties may be used when preferred hotels are unavailable. Early check-in cannot always be guaranteed, especially when the group arrives before normal check-in time, but luggage can usually be stored while you explore.

Important notes

1. Provide your height when booking so the correct bicycle size can be arranged. If your height is not supplied before arrival, a suitable bike size cannot be guaranteed.

2. A single supplement may be available if you prefer your own room. Ask your booking agent for details.

3. Bike helmets are compulsory. Helmets cannot be hired locally, so you must bring your own from home.

4. One leader rides with the group and another drives the support vehicle. Where the vehicle cannot follow the riders directly, such as on cyclist-only paths, your leader may assign someone in the group as back marker.

5. An e-bike option may be available for an extra cost, but numbers are limited and requests are not guaranteed until confirmed. Ask your agent at the time of booking.
