CAMPFIRES, PEAKS, WILD BLUE WATER

Rockies Trails and Glacier Lakes

This 8-day Canada hiking trip keeps the Rockies close: Banff trails, Jasper backroads, Yoho waterfalls, Lake Louise views and nights in campgrounds with mountain air all around. It is active, outdoorsy and refreshingly simple, built for travelers who want their vacation measured in trail miles, cold lake color and that good kind of tired at dinner.

Why You'll Love This Trip

Tour program
  • Meet your group in Calgary at 7:30 am, hand over the practical details and head west toward the mountains. Banff National Park gets things moving fast with a first walk on Tunnel Mountain, a short but satisfying trail that gives you an early taste of the Rockies. Since the hike is not too long, the afternoon leaves room for Banff itself, maybe a casual local meal, a brewery stop or a first wander through town with peaks sitting right above the streets.
  • Accommodation
Campground with facilities - 1 night
  • Meals
    Lunch, Dinner
  • Included activities
    Tunnel Mountain Hike
  • Special information
Driving time is about 1.5 hours. Hiking distance is about 4.3 km / 2.7 mi with about 262 m / 859 ft of elevation gain. The welcome meeting is important because insurance details and emergency contact information are collected then. If your flight may arrive too late, consider coming into Calgary one day early.
  • Today turns toward Lake Louise, the kind of place that makes people lower their voices without meaning to. Your leader will help choose a suitable hiking option based on conditions and group ability, with trails in the area ranging from easier walks to stronger climbs. The Lake Agnes route may be possible when the seasonal teahouse is open, and afterward there is time to take in Lake Louise from the shore. Later, soak at Banff Upper Hot Springs, then meet back up for dinner.
  • Accommodation
Campground with facilities - 1 night
  • Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Included activities
Lake Louise & Moraine Lake hike; Banff Upper Hotsprings
  • Special information
Lake Agnes Tea House is seasonal and usually closed from Thanksgiving until early June. For bear safety, hiking in this area is not allowed with fewer than four people. Bring a swimsuit for the hot springs.
  • Leave early for the Icefields Parkway, where the drive feels less like a transfer and more like a moving viewpoint. At Bow Lake, set out on a hike that follows the lake, passes rushing water and opens toward the Bow Glacier Falls area. Crowfoot Mountain, Bow Crow Peak and Mt Gordon frame the day, so the scenery keeps changing without trying too hard. Tonight, return to a remote campground for a BBQ dinner surrounded by Rockies peaks.

  • Special information
Hiking distance is about 9 km / 5.5 mi with about 240 m / 787 ft of elevation gain.
  • This morning, head for Mt Robson Provincial Park and the Kinney Lake Trail. The walk follows the pale Kinney River through forest toward a mountain-ringed lake, with Mt Robson rising as the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Pause for a picnic with the group, take in the scale of the place and then return along the same trail. Afterward, drive back toward Jasper and let camp feel especially good after a proper trail day.

  • Travel to Maligne Lake, a bright-blue Jasper classic with forests, mountains and a real chance of spotting wildlife on the road in. Moose, deer, black bears and grizzlies are all part of the wider landscape here, though sightings are never guaranteed. You can keep things relaxed with gentle walks around the lake area, or rent a canoe or kayak if you want to see the water from a different angle. The afternoon slows down in Jasper town.

  • Return to the Icefields Parkway for another day of glaciers, waterfalls and high-country views. The plan includes stops along the route, the Wilcox Pass walk, Peyto Lake viewpoint and time around the Athabasca Glacier area. If you choose the optional guided Athabasca Glacier hike, you will skip Wilcox Pass so the day stays manageable. Either way, this is a big Rockies day, with the Columbia Icefield scenery doing a lot of the talking.

  • Cross into Yoho National Park for a half-day hike through one of the Rockies' most beautiful corners. The trail links glacial lakes, mountain views and valley scenery, with Takakkaw Falls bringing the full theater: cold mist, falling water and a name rooted in the Cree word often translated as "wonderful." Emerald Lake and Yoho Lake may also feature as the group follows the loop and any suitable detours before returning to the trailhead.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
This is a real hiking trip, not a sightseeing tour with a few short strolls added in. Daily walks range from about 3.2 km / 2 mi to 13.5 km / 8.5 mi, and several hikes include meaningful elevation gain, so solid fitness and proper hiking shoes matter.

This is also a camping trip. Travelers help with practical camp life, including putting up tents, cooking support and washing up, which is part of the rhythm of the experience rather than an extra chore.

Mountain seasons in the Rockies can shift quickly. Snow, trail closures, late openings, early closures, wildlife rules and weather can affect hikes or optional activities, especially in May, early June, September and October. The upside of shoulder season is often fewer people and a calmer feel, and your leader will adjust plans when needed.

Mosquitoes can be active in summer, especially in wet periods and lower areas with standing water. Bring repellent, consider long light-colored layers for dawn and dusk, and pack with outdoor conditions in mind.

The tour begins early on Day 1 at 7:30 am and returns to Calgary around 4 pm on Day 8. Extra nights in Calgary before or after the trip can make travel logistics much easier.

Accommodation
Accommodation is campground-based for all seven nights. Campsites are chosen for scenery, location and available facilities, and the supplied camping gear includes shared, roomy, easy-to-pitch tents with thin foam sleeping mats and vinyl floors.

Sleeping bags and pillows are not provided, so you will need to bring your own. Campsites usually have toilets and, in most cases, hot showers, though showers may cost a small local fee and occasionally may only have cold water. Some campgrounds may also have paid laundry facilities.

Quiet hours are taken seriously at campgrounds, often from around 10 pm to 7 am. If weather becomes extreme, such as heavy rain or snow, the group may have the option to move to another nearby accommodation if everyone agrees, but any upgrade cost is paid locally by travelers.
Joining point
HI Calgary City Centre, 520 7th Avenue Southeast, Calgary, Canada

The joining point is in downtown Calgary, close to the CTrain and within easy reach of restaurants, nightlife, shopping and city attractions. Free Wi-Fi is available at the hostel.

From Calgary airport, a taxi usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes and costs roughly CAD35 to CAD50. Uber and Lyft are also available, often around CAD34 to CAD45 depending on traffic and demand. For a cheaper option, Calgary Transit Route 300 Airport Bus runs downtown in about 50 minutes; a single ticket is about CAD3.80 and a day pass is about CAD11.95, with tickets available from vending machines near the arrivals-level bus bays.

Important notes

The trip starts with a 7:30 am welcome meeting in Calgary on Day 1, so arriving the night before is strongly recommended if your flight timing is tight.

The group is expected to return to Calgary around 4 pm on Day 8, finishing at the same location as the joining point.

No hotel night is included at the end of the trip, though additional Calgary nights can be requested if needed.

A sleeping bag is required.

A single supplement may be requested if you prefer not to share a tent. It applies to all nights and depends on availability, and because group campsite space is limited, it is always on request.

Weather, trail conditions, wildlife rules, lingering snowpack or temporary access restrictions can change the planned hiking routes. Your leader may adjust the itinerary or substitute trails to keep the trip safe and worthwhile.

Airport shuttle service is not arranged for North America trips. Use taxi, rideshare or public transit based on the joining and finishing point details.
