  • Welcome to Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital of tango, late dinners, grand avenues and neighborhood character. Your trip begins with a 3 pm welcome meeting. Afterward, join your leader for an orientation walk around some of the city's main sights. Tonight, you may head out with the group for dinner and a first taste of Argentine flavors before the wild southern days begin.

Optional: Teatro Colon - USD25; Buenos Aires - Tango show including tango class and dinner - USD95; Buenos Aires - Gran Cafe Tortoni Show - USD50

Please attend the welcome meeting, as insurance and emergency contact details are collected then. If you will be late, let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or check the lobby for meeting details. If arriving early, you may want extra time in Buenos Aires. Because ATM access can be limited in parts of Patagonia and you leave Buenos Aires early on Day 2, bring USD cash to exchange locally for meals and personal expenses.
  • Fly south from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, then continue by private transfer to El Chalten. This small frontier town sits near Los Glaciares National Park and draws hikers, climbers and mountain people from around the world. The day is free after arrival, giving you time to settle in, check your gear and get ready for the first serious hiking days.

  • Today brings one of the signature hikes of the trip: the round trip to Laguna de los Tres at the base of Mount Fitz Roy. The trail is popular and well marked, with steady mountain scenery, clear paths and a few steep sections near the end. Wind and rain can be the real challenge here, but when the lagoon and granite peaks open up in front of you, the effort makes sense fast.

  • Settle in for a long travel day into Chile. Travel by local bus to Cerro Castillo, stop for lunch while waiting for the onward transfer, then continue to Torres del Paine National Park. This is Chilean Patagonia at its most famous: lakes, waterfalls, glaciers, guanacos, condors, flamingos and jagged mountains. On arrival, settle into the campsite that will be home for the next three nights.

Treks are moderate to difficult and follow marked trails. Belongings remain at the campsite while hiking.
  • Take on the Base Las Torres hike, one of Torres del Paine's best-known routes. The trail moves through rocky valleys, grassland, streams and forest, with a climb toward Windy Pass and changing views of snowy mountains. After passing Chileno Refugio, continue toward the famous viewpoint: a milky-green lagoon beneath the three granite towers. After time for photos and a proper look, return to camp.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
This is a hiking trip, and fitness matters. Daily walking distances can range from about 5 km to 24 km, with some long, exposed and demanding days. The stronger and better prepared you are, the more you will enjoy the trails.

Patagonia is remote, popular and weather-driven. Travel and accommodation can cost more than in easier-to-reach regions, and conditions can change quickly. Pack carefully for rain, wind and extreme cold, even if the forecast looks friendly.

The three-night camping stay in Torres del Paine is a major highlight, but facilities are more basic than the hotel nights. Expect shared tents, shared bathroom facilities and a more rugged routine.

The trip includes two especially long travel days, Days 7 and 11. Read the itinerary closely so the road time does not surprise you.

Visa information tools can be useful, but travelers are responsible for confirming full entry and transit requirements for their own passport.

Accommodation
Accommodation is a mix of hotels and camping. Hotels are selected to suit the route and local style, but standards and service in Argentina and Chile may differ from what travelers expect at home.

In El Chalten, accommodation is in a small inn that reflects the town's remote location. In Torres del Paine, you camp for three nights in two-person tents with sleeping mats provided. You must bring your own sleeping bag, or hire one locally, and bring a camping pillow if needed. Campsite bathrooms and shower blocks are shared and separated by sex.

Important notes

Full passport details are required at booking so entrance fees, flights and overland transfers can be arranged.

The trip starts with a welcome meeting at 3 pm on Day 1.

A single supplement may be available, subject to availability. It excludes Days 7, 8 and 9, when camping is shared.

Carry US Dollars to Argentina and exchange locally. ATMs are widely available in cities but limited in rural Patagonia, and withdrawal limits can be low.

This trip includes domestic flights. Argentina is strict about excess baggage and usually enforces a checked luggage limit of 15 kg.

The maximum elevation reached on this trip, including city location and hiking gain, does not exceed 1500 m. Although some hikes are strenuous, the trip does not take place at altitude.
