  • Hola, and welcome to Belize. Your trip begins in Belize City, the former capital where the Belize River meets the Caribbean Sea. Meet your leader and group at a 6 pm welcome meeting, then you may choose to head out together for dinner and a first taste of local food. If you arrive early, Belize City has a few worthwhile stops: a coastal and maritime museum inside a restored fire station, contemporary Belizean art at the Image Factory or St John Cathedral, the oldest Anglican church in Central America.

    Please attend the welcome meeting, as insurance details and next of kin information are collected then. If you expect to be late, tell your travel agent or hotel reception. Ask at reception or check the lobby notice for the meeting location. Belize City is a useful starting point, but street crime can be an issue. Stick to main streets, leave valuables at the hotel and use taxis to get around.
  • Travel by private vehicle to Carmelita this morning, then board a boat for the ride along the New River to Lamanai Archaeological Site. The journey is part of the fun, with your local guide helping you look for colorful birds along the riverbanks. At Lamanai, explore temples, plazas and old homes that reveal a once-thriving Maya city. Later, return by boat and continue to Orange Walk, where you will spend the night. Settle into the lodge and share an included group dinner.

The afternoon in San Ignacio is free, so you can rest, wander through town or start looking at tomorrow's optional adventures.

  • Cross into Guatemala for a day trip to Tikal National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the great Maya archaeological places in Central America. Thick rainforest surrounds the temples, and wildlife often moves through the trees, including coatis, howler monkeys, parrots and sometimes big cats. Walk with a local guide among the limestone pyramids and learn about the city's rise, power and eventual decline. After an included group lunch, return to San Ignacio. The evening is free.

  • Today is wide open for San Ignacio's caves, rivers and ruins. You might take the hand-cranked ferry to Xunantunich, a Maya ceremonial center with carved stonework and wide countryside views. For something more active, consider Actun Tunichil Muknal, where you hike and wade into a cave system that has preserved Maya artifacts and crystallized skeletons for more than 1400 years. Other options include Mountain Pine Ridge, waterfalls, swimming holes, Barton Creek by canoe, Caracol ruins or cave tubing.

Tropical Central America can be hot and humid, especially when you are walking around ruins, towns and islands. Carry plenty of water, protect yourself from the sun and give yourself permission to slow down when the heat asks for it.

This trip uses simple accommodation, local-style travel and a relaxed island finish. It suits travelers who enjoy cultural stops and free time, and who do not need every hour tightly scheduled.

Belize City is mainly a starting point, and normal big-city precautions matter there. Use taxis when needed, avoid wandering with valuables and stick to main streets outside the hotel.

Accommodation
Accommodation includes 6 hotel nights and 1 lodge night. The accommodation listed in the itinerary is a guide and may change if preferred properties are unavailable. If a change is needed, similar standard accommodation will be arranged where possible.

Hotels are asked to prepare rooms before the group arrives, especially when arrival is earlier than normal check-in, but immediate check-in is not always possible. In that case, luggage can usually be stored while the group explores or waits for rooms.

The hotel is a modern, colorful property about a 9-minute walk from the ocean and approximately 25 minutes by taxi from Belize City Airport, depending on traffic. It has casual rooms, courtyard views, Wi-Fi, an outdoor pool, bars, restaurant and fitness center.

Arrival transfers may be arranged in advance for an additional fee. If you have pre-booked a transfer, provide flight details at least 14 days before travel. A representative will meet you outside the terminal with a sign showing your name. If you do not have a transfer, use authorized airport taxis arranged inside the terminal. The taxi to the hotel usually costs around BZ$50, or about USD25.

Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm on Day 1 in Belize City.

On the final day, you can choose where to go next. You may stay longer on Caye Caulker, use the included water taxi back to Belize City, add nights in Belize City or ask your leader for help arranging a taxi from the port to the airport.

An open-dated round-trip ticket from Caye Caulker back to Belize City is included. If you are traveling from Caye Caulker to Belize Airport, do not book a flight before 12 pm so you have enough travel time.

Additional accommodation in Caye Caulker or Belize City can be booked if you want to extend the trip.

Transfers from Belize City Port to the Belize City hotel or airport are available through your booking agent.

A single supplement may be available if you prefer not to share a room. It applies to all nights and is subject to availability.
