Today is wide open for San Ignacio's caves, rivers and ruins. You might take the hand-cranked ferry to Xunantunich, a Maya ceremonial center with carved stonework and wide countryside views. For something more active, consider Actun Tunichil Muknal, where you hike and wade into a cave system that has preserved Maya artifacts and crystallized skeletons for more than 1400 years. Other options include Mountain Pine Ridge, waterfalls, swimming holes, Barton Creek by canoe, Caracol ruins or cave tubing.
