Begin the day with a scenic hike through the valley, passing rice paddies, forests and a small Tibetan village on your way to the Cheri Dorji Dhen Monastery. Built in 1620 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, Bhutan's first ruler, this peaceful monastery offers both history and beautiful surroundings.
After returning to Thimphu, stop at the impressive Buddha Dordenma to take in panoramic views over the valley before continuing to Simply Bhutan, an interactive living museum showcasing traditional Bhutanese homes, customs and daily life. Here, you may even like to try your hand at archery, Bhutan's beloved national sport.
Continue to the National Memorial Chorten, one of Thimphu's most important religious landmarks, where locals gather daily to pray and walk clockwise around the stupa in quiet devotion.
Later, visit a local institute dedicated to preserving Bhutan's 13 traditional arts and crafts, where students train in skills such as carpentry, masonry, papermaking and embroidery. Finish the day at the National Textile Museum to learn more about Bhutan's rich artistic heritage and perhaps browse the National Handicrafts Emporium for locally made treasures, including handcrafted paper and traditional textiles.
