GIRAFFES, RHINOS, MAASAI, MARA NIGHTS

Family Safari Under Wide Skies

This 8-day Kenya family safari gives kids and grown-ups the real thing: giraffes close enough to make everyone grin, rhinos around Lake Nakuru, a guided walk near Crater Lake, Maasai stories in Loita Hills and classic 4WD game drives across the Maasai Mara. You travel overland from Nairobi and sleep in a mix of hotel, cottages and camps, with enough pool time and campfire downtime to keep the whole family human.

It is simple, active and wonderfully memorable, built for families who want wildlife, culture and shared adventure without pretending that safari travel is always smooth or spotless.

Why You'll Love This Trip

A Kenya safari built for curious kids, patient parents and big shared stories.
  • Giraffes Near Nairobi
Meet towering giraffes up close and learn why local conservation work matters.
  • Rhino Country
Search Lake Nakuru for white rhinos, zebras and birds on a family game drive.
  • Crater Lake Walk
Walk among giraffes, buffalo, monkeys and birdlife near one of Naivasha's quiet lakes.
  • Maasai Campfire Stories
Meet Maasai hosts in Loita Hills and hear traditions shared around the fire.
  • Mara Family Game Drives
Look for lions, elephants, cheetahs and zebras across the wide Maasai Mara plains.
  • Kid-Friendly Camp Rhythm
Balance wildlife days with camps, pools, shared dinners and room for kids to unwind.
This is Kenya with the family in the frame: dusty roads, big animals, simple camps and stories everyone will retell later. It is not luxury, but it has the kind of wonder kids recognize instantly.
Itinerary
Tour program
  • Welcome to Kenya. Your family safari begins in Nairobi with a 5 pm welcome meeting, where you meet your leader and the other families. If you arrive early, you may want to visit the National Museum of Kenya, the Karen Blixen Museum or Bomas of Kenya, where traditional homesteads from several Kenyan communities are displayed in an outdoor village. Families eager for wildlife can also consider the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage or the Giraffe Centre. After the meeting, maybe head out for dinner together.
  • Accommodation
Heron Court Hotel - 1 night
  • Meals
    None listed
  • Optional activities
Nairobi - City Experience Urban Adventure - USD45
  • Special information
Please attend the welcome meeting, as your leader will collect insurance details and emergency contact information for every family member. If you will be late, contact your travel agent or hotel reception. Ask reception or check the lobby notice for the meeting location.
  • After breakfast, visit Langata Giraffe Sanctuary with your family. Seeing giraffes at eye level is a pretty great way to start a safari, and the visit also introduces the sanctuary's conservation work. Then continue toward Lake Nakuru, a game reserve known for endangered black rhinos and strong wildlife viewing. When you arrive, set up camp and ease into the first safari evening with dinner as the sun goes down.

Afterward, visit a nearby village and meet local residents before continuing to Lake Naivasha. When you arrive, the rest of the day is free. You can hire bikes, relax at camp or let the kids play while everyone gets a little downtime.

Later, you can take an optional boat ride across Lake Naivasha or relax at camp. The nearby pool is often a highlight for kids.

The drive crosses the Great Rift Valley into Maasai country, where red clothing, beadwork and cattle traditions remain part of daily life. Meet Maasai warriors, hear from a local elder about Maasai history and culture, then visit a traditional Maasai home and see where cattle are kept. Tonight is a more basic bush camp experience, but the cultural connection is the reason for coming.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
This is a family trip, so adults and children travel together, and at least one child under 18 must be part of your booking. The minimum child age is 5 years old, and travelers aged 17 and under receive 20% off the full adult price.

Families should be ready for long driving days and bumpy roads. Some drives can reach 6 to 7 hours, which can feel long for younger kids, so snacks, games, patience and flexible expectations matter.

This is a participatory camping trip. Everyone gets into the team spirit by helping with camp setup, food preparation and cleaning. Families help put up and take down their tents as the trip moves from place to place.

Loita Hills uses a secure bush camp with basic facilities and cold showers. Hot bucket showers are available in the morning, but Wi-Fi is not available and upgrades are minimal. The cultural experience is the reward for the simpler comfort level.

The purpose-built overland vehicle has large sliding windows for game viewing. It does not have air conditioning, so it can be hot and dusty at times.
