HANOI TO SAIGON, FULL SPEED

Rails, Lanterns and Delta Days

This 10-day Vietnam route is made for travelers who want the country to feel alive from the first evening. You start with Hanoi street life and a KOTO dinner, sleep on Halong Bay, ride the overnight train south, explore Hue by motorbike, wander Hoi An's lantern streets and finish with Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta.

It is fast, flavorful and wonderfully full, with enough guided structure to keep the trip smooth and enough local texture to make every stop feel distinct.

Why You'll Love This Trip

Travelers arriving early may also consider the Ninh Binh Mini Adventure or Hiking in Sapa add-ons.
  • Travel by private minibus to Ha Long Bay, where limestone islands, sandy coves and grottoes rise from the water. Board a private wooden junk-style boat and cruise through the UNESCO-listed bay, stopping for caves and beaches along the way. If you want more time on the water, join the optional kayaking tour. Tonight, sleep aboard the boat and watch the bay go quiet after dark.

Cave paths can be uneven and slippery, and kayaking or swimming is only allowed in designated zones. Local limits on overnight boats sometimes mean groups use a larger boat, share with another group or split across vessels, with a group leader present. The route may vary, but inclusions remain the same.
  • Wake up on Halong Bay and, if the weather is kind, catch the morning light over the water before returning to Hanoi by bus. Later, board the overnight train south. This is one of those classic Vietnam travel experiences: simple, social and a little rough around the edges in the best possible way.
  • Accommodation
Overnight sleeper train - 1 night

  • Special information
Today's road travel is approximately 3 hours, followed by approximately 12 hours on the overnight train. Sleeper trains usually have four- or six-berth compartments with bench seats that convert into bunks. A sheet, pillow and blanket are provided, though some travelers bring their own sleep sheet. Depending on group size and train layout, you may share with travelers of different genders or passengers outside the group.
  • Arrive in Hue this morning and transfer to your hotel. Once Vietnam's imperial capital, Hue still carries the mood of royal history, old gardens and war-scarred walls. Visit a local village recycling hub working on environmental challenges through creative reuse, then try Hue's local specialty, salt coffee. In the afternoon, step into the Imperial Citadel, a huge city-within-a-city with temples, state buildings and the remains of the emperor's palace.

You will also see the car linked to Thich Quang Duc, the monk who self-immolated in 1963 while protesting the treatment of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese regime. Lunch is a vegetarian feast in a nunnery, and the day ends at Emperor Tu Duc's lakeside royal tomb.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
This trip covers a lot of Vietnam in a short time, so expect several travel days and a few early starts. The overnight train is part of the experience, but the facilities are shared and basic rather than hotel-style.

The Hue motorbike tour is safety assessed and helmets are provided. If you would rather not ride pillion, tell your leader and car transport can be arranged instead.

Vietnam can feel hotter and more humid than many US travelers expect. Think carefully about the season you choose and pack light, breathable clothing.

This itinerary also runs in reverse from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi under a different trip code. If your travel plans work better south-to-north, ask EurotourClub about that option.

This is a strong choice if you want a lot of Vietnam without a long vacation window. If you prefer slower travel with more downtime, a longer Vietnam itinerary may be a better fit.

Accommodation
Accommodation includes 7 nights in hotels, 1 night on an overnight boat and 1 night on an overnight sleeper train. Hotels are generally simple, often in the 2- to 3-star range, with twin-share rooms and private facilities unless the daily itinerary says otherwise.

Some hotels in Southeast Asia may have windowless rooms or windows without much of a view. This can be common in dense city areas and is not always avoidable, though requests for rooms with windows are made where possible.

Day-use rooms may be provided before or after overnight train journeys for shared group use. These are not private rooms, and single supplements do not apply to day rooms. Your leader may be able to help arrange a private day room, depending on availability and extra cost.

The joining hotel is Hong Ngoc Cochinchine Hotel, 97 Nguyen Truong To Street, Hanoi, Vietnam. Phone: +84 437164143.

EurotourClub can help arrange a pre-booked arrival transfer from Hanoi Airport. Please provide your flight details at least 14 days before departure.

For a confirmed transfer, meet the representative after exiting the Terminal Hall at Pillar 11. If you cannot find the representative or your flight is delayed, call the local hotline: +84 903 117 770. The driver or representative should not ask you for additional payment.

Metered taxi ranks are available outside the airport entrance. After customs, exit through gates A4 and A5 on level 1 and look for Noi Bai Airport Taxi drivers in yellow uniform shirts. The fixed fare into town is usually around VND350,000 total. Avoid taxi touts who say they have a metered taxi waiting outside.

For selected late-2026 departures, the joining point changes to Hoa Binh Hotel, 27 Ly Thuong Kiet Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, Vietnam. Phone: 024 3825 3315. Please provide flight details no later than 14 days before departure to arrange the transfer.
