  • Welcome to Madagascar! Your adventure begins in the vibrant capital of Antananarivo, where you'll meet your group and tour leader at a welcome meeting at 5 pm. If you arrive early, take the opportunity to explore the city's unique character, from the historic streets of Haute-Ville to the bustling stalls of the Analakely Market. This evening, after the meeting, you may choose to join your fellow travellers for dinner and begin getting to know the group before the journey ahead.

    It’s important to attend the welcome meeting at the beginning of your trip — during this time, your leader will collect your travel insurance and emergency contact details.   • This morning, set off on a scenic journey west across Madagascar’s diverse landscapes as you travel toward Miandrivazo. Use the drive to relax, enjoy the changing scenery, or get to know your fellow travellers. Upon arrival, settle into your hotel and attend a briefing about the upcoming two-day cruise along the Tsiribihina River. Later, you'll have time to pick up any last-minute supplies before resting up for the adventure ahead.

    Today's journey involves approximately 10 hours of travel, excluding comfort and sightseeing stops.
    Restroom facilities can be limited in remote areas, and at times you may need to use nature as a bathroom during the journey.For your upcoming river camping experience, we recommend bringing a sleeping bag or sleep sheet, as only a basic blanket is provided.

    Don't forget a towel, waterproof jacket, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat to stay comfortable throughout the trip.

  • Start the day with a short drive to Masiakampy, where a traditional river barge awaits to begin your journey along the Tsiribihina River. Once used to transport tobacco, these spacious flat-bottomed boats now offer a unique way to explore the remote landscapes of western Madagascar. As you cruise through fertile plains and into dramatic river gorges, keep an eye out for wildlife along the riverbanks. Along the way, stop for an easy hike to a hidden waterfall before continuing to a peaceful sandbank, where you'll spend the night camping beneath the stars.

  • Important Information
    • Today's travel time is approximately 1 hour before boarding your river barge.
    • River camping is a basic wilderness experience. Sleeping mats and a blanket are provided, but bringing a sleeping bag or sleep sheet is strongly recommended.
    • Facilities are extremely limited during the river expedition. There are no bathrooms, limited fresh water for washing, and bush toilets will be the only option for the next three days.
    • In some remote areas, a military escort may accompany the group as a precautionary safety measure. This is a routine arrangement and is not expected to impact your travel experience.
    • The Tsiribihina region is a fragile natural environment, so travellers are encouraged to dispose of waste responsibly and help protect the ecosystem.
    • River conditions can vary throughout the year, and the exact departure point may change depending on water levels.
  • Spend a relaxing day cruising deeper into the remote reaches of the Tsiribihina River, surrounded by Madagascar’s untouched natural beauty. As you drift along the water, look out for herds of zebu crossing the river and a variety of birdlife, including colourful bee-eaters, herons, and egrets. Throughout the day, stop to visit local villages and enjoy short walks in search of wildlife. Tonight, camp beside a riverside village, where you'll gather around a campfire and experience traditional Malagasy music and dancing with the local community.

  • Enjoy a final morning cruising along the Tsiribihina River before saying goodbye to the crew and disembarking. Stop in the riverside village of Belo-sur-Tsiribihina to explore the local market and enjoy lunch before setting off on an adventurous 4WD journey to Bekopaka. Upon arrival, take the remainder of the day to relax, enjoy a refreshing swim or shower, and recharge before tomorrow’s exploration of the remarkable Small Tsingy limestone formations.

    Your travel today will be approximately 4h hours 30 min.

    During your road journey in the region you may be accompanied by a military escort for part of or the entire trip as part of a convoy. The convoy will depart from Belo-sur-Tsiribihina at 2 pm and make limited stops. Your safety is of upmost importance and we are confident that should your trip have these escorts that they will not affect the journey or the enjoyment.
  • Today is dedicated to discovering the fascinating landscapes of the Small Tsingy in Bemaraha National Park. Spend the morning trekking through a maze of dramatic limestone pinnacles, navigating narrow passages and enjoying panoramic views from scenic lookout points along the way. In the afternoon, slow the pace with a peaceful canoe ride along the Manambolo River, drifting beneath towering cliffs before exploring nearby caves filled with striking rock formations and ancient Vazimba tombs, linked to Madagascar’s earliest inhabitants.

  • Accommodation within Madagascar's national parks is often simple and remote, offering an authentic wilderness experience rather than modern hotel comforts. Wi-Fi and air conditioning may not always be available.
  • The Great Tsingy features suspended bridges and significant vertical drops that may be challenging for travellers with a fear of heights or vertigo.
  • The reward for travelling off the beaten path is access to some of Madagascar’s most spectacular and secluded landscapes, far from the usual tourist routes.
  • This journey can be combined with other Madagascar adventures, so some travellers may continue on to further destinations after the tour ends.
  • If you're interested in exploring more of the island, consider extending your stay with a longer Madagascar itinerary to experience even more of the country's unique wildlife, cultures, and landscapes.

Accommodation throughout this journey includes a combination of comfortable hotels and two nights of wilderness camping during the Tsiribihina River expedition. The accommodations listed in the itinerary are intended as a guide and may occasionally be substituted with properties of a similar standard if availability requires.
While every effort is made to have rooms ready upon arrival, especially after long travel days, early check-in cannot always be guaranteed. If rooms are not yet available, luggage storage will be arranged so you can begin exploring your destination or relax in shared facilities until check-in time.
