  • Special information
As this trip begins directly in the Galápagos Islands, you can choose to meet your group either at San Cristóbal Airport or at the joining point hotel.

For Sunday departures, the airport meeting time is 11:30 am. For Wednesday and Friday departures, the meeting time is 12:30 pm. Your leader will be waiting in the arrivals hall holding an Intrepid sign for travellers arriving from Quito. If you choose to meet at the hotel instead, you’ll join the group approximately one hour after the airport meeting time.
Please confirm your preferred joining point at least 15 days before departure. If you expect to arrive late, contact the local emergency number listed in the Essential Trip Information.
  • This morning, take a 45-minute boat ride to Kicker Rock, also known as Leon Dormido. Along the way, keep an eye out for nesting frigate birds and blue-footed boobies, and perhaps even spot sea lions swimming nearby. Once at Kicker Rock, jump into the water for an unforgettable snorkelling experience where you may encounter sea turtles, manta rays and harmless Galápagos sharks.

Enjoy lunch onboard before visiting the Interpretation Center to learn about the history of the “enchanted islands” and the important conservation projects protecting this unique ecosystem. Afterwards, walk up to Frigatebird Hill (Cerro Tijeretas) for spectacular views across the bay. Return to town in the late afternoon and enjoy a free evening to relax or explore at your own pace.

Please note that ocean currents in the Galápagos Islands can sometimes be quite strong, so confident swimming skills are required to participate in the snorkelling activities. If you have any concerns about your ability or comfort in the water, be sure to speak with your leader before the excursion.

Depending on the size of the group, travellers may be divided between two boats for this morning’s 45-minute journey to Kicker Rock.
  • Start the day early with a private speedboat journey to Isla Isabela, keeping watch for dolphins and whales along the way. En route, stop at Isla Floreana and take a short walk to a striking black sand beach owned by the Witter family — descendants of some of the earliest settlers in the Galápagos Islands. Here, you’ll learn about the island’s fascinating history and its tiny local community.

Afterwards, grab your snorkelling gear and head into the water to search for colourful tropical fish and sea turtles. Later, enjoy a traditional lunch at Leila — a welcoming family-run restaurant that forms part of the Floreana Community Tourism Association, helping support local families and sustainable tourism initiatives on the island.

In the afternoon, continue your journey to Isla Isabela, where you’ll settle in for the night.

  • This morning, board a small motorboat and cruise out to Las Tintoreras (Shark Alley), keeping an eye out for blue-footed boobies and the famous Galápagos penguin along the way. Take a short walk through a marine iguana nesting area — their dark colouring makes them almost invisible against the volcanic rocks — before arriving at Shark Alley, where white-tipped reef sharks can often be seen resting in the shallow crystal-clear waters.

Afterwards, jump back on the boat and snorkel among sea turtles, playful sea lions, colourful fish, eagle rays and sea stars. Return to Isla Isabela for lunch before visiting the Arnaldo Tupiza Tortoise Breeding Center to observe giant tortoises at different stages of development. Continue to a nearby brackish lagoon, where flamingos can often be spotted feeding in the water.

Later in the day, kayak around the Bay of Puerto Villamil, watching for pelicans, frigate birds and vibrant Sally Lightfoot crabs along the shoreline. If weather conditions allow, set out on a challenging 17-km round-trip hike across rugged volcanic terrain. Beginning in the lush highlands, you’ll watch the scenery gradually transform into dramatic lava landscapes as you climb higher.

After the hike, return to town and enjoy some free time to unwind. Perhaps relax with a book, soothe your muscles after the trek or head down to the water for a refreshing swim before dinner.

  • This morning, board a private speedboat and travel to Isla Santa Cruz. Upon arrival, leave your luggage at the hotel before heading into the lush Santa Cruz Highlands. Your first stop is a family-run organic sugar cane farm, where you’ll tour a traditional trapiche — a mill used for artisanal sugar production — and learn how sugar cane, coffee and cacao are harvested and processed.

Next, enjoy a cooking demonstration featuring encebollado, Ecuador’s famous tuna soup often considered one of the country’s most beloved dishes. Watch as slow-cooked albacore tuna is prepared in a flavourful broth with onions, cilantro and spices, traditionally served with yuca and topped with lime and green onions. Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
If you’d like return flights from Quito included in your adventure, please search for our Best of Galapagos tour (GGTF), which follows a similar itinerary.

This trip includes a challenging 17-km hike (approximately 6 to 7 hours) across rocky volcanic terrain, so sturdy hiking or trail shoes with good support are highly recommended. Please refer to Day 5 of the itinerary for more details.

Travel between the Galápagos Islands is by speedboat, and sea conditions can sometimes make the rides rough and bumpy. If you are prone to seasickness, we recommend consulting a healthcare professional about suitable medication before travelling. Conditions are often rougher between June and August, which may also increase travel times.

Due to the islands’ location near the equator, the sun can be extremely intense. Be sure to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and ideally a rash guard for extra sun protection.

This trip includes snorkelling activities on multiple days, so confident swimming skills are essential. Alternative activities are not available during snorkelling excursions.

The Galápagos is also an ideal destination to disconnect and enjoy nature, though Wi-Fi and internet access can be limited and unreliable throughout the islands. Hot water may also be inconsistent in some locations, so occasional cold showers should be expected during the trip.
Visa information
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a trusted third-party. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements and does not cover full entry visas. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy for stays under 90 days typically do not need a tourist visa. Additional service fees may apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa. Always check official sources before traveling.
Accommodation
Hotel (7 nights)

The accommodation listed in the itinerary is intended as a guide and may occasionally change. If our preferred hotels are unavailable, alternative accommodation of a similar standard will be arranged.
Throughout the trip, we do our best to ensure rooms are ready upon arrival, especially if arriving before standard check-in times. However, immediate check-in cannot always be guaranteed. In these situations, luggage storage will usually be available so you can begin exploring your destination, and on some trips, shared day rooms may also be provided until rooms become available.
Flights
Please note: flight arrangements

We can assist with booking flights from any airport in the United States that is convenient for you. Occasionally, alternative routing or airlines may need to be arranged due to availability, but we will always ensure your flights align with your tour dates and provide the same level of comfort and reliability. Our goal is to make your journey to Italy smooth, stress-free, and perfectly timed with your tour.

Important notes

  1. Due to limited hotel availability in the Galápagos Islands, a single supplement is not available on this trip.
  2. Full passport details are required at the time of booking. The passport used for travel must match the information provided, as this is necessary for purchasing permits and entry tickets to certain sites. Delays in providing these details may result in additional fees or itinerary changes.
  3. All visitors to the Galápagos Islands are required to obtain a Transit Control Card. Please refer to the Entry Requirements section of the Essential Trip Information for full details.
  4. Before boarding your flight to the Galápagos, all luggage must be inspected by the Galapagos Inspection and Quarantine System (SICGAL). Inspection counters are located in the domestic departure areas of Quito and Guayaquil airports. After screening, you may proceed to your airline check-in counter. As this process can take time, please arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure.
  5. The Galapagos National Park fee (USD 200) and Isabela Port fee (USD 10) must be paid in cash upon arrival to the islands. These fees are not included in your trip price.
  6. Please refer to the Special Information section on Day 1 of the itinerary for detailed instructions on joining your group.
  7. Strict environmental regulations are enforced throughout the Galápagos Islands to help protect the region’s extraordinary biodiversity. Intrepid fully supports these conservation measures, including rules regarding wildlife interactions, visiting hours and removing natural items such as shells or coral. Your leader will explain all guidelines in detail at the start of the trip. Failure to follow these rules may result in significant fines or removal from the tour without refund.
