  • Welcome to Tasmania, where your adventure begins in the vibrant harbour city of Hobart, known as Nipaluna to the Muwinina and Palawa peoples – the Traditional Custodians of this land. Meet your group this morning before visiting the Tasmanian Aboriginal culture gallery for an introduction to the island’s rich Indigenous heritage. Then, leave the city behind and travel to the historic village of Richmond, famous for its charming colonial streets and some of Australia’s oldest landmarks. Later, enjoy a tasting at a family-run winery before continuing along the coast to the peaceful seaside town of Bicheno, your home for the next two nights.

  • Today, travel from Bicheno to the spectacular landscapes of Freycinet National Park – a place of turquoise bays, granite peaks and some of Tasmania’s most breathtaking beaches. Join your leader on the scenic walk to the famous Wineglass Bay Lookout, or continue down to the beach itself for a refreshing swim in its crystal-clear waters. After lunch, stroll to Cape Tourville Lighthouse, where sweeping coastal views provide the perfect photo opportunity. Later, return to Bicheno for a relaxed evening, with the option to join a guided penguin tour and watch adorable Little Penguins emerge from the ocean and waddle back to their nesting grounds under the cover of night.

    The walk to Wineglass Bay Lookout is a 3 km/1.5 hour return walk on a Grade 3 trail. It is a gradual uphill walk the whole way (and then back down) with some steep sections, but with many places to stop for a rest. You also have the option to continue from the lookout down to Wineglass Bay beach itself, which will add an additional 3 km/1.5 hours on a trail with many steps and some rough sections.
    To get to Cape Tourville Lighthouse & Lookout is a Grade 1, 600 m/20 min walk mostly on a raised boardwalk.

  • Leave Bicheno behind this morning and journey along Tasmania’s scenic Great Eastern Drive towards the stunning Bay of Fires in the island’s northeast. Famous for its brilliant white beaches, turquoise waters and striking orange-lichen-covered granite boulders, this protected coastal region is one of Tasmania’s most iconic natural wonders. Enjoy a guided walk along the shoreline, taking in the peaceful bays, native wildlife and rugged coastal scenery before continuing inland to the artistic town of Sheffield. Once known for its hydroelectric history, Sheffield is now celebrated for its vibrant street murals, with more than 140 artworks bringing local stories and characters to life. Spend the evening exploring the town at your own pace and discovering its open-air gallery atmosphere.

    Your Bay of Fires walk will depend on weather conditions, but is usually approximately 1 km return along the beach.
  • Today, journey into the breathtaking wilderness of Cradle Mountain National Park – one of Tasmania’s most iconic natural treasures. Towering above ancient forests and glacial lakes, Cradle Mountain’s dramatic landscapes are home to alpine heathlands, cool rainforest and rare native flora. Explore the park on one of several walking trails, including the famous Dove Lake Circuit, where peaceful waters reflect rugged peaks and centuries-old pine trees. Along the way, keep an eye out for local wildlife as your leader helps tailor the walks to suit the group’s pace and interests. Later, continue through Tasmania’s wild west to the harbour town of Strahan, where you’ll settle in for the evening.

    The Dove Lake Circuit is a Grade 3, 6 km circuit typically taking around 2-3 hours. Your leader can suggest other suitable walks for the time spent at Cradle Mountain.

    To best enjoy your time at Cradle Mountain, please keep in mind that sudden changes in weather may occur at any time in Tasmania. Always carry additional warm clothing, including a waterproof outer layer.
  • Spend today uncovering the remote beauty of Tasmania’s rugged West Coast and the ancient wilderness of Takayna/Tarkine – the second largest temperate rainforest in the world. This untouched landscape is filled with dense rainforest, wild rivers and unique ecosystems that have existed since the days of Gondwanaland, when Tasmania was connected to Patagonia and New Zealand. As you explore with your group, learn about the region’s extraordinary biodiversity and keep watch for rare native wildlife, including the endangered Tasmanian devil. After a full day immersed in one of Australia’s last true wilderness areas, return to the harbour town of Strahan in the late afternoon.

    If you prefer to stay back in Strahan today and take the opportunity to embark on a cruise on the Gordon River instead, you are welcome to choose this option. It will mean that you will opt out of the Tarkine day trip, and instead book yourself on the Gordon River Cruise at your own expense. No refund for the missed Tarkine day trip is applicable. We recommend you book your Gordon River Cruise with World Heritage Cruises ahead of time, as seats are limited and book out in advance.
  • On your final day in Tasmania, travel through the dramatic landscapes of Queenstown, where the bare hills tell the story of the region’s mining past. Along the way, stop for scenic short walks beside the Franklin River and through lush rainforest to the beautiful Nelson Falls. Continue to the tranquil waters of Lake St Clair – Australia’s deepest freshwater lake – before crossing the rugged Central Plateau and the picturesque Derwent Valley. Later, return to Hobart, where your Tasmanian adventure comes to an end. If you’d like to spend more time exploring the island, additional nights can be arranged with your booking agent.

    Your trip comes to an end this evening upon arrival in Hobart at around 6 pm. Please take this into consideration when booking your onward travel. We recommend you stay an additional night in Hobart.

Is this trip right for you?
  1. Tasmania may look small on the map, but distances between destinations can be longer than expected. To experience the island’s diverse landscapes, this trip includes several longer driving days. Please check the daily itinerary for estimated travel times. There is also limited time spent in Hobart, so we recommend arriving earlier or extending your stay if you’d like to explore Tasmania’s capital in more depth.
  2. This adventure includes regular walks through national parks, coastal trails and rainforest terrain, making it best suited to travellers with a good level of fitness and mobility. Many of the included experiences are leader-guided walks designed to immerse you in Tasmania’s natural beauty, so comfortable walking shoes and suitable outdoor clothing are essential.
  3. Most walks on this trip are short and relatively easy, although some locations offer more challenging hiking options. Participation in any walk is always optional, and your leader will help recommend routes based on the group’s interests and abilities.

If rooms are not yet available upon arrival, you’ll be able to store your luggage and begin exploring the destination, or in some cases make use of shared day rooms until check-in becomes available.

Start & End Times
Your adventure begins in Hobart with a welcome meeting at 9:30 am on Day 1 at the joining hotel. The trip concludes back in Hobart on Day 6 at approximately 6 pm. Accommodation is not included on the final day, but extra nights can be arranged on request. If you’d like to spend more time exploring Tasmania’s capital, we recommend arriving early or extending your stay after the tour.

Long Travel Days

Physical Rating

Tasmania’s weather can be unpredictable and temperatures often vary throughout the day, especially at higher altitudes and during the evenings. Conditions may range from warm sunshine to cold winds and rain, with occasional snowfall possible at the beginning or end of the season.
