  • Selamat datang! Welcome to Malaysia. Your family adventure begins in Kota Kinabalu – Sabah’s lively capital, set between lush Borneo rainforest and the sparkling South China Sea. Meet your local leader and fellow travellers at a welcome meeting this evening, then perhaps head to the bustling waterfront market to sample freshly grilled seafood and local specialties. If you arrive early, you can visit the Sabah State Museum or take a trip to the nearby islands for swimming and snorkelling in crystal-clear waters.

    • It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time.   • Start the morning with a stand-up paddleboarding adventure along the shores of Tanjung Aru Beach. Glide across calm waters, discover hidden corners of the coastline and learn about the area’s colourful marine life from your guide. Afterwards, enjoy free time with your family to explore Kota Kinabalu however you like – perhaps browse the lively local markets or admire the stunning waterfront Kota Kinabalu City Mosque.

  • After breakfast, journey to Poring Hot Springs for a scenic walk high above the rainforest canopy. Along the way, admire towering bamboo trees and learn about the historic sulphur baths first developed during World War II. Once there, cool off in the natural rock pools, race down the slippery rockslides or relax in the warm mineral-rich waters. Tonight, unwind in a unique reconstructed longhouse surrounded by the peaceful scenery of a tea plantation.

    Accommodation
    • Entry to the hot pools is optional, with different pools available for all ages. Adults may prefer the relaxing sulphur baths, while younger travellers often enjoy the fun slide pools.
    • Please note that the slide pools are closed every Monday for regular cleaning and maintenance.
    • The Poring Canopy Walkway has been closed for major maintenance since July 2025 and will remain unavailable until further notice.
    • When the canopy walkway is closed, your tour leader will arrange alternative activities such as visiting Kipungit Waterfall, exploring the Butterfly Garden or relaxing in the open-air hot spring pools.
    • Tonight’s accommodation is in traditional longhouse-style twin or triple-share rooms with fans and shared bathroom facilities, offering a simple and authentic stay surrounded by nature.
  • Today, travel by private bus to Kampung Batu Puteh – a peaceful village set along the Kinabatangan River. Meet the local community behind KOPEL, a conservation organisation dedicated to protecting the rainforest and creating sustainable opportunities for local families. Learn about their inspiring reforestation projects before taking a boat ride deep into the jungle to your riverside eco camp. Later, enjoy a sunset river cruise in search of wildlife such as macaques, proboscis monkeys and wild orangutans. Tonight, relax by the oxbow lake, enjoy dinner in the heart of nature and fall asleep to the sounds of the rainforest.

    • Today’s journey to Kampung Batu Puteh will take approximately 5 hours by private vehicle.
    • You’ll pack a small overnight bag for your two-night jungle stay, while your main luggage will be safely stored at the KOPEL office.
    • On some departures, accommodation arrangements may vary due to availability, with one night spent at the Eco Camp and one night in the village in rooms with private bathrooms.
    • Your jungle accommodation is simple and eco-friendly, featuring basic huts with mosquito nets and cold-water bathing facilities.
    • As the camp is located deep in the rainforest, electricity is powered by solar energy to minimise disturbance to the wildlife.
    • A torch, insect repellent and rain jacket are highly recommended for your stay. Boots and leech socks are also available to rent for the optional jungle night walk.
  • Wake up to the peaceful sounds of the rainforest and enjoy breakfast surrounded by nature. This morning, travel upriver to the local village to learn more about daily life in the community. Later, join a hands-on traditional cooking class and enjoy a delicious homemade lunch prepared together. Spend the afternoon relaxing, playing board games or spotting more wildlife before setting out on another scenic river cruise. After dinner, grab your headtorch and head into the jungle on a night walk to search for fascinating nocturnal creatures hidden among the trees.

Once in the city, discover its rich Cantonese heritage reflected in the bustling waterfront market, colourful Chinese temples and delicious local cuisine. Enjoy some free time this afternoon to relax, explore the town, catch up on errands or simply unwind by the hotel pool.

  • Leave your main luggage at the hotel before boarding a speedboat to Turtle Island Marine Park. Cruise past traditional fishing villages and bamboo fish traps before arriving at this tropical island paradise. Spend the day relaxing on the beach, swimming in crystal-clear waters or exploring the vibrant marine life beneath the surface. Tonight, experience a truly unforgettable wildlife encounter as giant green turtles come ashore to lay their eggs beneath the moonlight. You’ll also witness protected hatchlings being released into the ocean – a magical and emotional moment for the whole family. As this is a fragile conservation area, it’s important to follow all guidance from your leader and local rangers to help protect the turtles and their habitat. Overnight accommodation on the island is simple, but the experience is one you’ll never forget.

    • Tonight may be a late evening, as nesting turtles sometimes arrive on the beach after 10 pm. Families will wait together in the dining hall until called by the park rangers, so bringing games, cards or drawing supplies for children is recommended.
    • Artificial light can disturb both nesting turtles and hatchlings, so visitors must carefully follow all instructions from the local rangers to help protect these incredible animals and their natural habitat.
    • From November to February, Borneo experiences monsoon season, and sea conditions on the journey to Turtle Island can occasionally become rough. In rare cases, the itinerary may need to change if boat travel is considered unsafe or cancelled due to weather conditions.
  • This morning, return to the mainland and prepare for one of Borneo’s most unforgettable experiences – meeting the orangutans of Sepilok. Visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where rescued and orphaned orangutans are cared for and prepared for life back in the wild. Watch these gentle animals swing through the trees to the feeding platform and visit the nursery to see young orangutans learning to climb and explore. Afterwards, continue to the Sun Bear Conservation Centre to meet rescued sun bears before heading back to your accommodation. Tonight, gather with your family and fellow travellers for a final dinner to celebrate an incredible Borneo adventure together.

Is this trip right for you?
  • There's a wide range of accommodation on this trip, from hotels and guesthouses to jungle camps. Some may be a little more basic than your standard Intrepid hotel, but their unique location and close proximity to wildlife is what makes them special.
  • The average age of children who travelled on this trip in the last year is 11 years old. Most children on Intrepid Family trips are between 10 and 14 years old.
Visa information
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a trusted third-party. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements and does not cover full entry visas. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy for stays under 90 days typically do not need a tourist visa. Additional service fees may apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa. Always check official sources before traveling.

GENERAL ROOMING CONFIGURATIONS:
Family of two: All family groupings of two will be accommodated in a twin room.
Family of three: Wherever possible we will put you in a triple room. Please be aware that in some places triple rooms are in short supply. This means that a triple room will often be a twin room with a rollaway bed or mattress on the floor. Where triple rooms aren’t available it will be at your discretion which of your family takes the single room.
Family of four or more: You will most likely be accommodated in two twin rooms. Where possible, we will accommodate your family in a quadruple room.

Important notes

1. FAMILY TRIPS: Please note that these trips are for adults and children travelling together and there must be at least one child under 18 with you.

2. CHILD AGE: The minimum age for children on this trip is 5 years old. Most children travelling on Intrepid Family trips are between 10 and 14 years old.

3. CHILD PRICE: Children aged 17 years and under at time of travel on this trip, are eligible to receive 20% off the full adult price.

4. SINGLE SUPPLEMENT: A single supplement is available for adults wishing to have a private room to themselves. The single supplement excludes Day 3 (Sabah Tea Garden) , Days 4 & 5 (Jungle Camp) and Day 7 (Turtle Island), and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.

5. ACCOMMODATION: For some departures throughout the year we will only spend 1 night in the Eco Camp and 1 night in the Village in accommodation with attached bathrooms due to availability.

6. WEATHER: November to February is monsoon season for Selingan (Turtle Island) so if travelling during this time you may experience big waves and choppy seas. In cases of extreme weather, the trip to Selingan may be cancelled and alternative arrangements made. 

7. Some governments may have increased travel advice levels in place for parts of Eastern Sabah, including Sandakan and Turtle Island. Check your government’s travel advice before departure. Travel insurance is mandatory and must cover all destinations and activities on the Itinerary. If you are unsure about your level of coverage, please contact your insurer. In addition to the increased security presence in the region, we comply with local regulations, including avoiding night boat travel and using approved routes and vessels.
