If you arrive early, take the chance to explore at your own pace – perhaps stroll through the beautiful gardens of the Summer Palace, visit the peaceful Lama Temple or sample local favourites like Peking duck and freshly made jianbing. After the meeting, settle into your accommodation and maybe join your fellow travellers for dinner, with your local leader ready to recommend some excellent spots to eat.

If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
  • This morning, join your leader for a guided walking tour through the heart of Beijing. Begin at Tiananmen Square – one of the world’s largest public squares and a powerful symbol of modern China. Surrounded by landmarks such as the Gate of Heavenly Peace, Mao’s Mausoleum and the Great Hall of the People, the square holds deep cultural and historical importance. From here, step into the magnificent Forbidden City, a vast imperial palace complex built more than 500 years ago. Wander through its grand halls and courtyards while learning about the lives of emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Afterwards, continue into Beijing’s traditional Hutongs – narrow alleyways lined with historic courtyard homes that offer a glimpse into the city’s old neighbourhoods and local way of life. The remainder of the afternoon is free for you to explore Beijing at your own pace.

  • Today, travel to the first section of the Great Wall on your journey through one of the world’s greatest engineering achievements. Stretching more than 6,000 km west of Beijing, the Great Wall was originally built to defend ancient Chinese empires from northern invasions. Although it could not fully prevent attacks, it remains one of China’s most extraordinary and iconic landmarks. Your hike begins at the famous Mutianyu section, known for its impressive restoration and stunning mountain scenery. As you walk along the Wall, admire panoramic views of the rolling hills and watch the ancient structure wind endlessly across the landscape. This evening, settle into Jiankou Village for an overnight stay surrounded by the peaceful countryside.

Proper hiking shoes with good grip are essential for this trek. Over the next few days, you’ll explore sections of the Great Wall that remain unrestored and unmaintained by the government. While this offers a rare chance to experience the Wall in its original form, some paths can be steep, uneven and slippery.

There is very little shade along the route, so make sure to carry plenty of water and apply sunscreen regularly. Please bring a refillable water bottle, which can be topped up at the guesthouse or from the water container in the support vehicle before the hike begins.
  • Today, explore the dramatic Jiankou section of the Great Wall, often referred to as the “Wild Wall” due to its rugged, untouched condition. Built along steep mountain ridges, this section features ancient watchtowers perched high above breathtaking landscapes and remains completely unrestored, offering a truly authentic experience. For those seeking an extra challenge, there’s the option to tackle the steep climb at Sanshibadeng, also known as the “Spider-Man Wall,” where rewarding panoramic views await. As you hike along these original sections of the Wall, you may also choose to help preserve the area by picking up any litter you come across. Later this afternoon, continue to Gubeikou Village and perhaps end the day watching the sunset from this extraordinary historic landmark.

Similar to Jiankou, this section preserves much of its original structure, offering a more authentic and adventurous hiking experience. Climb the footpath to the Wall and continue towards Tower 10, passing steep ridges, uneven stone pathways and spectacular views over the surrounding mountains and the Gubeikou Reservoir. Later in the afternoon, return to your guesthouse in Gubeikou Village, where you’ll enjoy a hands-on cultural experience by learning how to make traditional Chinese dumplings with your local host.

Along the route, you’ll pass numerous ancient watchtowers, including the impressive three-storey 24 Window Tower. Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
  • This is an active walking and trekking adventure, so a good level of fitness is required. You’ll hike around 10 km per day over five days, with elevation gains between 300 and 500 m. Some sections of the Great Wall are steep and uneven, so proper hiking shoes and comfortable trekking clothing are essential.
  • As the itinerary includes limited time in Beijing, we recommend arriving earlier or extending your stay to explore more of the city’s incredible attractions and culture.
  • Famous sites such as Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City can be very busy with both local and international visitors. Comfortable walking shoes and a little patience will help you enjoy these iconic landmarks more comfortably.

Accommodation
Hotel (3 nights), Guesthouse (4 nights)
HOTEL ROOMS:
Some travellers may find that mattresses in China are firmer than what they are used to at home. If needed, you can request an extra quilt or additional bedding from the hotel for extra comfort.
SMOKING ROOMS:
Smoking is common in China, and many hotels may not provide fully non-smoking rooms. In larger hotels with central air conditioning, smoke odours can occasionally travel between rooms. While hotels aim to clean and ventilate rooms thoroughly, some lingering smoke smell may still occur. If this becomes an issue, please speak with your tour leader about the possibility of changing rooms.
WIFI:
WiFi is generally available in hotel reception areas and may also be accessible in guest rooms. Your leader can advise on the best places to connect during the trip.
GUESTHOUSES:
In rural areas, accommodation may be in simple family-run guesthouses that offer an authentic local experience. Facilities are more basic than hotels, and towels may not always be provided. At times, the group may be split between nearby guesthouses located within walking distance of each other.
