Your guesthouse tonight is relatively basic compared to the hotels you’ll stay in on this trip, though all rooms have private facilities and Wi-Fi is available. In winter, (November to February) accommodation may be in an alternate guesthouse with better heating. In this case, you may not be able to see the sunset on the Great Wall.
  • Today, discover one of the world’s most iconic landmarks – the Great Wall of China. Spend time exploring this ancient wonder, capturing unforgettable photos and learning about the fascinating history behind one of China’s greatest achievements. Stretching over 6,000 km west of Beijing, the Wall was originally built to defend Chinese empires from northern invaders. Although it never fully succeeded in its purpose, it remains an extraordinary feat of engineering and one of the most recognisable sites on Earth. Enjoy a hike of around two hours along a quieter, more authentic section of the Wall, far from the large tourist crowds. As the Wall winds endlessly across the hills, you may even feel like you have the entire place to yourself. Later, leave this incredible landmark behind and travel to Beijing, the vibrant capital city and final destination of your journey.

There are many steps and slopes on the Wall, so you'll need to concentrate hard to keep your footing. For this activity, you'll need reasonable fitness and walking shoes with good support and grip.

There's an option to take a chairlift up the hill to get on the wall. You may choose to do this at your own expense but please be aware that you may be separate from the group in this case. The chairlift will close during winter (November to March) and may occasionally close on days when the weather condition is not suitable.
  • This morning, head into the heart of Beijing to explore Tiananmen Square – one of the largest public squares in the world and an important symbol of modern China. Surrounded by landmarks such as the Gate of Heavenly Peace, Mao’s Mausoleum and the Great Hall of the People, the square holds deep cultural and historical significance. From here, step into the magnificent Forbidden City, the vast imperial palace complex that remained closed to ordinary citizens for centuries. Built over 500 years ago, this extraordinary site offers a glimpse into the power and grandeur of the Ming and Qing dynasties as you wander through its impressive halls, courtyards and ancient architecture.

Later, enjoy free time to discover more of Beijing at your own pace – perhaps visit the beautiful Temple of Heaven or explore the city’s vibrant streets. In the evening, gather with your fellow travellers for a farewell dinner and celebrate the end of your adventure with the famous flavours of Beijing duck and a toast to an unforgettable journey.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
  • Prepare for a few long travel days, as this fast-paced adventure covers more than 2,000 km across China without any domestic flights.
  • This itinerary includes many of China’s biggest highlights in just eight days, so consider arriving earlier or staying longer in Shanghai or Beijing to explore these incredible cities in more depth.
  • As this is a short, city-focused journey, there is limited time to discover China’s natural scenery or more remote destinations. If you’re looking for a longer and more in-depth experience, consider trips like China Experience or Beijing to Hong Kong Adventure.
  • China’s famous landmarks attract large numbers of both local and international visitors, so some patience and comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended when visiting the country’s most popular sites.
Visa information
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a trusted third-party. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements and does not cover full entry visas. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy for stays under 90 days typically do not need a tourist visa. Additional service fees may apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa. Always check official sources before traveling.
Accommodation
Hotel (6 nights), Guesthouse (1 night)
HOTEL ROOMS:
Some travellers may find that mattresses in China are firmer than what they are used to at home. If needed, you can request an extra quilt or additional bedding from the hotel for added comfort.
SMOKING ROOMS:
Smoking is still common in many parts of China, and some hotels may not have fully designated non-smoking rooms. In larger hotels with central air conditioning, smoke odours can occasionally travel between rooms. While hotels do their best to clean and ventilate rooms thoroughly, a slight smell of smoke may sometimes remain. If this happens, please speak with your tour leader about the possibility of changing rooms.
WIFI:
WiFi is usually available in hotel reception areas and is sometimes accessible in guest rooms as well. Your leader can recommend the best places to connect during the trip.
GUESTHOUSES:
In smaller rural areas, accommodation may be in simple family-run guesthouses that offer a more authentic local experience. Facilities are generally more basic than in hotels, and towels may not always be provided. On occasion, the group may stay in separate guesthouses located within walking distance of one another.
