Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
Timor-Leste remains largely off the typical tourist trail, meaning infrastructure is limited and accommodation is simple. Expect clean and comfortable lodgings with basic facilities, including fans, squat toilets, and traditional bucket (mandi-style) showers. On Atauro Island, the group will stay in different homestays, and standards may vary between households.

Some local guides may be new to the tourism industry. By travelling here, you’re supporting the next generation of Timorese tourism professionals. Our local operator works closely with universities to provide hands-on training opportunities for graduate students.
A good level of fitness is required for the hike to Mt. Ramelau (2,986 m). The trek begins early, with a 2:30 am start, and takes approximately 5 hours round trip.

Visits to sites such as Santa Cruz Cemetery, the Chega Exhibition, and the Timorese Resistance Archive & Museum involve confronting history that some travellers may find emotional. These experiences offer important insight into Timor-Leste’s past. If you prefer not to take part, your leader can suggest alternative activities.
Visa information
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a trusted third-party. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements and does not cover full entry visas. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy for stays under 90 days typically do not need a tourist visa. Additional service fees may apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa. Always check official sources before traveling.
Accommodation
Hotel (4 nights), Guesthouse (2 nights), Homestay (2 nights)
Throughout this journey, you’ll stay in a mix of hotels, guesthouses, and homestays. Guesthouse accommodation is simple but comfortable, typically featuring fans, squat toilets, and traditional bucket (mandi-style) showers. As travel in rural Timor-Leste involves remote areas with limited infrastructure, facilities are basic. However, we work closely with trusted local partners to ensure all guesthouses meet standards of safety, cleanliness, and comfort, selecting properties with strong reputations and secure locations.

Homestay – Atauro Island
On Atauro Island, you’ll stay in homestays hosted by local families, located close to one another and just a short walk from the beach. Electricity is limited, with regular outages between 10:00 pm and 7:00 am, though evenings are typically cool and comfortable thanks to the sea breeze. Please note that towels are not provided, so you may wish to bring your own.
