Tour program
  • Jambo! Welcome to Kenya.
Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm, and you’re free to arrive at any time before then. If you get in early, consider exploring some of Nairobi’s highlights — visit the National Museum of Kenya, the Karen Blixen Museum, or the highly recommended Bomas of Kenya, where traditional homesteads from across Kenya are showcased in an open-air setting.
  • Accommodation
    Hotel (1 night)
  • Meals
There are no meals included on this day.
  • Optional activities
    • Nairobi - City Experience Urban Adventure - USD45
  • Special information
It’s important that you attend the welcome meeting, as we’ll be collecting insurance details and next-of-kin information at this time. If you expect to be late, please inform your travel agent or hotel reception in advance. You can also check with reception or look for a notice in the lobby for details on where the meeting will take place.
While in Nairobi, please be mindful that petty theft can occur. Keep valuables close to you — ideally in a neck wallet or money belt — or use the hotel safe if available.

If you plan to explore, seek local advice on safe areas, especially later in the day. Avoid leaving bags unattended in public places like restaurants or bars, and stay aware of your surroundings. It’s also a good idea to keep digital copies of important travel documents, as this can save time and stress if anything goes missing.
  • Depart early and set off for Mto wa Mbu in your overland truck, crossing the border from Kenya into Tanzania — so be sure to keep your passport handy. Along the way, you’ll stop at an ATM and a local market or shop to pick up any supplies for the days ahead. On arrival, take time to explore this charming village, offering an authentic glimpse into everyday life in rural Africa, far from the usual tourist routes.

Your travel time today will be approximately 10 hours.

Your camp tonight has Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, and optional upgrades (subject to availability). We recommend using local currency for any purchases or upgrades.
  • Rise early, pack your camping and personal gear into a six-person jeep, and set off for an unforgettable journey into the Serengeti National Park via the Ngorongoro Crater. Begin with a safari across the crater floor, spending 3–4 hours exploring this perfectly preserved volcanic caldera, home to an incredible concentration of wildlife — including black rhinos, lions, leopards, elephants, zebras and hippos.

With around 30,000 animals living here year-round, the game viewing — and photo opportunities — are exceptional. Continue onward to the vast plains of the Serengeti, where landscapes shift from lush green after the rains to golden and dry in the season’s heat. This is Africa at its most iconic, with endless herds and powerful predators roaming free. Tonight, camp within the park and fall asleep to the distant sounds of the wild.

  •  Included activities
    • Ngorongoro Crater - 4x4 Game Drive
    • Serengeti National Park - Morning 4WD Safari
  • Special information
Tonight’s camp is basic, with limited running water and no Wi-Fi or upgrade options available. Located within Serengeti National Park, the campsite is unfenced, meaning wildlife such as buffalo and hyenas may pass close by after dark — an unforgettable part of the experience. On arrival, your leader will provide a thorough safety briefing to ensure everyone’s well-being.

In the Ngorongoro Crater region, you may come across Maasai villages offering cultural visits. We recommend avoiding these experiences, as they can present an artificial version of Maasai culture and may have a negative impact on local communities.
  • Wake before sunrise and head out on an early game drive in Serengeti National Park, when wildlife is at its most active. Return to camp around 11 am for brunch, then enjoy a relaxing midday break before heading out again in the cooler afternoon hours for another safari, returning in time for dinner.

For a truly unforgettable experience, you can opt for a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti (pre-booking required). After an early pickup and safety briefing, drift silently above the plains at dawn — sometimes close to the treetops, sometimes high above — taking in sweeping views of the landscape and the movement of wildlife below. After landing, celebrate with a five-star bush breakfast before returning to camp.

Please note that if you take part in the balloon experience, you will miss the morning portion of the included game drive.
  • Rise with the sun and set out on a final game drive as you leave Serengeti National Park behind. Then hop back into your overland vehicle and continue to Mto wa Mbu.
After setting up camp, join a guided walk through local farms and homes to gain insight into everyday village life and connect with the community. In the evening, enjoy a delicious home-style dinner in town, full of local flavors.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
No two journeys in Africa are ever the same. Expect early starts to make the most of prime safari hours or to get ahead of traffic on longer travel days. Travel times may vary, and changing weather or road conditions can lead to unexpected detours — all part of the adventure.

This is an overland experience, meaning you’ll travel as a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visit remote communities, set up camp, and occasionally embrace the basics in the bush. It’s all part of getting closer to nature and enjoying incredible views of Africa’s iconic wildlife.
Camping in Serengeti National Park without fences is a truly unforgettable experience, but it’s important to follow your leader’s safety instructions, which will be explained on arrival.

The itinerary also includes a range of optional activities. Please note that these are suggestions only — availability may vary, and prices are approximate and set by local providers.
Visa information
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a trusted third-party. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements and does not cover full entry visas. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy for stays under 90 days typically do not need a tourist visa. Additional service fees may apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa. Always check official sources before traveling.
Accommodation
Accommodation on this trip includes camping with basic facilities (2 nights), camping with facilities (5 nights), hotel stays (2 nights) and bungalows (2 nights). Most nights are spent in two-person canvas dome tents, with camping mattresses provided.
The style of accommodation varies depending on the route and location. In remote areas, you’ll stay at campsites or occasional wild camps, while in towns and cities, accommodation is typically in hotels, with meals taken at local restaurants.

On some nights, you may stay at campsites located within hotel grounds, where rooms or cabins could be available. In these cases, you may have the option to upgrade from camping to a room (subject to availability), usually costing around USD 40–100 per twin room per night. These upgrades cannot be pre-booked, and standards may vary, so it’s recommended to view the room before deciding.
Please note that some accommodations may be dormitory-style, meaning you could share with other travellers or be placed in same-sex rooms. Campsite facilities are generally more basic than in Western countries — bathrooms may be simple, hot water is not always guaranteed, and toilet paper is often not provided. Wild camps have no facilities at all.

Spare tents may be carried on the vehicle but cannot be used without purchasing a single supplement, as they are reserved for operational needs.

If you require a sleep apnea machine, please ensure it is battery-operated, as power in lodges and tented camps is often generator-based and may not be available overnight.
Flights
Please note: flight arrangements

Occasionally, alternative routing or airlines may need to be arranged due to availability, but we will always ensure your flights align with your tour dates and provide the same level of comfort and reliability. Our goal is to make your journey to Italy smooth, stress-free, and perfectly timed with your tour.

  2. An optional sunrise balloon safari in Serengeti National Park is available on this itinerary. As spaces are limited (maximum 16 passengers), we recommend booking in advance — contact your booking agent for more information.
  3. This is a combination trip made up of two popular itineraries, so your group composition and tour leader may change during the journey.
  4. During the Zanzibar portion, group sizes may occasionally exceed the usual maximum of 22 travellers due to overlapping departures and arrivals.
  5. The trip begins in Nairobi on Day 1 at 6 pm and concludes upon your return to Stone Town on Day 12. Please ensure any onward flights are scheduled after 2 pm on the final day.
