Tour program
  • Sawubona — welcome to South Africa!
Your adventure kicks off with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive earlier in the day, consider visiting the Apartheid Museum for a powerful introduction to the country’s history before meeting your group. After the meeting, you might like to head out for an optional group dinner — a great chance to get to know your fellow travellers. Your leader will be happy to recommend some of the best local bars and restaurants to start your trip right.
  • Accommodation
    Hotel (1 night)
  • Meals
There are no meals included on this day.
  • Included activities
    • Complimentary Arrival Transfer
  • Special information
It’s essential that you attend the welcome meeting, as we’ll be collecting insurance details and next-of-kin information at this time. If you expect to be late, please inform your travel agent or hotel reception in advance. You can also check with reception or look for a notice in the lobby for details on the meeting location.

If you plan to explore Johannesburg independently, be sure to seek local advice on which areas are safe to visit, especially after dark. As with many major cities, crime levels can be higher than you may be used to, so staying aware and cautious is important.
  • Rise early and depart from Johannesburg — the ‘City of Gold’ — as your African adventure officially begins. Today involves a longer drive, but the journey is part of the experience as you make your way into the Greater Kruger National Park ecosystem. As the landscapes shift and wildlife territory begins, you’ll feel the excitement build. By evening, arrive at your campsite inside the park, where you can unwind, share dinner with your group, and settle in for your first night surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

  • Special information
Today’s travel time is approximately five hours. During peak seasons (May to September and December), campsite availability inside Kruger National Park may be limited, and in such cases, accommodation will be arranged at a campsite just outside the park.
  • After breakfast, set out on a full-day 4WD safari through Kruger National Park — one of the largest and most diverse game reserves in southern Africa. Home to over 500 bird species, 100 reptiles and 150 mammals, the park offers incredible chances to spot wildlife, including elephants, rhinos, buffalo, giraffes and more. It’s also a refuge for vulnerable species like the southern ground hornbill, blue crane and the endangered African wild dog. Spend the day tracking animals, birdwatching and stopping at scenic waterholes and viewpoints before returning to your camp inside the park for the night.

  • Travel to the outskirts of Kruger National Park, where you’ll spend a truly special evening camping at the headquarters of the Black Mambas. Supported by The Intrepid Foundation in partnership with Helping Rhinos, this inspiring team of 42 women is the world’s first all-female anti-poaching unit, protecting 20,000 hectares of the Olifants West Nature Reserve within the Greater Kruger ecosystem. Challenging traditional norms, they play a vital role in safeguarding wildlife through innovative, non-violent methods.
Join the Mambas on a guided bush walk to see how they locate and remove snares, then share a lantern-lit dinner before gathering around the campfire to hear their powerful stories and firsthand experiences in conservation.

  • Say goodbye to the Black Mambas and continue your journey toward the Botswana border, heading for the scenic Goo Moremi Gorge. Shaped by perennial streams, this striking natural site features deep gorges, cascading waterfalls and clear pools surrounded by lush vegetation. It’s a haven for birdlife, including species that feed on fish and small crabs, and a breeding ground for the endangered Cape vulture. Keep an eye out for baboons and rock hyrax along the cliffs — and if you’re lucky, you might even spot elusive wildlife like leopards, hyenas or kudu in this rugged landscape.

Chalets are solar powered, so hot water is reliant on the weather.
  • Today, travel from Palapye to Nata, where your lodge sits on the edge of the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans — one of the largest salt flats in the world, stretching over 12,000 square kilometers. On arrival, head out on a three-hour open-vehicle excursion through Nata Bird Sanctuary to explore these endless, otherworldly landscapes.
Surrounded by the Kalahari Desert, the pans are dry and shimmering for much of the year, creating surreal heat mirages across the horizon. After the rains, however, the landscape transforms into a haven for migratory birds and wildlife. This evening, unwind and enjoy a restful night at your comfortable lodge.

  • Today, journey to Victoria Falls as you cross into Zimbabwe. After lunch, continue to your permanent tent set within a spacious rest camp and take some time to settle in. Later, you may choose to visit the falls — stretching nearly a mile wide and plunging 108 meters into a dramatic gorge, with spray often visible from miles away. In the dry season, the mist clears to reveal rocky islets in the river below. Alternatively, explore a variety of activities available at the local centre. This evening, gather with your group for dinner and celebrate the incredible journey you’ve shared.

  • Optional activities
    • Victoria Falls - Entrance & Visit - USD58
  • Special information
Today’s travel time is approximately four hours.
Please note that the entrance fee to Victoria Falls is not included in the trip price. This is because pre-purchased group tickets require a guided visit, and we believe your first experience of the falls is best enjoyed freely and at your own pace.

While in the area, you may come across operators offering a “Walk with the Lions” experience. We strongly discourage participation in this activity, as it does not align with responsible travel practices. These experiences are linked to captive breeding and unethical wildlife tourism, including canned hunting. We encourage all travellers to observe wildlife in their natural habitats with respect and care.
  • There are no activities planned for today, and your trip comes to an end after breakfast. If you choose to stay longer at Victoria Falls, you’ll find plenty of optional activities to enjoy — including a scenic helicopter flight for a truly unforgettable view of this natural wonder.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
No two journeys in Africa are ever the same, so travel times may vary depending on weather and road conditions — it’s all part of the adventure.

This is an overland trip, meaning you’ll travel as a group in a purpose-built vehicle. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, sliding windows allow for a refreshing breeze and great opportunities to capture wildlife along the way. Drive days can be long, but the journey itself — and the camaraderie with your fellow travellers — is a big part of the experience.
Expect a few early starts, whether to catch the best wildlife viewing hours or to get ahead of traffic on longer travel days. The itinerary also includes a range of optional activities, though availability and prices may vary depending on local providers.
This trip can also be combined with other adventures into a longer “combo” journey, meaning some of your fellow travellers may continue on to explore more of Africa after this tour.
Visa information
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a trusted third-party. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements and does not cover full entry visas. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy for stays under 90 days typically do not need a tourist visa. Additional service fees may apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa. Always check official sources before traveling.
Accommodation
Accommodation on this trip includes a mix of hotel (1 night), lodge (1 night), chalet with shared facilities (1 night), permanent tented overland camp (1 night), and camping with facilities (3 nights).

Throughout the journey, you’ll experience a variety of stays — from comfortable lodges to fully equipped campsites and permanent tents. When camping, all essentials are provided, including tents, sleeping mats, and sleeping bags, and your crew will take care of setting everything up for you.
On some nights, you may stay at campsites located within hotel grounds, where rooms or cabins could be available. In these cases, you’ll have the option to upgrade from camping to a room (subject to availability), with prices typically ranging from USD 60–120 per twin room per night. Please note that these upgrades cannot be pre-booked.
Flights
Please note: flight arrangements

We can assist with booking flights from any airport in the United States that is convenient for you. Occasionally, alternative routing or airlines may need to be arranged due to availability, but we will always ensure your flights align with your tour dates and provide the same level of comfort and reliability. Our goal is to make your journey to Italy smooth, stress-free, and perfectly timed with your tour.

Important notes

  1. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer your own room throughout the trip. It applies to all nights and is subject to availability — please speak with your booking agent for more details.
  2. This trip features a mix of camping and other accommodation styles. When camping, all equipment — including tents, sleeping mats, and sleeping bags — is provided and set up for you by the crew.
  3. Border crossing times in this region can be unpredictable. What may take an hour one day could take several hours the next, which may occasionally impact the order of activities. We recommend allowing for flexibility and bringing a patient mindset to make the most of the journey.
