Head out this morning to Kakum National Park – a pristine rainforest teeming with birdlife, butterflies and rich plant diversity. This morning, visit Elmina’s lively fish market, where brightly painted boats line the shore and the day’s fresh catch is brought in. Largely run by women, the market buzzes with energy – a vivid mix of sights, sounds and the rhythm of daily trade.
Then continue to Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site overlooking the Atlantic. Once a key hub in the transatlantic slave trade, the castle offers a powerful and sobering glimpse into history. On a guided tour, walk through the dark, airless dungeons where enslaved people were held for weeks, and witness the stark contrast with the governor’s quarters above – airy rooms with large windows and sweeping ocean views that underscore the inequality of that era.
In the afternoon, return to Accra. If you wish, you can visit the Arts Centre for National Culture, a great place to browse local crafts and pick up meaningful souvenirs.
