Famous for its grand bridges, medieval riverside quarter, and maze of cobbled streets lined with historic houses and lively cafés, Porto is also the birthplace of its most iconic export—port wine. This evening, meet your group and leader at a welcome meeting at 6 pm. Afterwards, you may wish to head out for an optional dinner—your leader will be happy to recommend some local favorites.

It’s important to attend the welcome meeting at the beginning of your trip — during this time, your leader will collect your travel insurance and emergency contact details. If you think you might arrive late, please let your travel agent or the hotel reception know in advance. You can also check with reception or look for a note posted in the lobby for details about the meeting’s time and location.
  • Start your day with a leader-led orientation walk to get a feel for Porto and its unique atmosphere. One of the best ways to truly experience the city is through its most famous export, so enjoy an included tasting of Portugal’s iconic port wine. Afterward, the day is yours to explore at your own pace. Wander through the UNESCO-listed Ribeira district, where narrow alleys, staircases, and baroque churches create a postcard-perfect setting. You might visit the enchanting Livraria Lello, known for its neo-Gothic design and striking crimson staircase, climb the Clérigos Tower for sweeping city views, or stroll along Aliados Avenue to admire its elegant, French-inspired architecture. In the evening, consider a scenic cruise along the Douro River aboard a traditional rabelo boat for a different perspective of the city.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
Here’s a clean, polished rephrase in your style:
Please pack light, as you’ll be travelling on public transport where storage space is limited. You’ll need to carry your luggage over cobblestone streets, lift it onto racks, and navigate stairs with ease.
Portugal can get very hot in summer, with temperatures exceeding 40°C (100°F). Be sure to stay hydrated, use sun protection, and wear light, breathable clothing to stay comfortable while exploring.
If you have extra time or can’t find suitable dates, consider extending your journey with other regional trips such as Explore Spain & Portugal (ZMSI) or Madrid to Marrakech (ZMSH), which continues into Morocco.
Visa information
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a trusted third-party. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements and does not cover full entry visas. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy for stays under 90 days typically do not need a tourist visa. Additional service fees may apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa. Always check official sources before traveling.
Accommodation
Hotel (6 nights)
Accommodation throughout the trip is in hotels, as outlined in the daily itinerary. Please note that this is a guideline only and may be subject to change. In rare cases where our preferred properties are unavailable, we will arrange accommodation of a similar standard.
We do our best to have rooms ready upon arrival, especially if reaching the hotel before standard check-in time. However, this cannot always be guaranteed. If rooms are not yet available, you’ll be able to store your luggage and begin exploring your destination, or in some cases, make use of shared day rooms until check-in is possible.
Flights
Please note: flight arrangements

We can assist with booking flights from any airport in the United States that is convenient for you. Occasionally, alternative routing or airlines may need to be arranged due to availability, but we will always ensure your flights align with your tour dates and provide the same level of comfort and reliability. Our goal is to make your journey to Italy smooth, stress-free, and perfectly timed with your tour.
