Whisky & Ancient Wonders in the Far North of the UK

Discover Scotland’s Orkney Islands

Set off to the wild northern edge of the UK, where the Orkney Islands reveal a fascinating mix of ancient history, rugged beauty, and timeless charm. Just beyond the northern tip of Scotland, this remote archipelago offers an unforgettable journey shaped by both land and sea.

Why you'll love this trip

  • Step Into Ancient History
Walk among some of Europe’s oldest sites, from Skara Brae to the Ring of Brodgar — it truly feels like traveling thousands of years back in time.
  • Discover Kirkwall Like a Local
Explore Orkney’s vibrant capital on a guided walk and uncover unique traditions, including the legendary (and slightly wild) game of ‘Ba’.
  • Dive Into Wartime Stories
Visit the Scapa Flow Museum on the island of Hoy and uncover powerful stories from one of Britain’s most important naval bases.
  • Taste Authentic Scottish Whisky
Enjoy cozy evenings in local pubs where you’ll sample some of Orkney’s finest whiskies alongside your group.
  • Explore at Your Own Pace
With free time built in, you can choose between diving deeper into history, relaxing by the coast, or visiting a local distillery.
  • Small Group, Big Experience
Travel with a passionate local leader and like-minded explorers, making every moment more personal and engaging.
Over five incredible days, you’ll uncover the very best of Orkney, starting from the Highland gateway of Inverness and settling into the charming town of Kirkwall as your base. Step back thousands of years as you wander through the remarkably preserved Neolithic village of Skara Brae — older than Stonehenge — and dive into maritime history at the iconic Scapa Flow Museum on the island of Hoy.

Tour program
  • Welcome to Scotland — and to Inverness, the lively capital of the Scottish Highlands, known for its rich history, stunning scenery, and its famous neighbor, Loch Ness. But today, instead of hunting for Nessie, your adventure begins as you meet your local leader and fellow travelers at Inverness Railway Station.

From here, journey north by train to Thurso, before continuing to the nearby port of Scrabster to board your ferry to the Orkney Islands. As you sail across, unwind over an evening meal and take in breathtaking coastal views — including the dramatic Old Man of Hoy, the tallest sea stack in the UK.
Arriving in the charming harbor town of Stromness, you’ll transfer privately to Kirkwall, Orkney’s main hub. After a full day of travel, settle into your accommodation and relax. If you’re feeling up for it, head out for a gentle walk through the town centre or enjoy a drink as you soak in your first taste of island life.
  • Accommodation
    • Guesthouse (1 night)
  • Meals
There are no meals included on this day.
  • Special information
It’s important to attend the welcome meeting at the beginning of your trip — during this time, your leader will collect your travel insurance and emergency contact details. If you think you might arrive late, please let your travel agent or the hotel reception know in advance. You can also check with reception or look for a note posted in the lobby for details about the meeting’s time and location.
  • Here’s your rephrase in a smooth, engaging Eurotour style:
This morning, dive into the lively atmosphere of Kirkwall — the beating heart of Orkney. Join your local guide for a walking tour through its charming streets as you uncover the town’s deep-rooted Viking heritage. Along the way, visit highlights like the striking St Magnus Cathedral (dating back to 1137), the peaceful Peedie Sea, and the narrow winding lanes where the traditional ‘Ba’ game still comes to life each year.
In the afternoon, enjoy some free time to explore at your own pace. You might choose to revisit your favorite spots, browse local craft shops, or step inside one of the town’s museums or historic landmarks. If you’re up for something more active, your guide can lead a short hike up Wideford Hill, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views over Kirkwall and the surrounding islands.

Prefer a slower pace? Visit a local whisky distillery, discover unique jewellery and handmade goods, or settle into a cozy pub for a relaxed break.
After dinner, weather permitting, head out on a short evening walk beyond Kirkwall for a magical stargazing experience — and with a bit of luck, you might even catch the mesmerizing Northern Lights dancing across the sky.

Visa information
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a trusted third-party. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements and does not cover full entry visas. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy for stays under 90 days typically do not need a tourist visa. Additional service fees may apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa. Always check official sources before traveling.
Accommodation
Accommodation
This trip is based on twin-share accommodation, meaning solo travellers will share a room with someone of the same gender. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people along the way. Prefer your own space? A single room supplement is available (subject to availability).
Keep in mind that European hotels may feel smaller than those in the US, and double beds are often two single beds that can be arranged together or separately.
