Tour program
  • Welcome to Scotland and Inverness, the vibrant capital of the Highlands, known for its history, stunning scenery, and proximity to Loch Ness. Today, instead of searching for Nessie, meet your local guide and fellow travelers at Inverness Railway Station to begin your journey to the Orkney Islands. Take the train to Thurso, then transfer to Scrabster port to board the ferry to Orkney. Relax and enjoy your evening meal while admiring the breathtaking views of the Old Man of Hoy, the UK’s tallest sea stack. Upon arriving in Stromness, a private transfer will take you to Kirkwall, the main town on the islands. After the journey, settle into your accommodation, and if you wish, take a stroll into the town centre or enjoy a drink to unwind.
  • Accommodation
    • Guesthouse (1 night)
  • Meals
There are no meals included on this day.
  • Special information
Meet your guide and fellow travelers at 1:30 pm in the main ticket hall of Inverness Railway Station. The station is small, so look for your guide in the fixed seating area holding an Intrepid sign.
Arriving on time is essential, as the group will depart from Inverness shortly afterward. If your flight arrives late, consider booking an extra night in Inverness before the trip begins.
The station offers toilets, shops, cafes, and luggage storage, and several supermarkets are within walking distance for snacks, food, or drinks. Its central location also makes it easy to pick up any last-minute items or visit a chemist.
Please note that there is no trolley service or bar on the train, though plenty of food and drink options are available at the station or in Inverness beforehand.
Today’s journey is long, taking about 7.5 hours with a combination of train, ferry, and pre-booked taxis, with an expected arrival in Kirkwall around 9 pm. On the ferry, you’ll find tea, coffee, soft drinks, and snacks from vending machines.
The guesthouse is a 17-minute walk uphill from the town centre. If you prefer, your guide can arrange a taxi for you.
  • This morning, we’ll explore Kirkwall, the lively heart of the Orkney Islands. Join our guide for a walking tour through the town’s Viking history, including highlights such as St Magnus Cathedral (founded in 1137), the ‘Peedie Sea,’ and the winding streets where the traditional ‘Ba’ game is played each year. The afternoon is free to revisit craft shops, museums, or historic sites you may have missed earlier. For those who wish, the guide will lead a short hike up Wideford Hill for panoramic views of Kirkwall and the surrounding islands. Alternatively, you can visit a whisky distillery, browse local craft and jewellery shops, or relax in a pub. After dinner, if the skies are clear, enjoy a guided walk outside Kirkwall for stargazing and, with luck, a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

Our adventure begins with a visit to the Italian Chapel, an extraordinary structure created from two Nissen huts by Italian prisoners of war. We’ll then cross the impressive Churchill Barriers, built during the war to protect Scapa Flow from U-boat attacks, where several shipwrecks still emerge above the water. Heading west, we’ll explore one of Orkney’s most famous landmarks, the prehistoric village of Skara Brae. After building up an appetite, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in a historic schoolhouse, featuring the best of local Orkney produce. On the return to Kirkwall, we’ll stop at the iconic Ring of Brodgar Standing Stones, a UNESCO World Heritage site over 5,000 years old. Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
The main mode of transport on this trip is by train, providing fast, direct travel between destinations without the delays of road traffic and delivering you straight into city centres. Trains are comfortable and equipped with toilets, though they can sometimes be crowded.
Please note that you will need to carry your own luggage on and off trains, and up and down stairs at stations and hotels. Ensure your luggage complies with the weight and size limits outlined in the 'Packing' section of the Essential Trip Information.
Summer temperatures in many regions we visit can exceed 40°C, so it’s important to protect yourself from the sun and stay well hydrated. July, August, and early September are peak season along the southern Italian coast, which may affect local infrastructure due to higher visitor numbers.
Hotel accommodations in Europe may differ from American or Australian standards, often featuring two single beds pushed together instead of a double, and shared bathrooms rather than en-suite facilities. If you have extra time, consider extending your trip to explore more of Italy. You could travel further south to the heel of Italy on our ‘Rome to Southern Italy’ trip (trip code ZMSSC) or continue on to Sicily with our ‘Rome to Sicily’ trip (trip code ZMSFC).
Visa information
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a trusted third-party. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements and does not cover full entry visas. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy for stays under 90 days typically do not need a tourist visa. Additional service fees may apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa. Always check official sources before traveling.

The accommodation listed in the day-to-day itinerary serves as a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may be necessary if our usual accommodation is unavailable. In such cases, a similar standard of lodging will be provided.
Twin Share Basis
Accommodation on this trip is based on twin or multi-share rooms. Solo travelers are paired with another traveler of the same gender, according to passport information. Please note that some facilities may be shared rather than en-suite, and in rare cases, you may share a room with travelers from different Intrepid trips.
Check-In Time
Hotels will generally prepare rooms for our arrival, even if we arrive before standard check-in times. However, this isn’t always guaranteed. If a room isn’t ready, luggage can be stored while you begin exploring your new destination.
Pre/Post Trip Accommodation
If you’ve booked pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (where available), you may need to change rooms from your main trip accommodation for these extra nights.

Important notes

  1. A single room option is available for those who prefer not to share. Availability is limited, so please contact your booking agent for more details.
  2. The trip’s overall physical rating is 2. However, certain activities—such as the climb to Mt Vesuvius’ summit and the hike along the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)—require a higher level of fitness. Please review the day-to-day itinerary carefully or consult your guide for more information. You may opt out of any activity you do not wish to join.
  3. Time in Rome at the start of the trip is limited. If you want to explore the city more thoroughly, we recommend arriving a day or two early, especially if you wish to visit the Vatican Museums, which are closed most Sundays.
