It’s important to attend the welcome meeting at the beginning of your trip — during this time, your leader will collect your travel insurance and emergency contact details. If you think you might arrive late, please let your travel agent or the hotel reception know in advance. You can also check with reception or look for a note posted in the lobby for details about the meeting’s time and location.
  • After breakfast, meet your group and travel by public bus to Sumburgh, where a scenic coastal hike leads to the remarkable archaeological site of Jarlshof. Discover layers of history spanning from the Iron Age to the Viking era as you explore the remains of ancient settlements and hear the stories of those who once lived here. Continue along the rugged coastline to Sumburgh Head lighthouse, where dramatic views meet rich maritime heritage shaped by generations of lighthouse keepers. After a day filled with history and breathtaking scenery, return to Lerwick in the late afternoon. • Special information
After breakfast, join your group and take a public bus to Sumburgh, where a scenic coastal walk brings you to the extraordinary archaeological site of Jarlshof. Here, uncover centuries of history—from Iron Age dwellings to Viking settlements—while learning about the people who once lived on this land. Continue along the wild coastline to Sumburgh Head lighthouse, where sweeping views combine with fascinating maritime stories passed down through generations of lighthouse keepers. In the late afternoon, return to \

Lerwick and enjoy free time at your own pace—take a relaxed stroll along the waterfront, explore the town, and dine at one of its vibrant local eateries.
  • Begin your day at the Shetland Museum, where your guide will introduce you to this fascinating cultural space dedicated to the islands’ rich heritage. Through immersive exhibits and impressive collections, you’ll journey from ancient Norse times to Shetland’s strong maritime traditions, while also discovering its unique crafts, customs, and wildlife.

Later, set out on a guided walking tour of Lerwick, uncovering the highlights of this historic harbour town. As Shetland’s capital, Lerwick flourished during the 19th-century herring boom, growing into a lively port. Its name, meaning “Harbour of the Cairn,” reflects its deep connection to the sea. Today, the town blends Scottish and Norse influences, with narrow streets and historic buildings that echo its maritime past.

Enjoy a free afternoon to explore at your own pace—wander along the bustling harbour, stop by the Lerwick Brewery for a taste of local ales, or simply soak in the atmosphere. In the evening, settle into one of Lerwick’s cosy pubs for a relaxed and welcoming dinner.

  • Special Information
The Lerwick Walking Tour offers a wonderful introduction to the town, covering around 6 km over approximately 2 hours with very little elevation. The route is easy to navigate, with mostly flat, paved streets and some cobbled sections in the historic centre. While the main areas are comfortable for walking, a few quieter streets may include gentle slopes. Lerwick’s narrow, winding lanes add to its character, and the waterfront provides beautiful coastal views. Do take care in wet or windy weather, as surfaces can become slippery, especially near the harbour.

For your free afternoon, here are a few popular experiences to consider—booking in advance is recommended:

  • After breakfast, set off by private minibus to the Hermaness Nature Reserve, where a scenic hike leads you to the iconic Muckle Flugga Lighthouse—the northernmost point of the United Kingdom. Remarkably, Shetland lies closer to Norway than to mainland Scotland, just 170 miles north of Scotland and around 200 miles from Norway. This unique position has shaped the islands’ strong

Norse identity, as Shetland remained part of the Norse Kingdom for centuries before becoming part of Scotland in the 15th century.
Perched on a rugged rocky islet off the coast of Unst, Shetland’s northernmost island, Muckle Flugga Lighthouse has stood watch since 1854, guiding ships through the challenging waters of the North Sea. Its location proved especially vital during the Crimean War, when it played a key role in protecting British vessels. After a day of dramatic landscapes and fascinating history, return to Lerwick in the late afternoon.

    • Shetland - Hermaness Nature Reserve and Muckle Flugga private trip
  • Special information
The Muckle Flugga hike covers approximately 8 km with around 200 metres of elevation gain, taking 3–4 hours to complete.
Trails are generally well-defined, though some sections may be uneven, rugged, or without a clear path. Sturdy, waterproof footwear is strongly recommended, and due to Shetland’s often windy conditions, be sure to bring a windproof and waterproof layer.
As parts of the route feel remote and mobile signal can be unreliable, it’s important to stay close to your group leader throughout the walk.
  • Today, set off by private minibus as you travel north to Eshaness for a spectacular coastal hike. This wild and striking part of Shetland is famed for its towering sea cliffs, rich wildlife, and dramatic volcanic landscapes.

As you walk along the rugged shoreline, keep watch for seals and otters that are often spotted in the area. Eshaness was once shaped by volcanic activity, and its cliffs and rocky terrain still reflect this powerful natural history, offering a fascinating glimpse into the forces that formed Shetland’s unique scenery.
In the evening, back in Lerwick, you may wish to join your group for a final dinner at a local restaurant—an ideal way to share memories from the journey and enjoy one last special evening together.

On three days of the itinerary (Days 2, 3, and 4), you’ll enjoy coastal walks ranging from 5 to 8 km. These hikes are not overly challenging, with gentle terrain and mostly well-defined paths, but a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy, ideally waterproof footwear will help you get the most out of the experience.

Scottish weather is famously unpredictable—often described as four seasons in a single day—especially at the beginning and end of the season. Be sure to pack for all conditions, including base layers, a hat, gloves, a scarf, waterproof clothing, and any additional essentials for changeable weather.
