  • This morning, join your local guide for a private tour of Bucharest. Start by exploring the beautifully restored Old Town, then visit several important locations connected to the 1989 revolution that led to the overthrow and execution of communist leader Nicolae Ceaușescu, marking the end of more than four decades of communist rule in Romania. Along the way, see the vast Piața Unirii, one of the largest public squares in Europe, and the impressive Palace of Parliament. Commissioned by Ceaușescu himself, this enormous 12-storey structure is the second-largest building in the world after the Pentagon and is famous for its incredible size, featuring more than 1,100 rooms and thousands of chandeliers.
In the afternoon, take a train to Brașov, a historic Saxon city dating back to the 13th century. Known in German as Kronstadt, the town is nestled between the Carpathian Mountains and ancient defensive walls, and it once thrived as an important medieval trading centre.

Built by the Saxons in 1382 to guard the Bran Pass from invading Ottoman forces, the castle stands proudly on a rocky cliff surrounded by dense pine forests. With its fairytale towers and pale stone walls, it may not look as dark and frightening as the Dracula stories suggest, yet its dramatic setting makes it truly unforgettable.

Afterward, return to Brașov for a guided walk through the historic town. Stroll past elegant churches, colorful townhouses, remnants of the old city walls, and charming squares lined with merchant houses topped by distinctive gingerbread-style roofs. The highlight of the visit is Brașov’s most famous landmark, the Gothic Black Church (Biserica Neagră), named for the darkened walls it gained after the great fire of 1689.

  • Today, set out on a day trip to the mysterious Hoia Forest, often called one of the most haunted forests in the world. Over the years, visitors and locals have reported ghostly apparitions, strange faces appearing in photographs, and even UFO sightings. Many people say they experience an eerie feeling of being watched while walking through the forest, where twisted trees, unusual vegetation, and scorched tree stumps add to the unsettling atmosphere. The forest gained international attention in the late 1960s after a military technician photographed a UFO above Poiana Rotundă, also known as the Round Meadow.

After a transfer from your hotel, meet your local guide and begin a 3-hour hike through the forest’s gentle hills and quiet valleys. Along the way, hear fascinating local legends and visit the famous Round Meadow where the first UFO sighting was recorded. After the hike, return to your hotel and enjoy a free afternoon to relax or explore at your own pace.

Trip moments from our travelers
Before you book you should know
Is this trip right for you?
Please try to pack light and keep your luggage compact. During the trip you’ll be using public transport, where storage space can be limited. You should be comfortable lifting your bag onto overhead racks, walking with it over cobblestone streets, and carrying it up and down stairs.
Autumn in Romania can be cooler than many travellers expect, so it’s a good idea to bring warm layers.
In many European hotels, double beds are less common and rooms may have two single beds that can be placed together if needed. Some smaller hotels and guesthouses may also offer shared bathrooms instead of private ensuite facilities.
This tour is designed around the Halloween season in October. If you prefer to travel to Romania at another time of year, you might consider trips such as Budapest to Bucharest or the Eastern Europe Explorer, which continues further south into Bulgaria.
Visa information
Visa information is provided by Sherpa, a trusted third-party. The “Add connection” feature only shows transit visa requirements and does not cover full entry visas. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy for stays under 90 days typically do not need a tourist visa. Additional service fees may apply if you choose to purchase a visa through Sherpa. Always check official sources before traveling.
Accommodation
Occasional Alternative Accommodation
The accommodation listed in the daily itinerary is intended as a guide. In rare cases, if our usual hotels are fully booked, we may arrange a similar property of the same standard for your stay.
Twin-Share Rooms
Accommodation on this tour is generally on a twin or multi-share basis. Solo travellers will usually share a room with another traveller of the same gender, based on the gender listed in their passport. Please note that some properties may offer shared bathroom facilities rather than private en-suite rooms. On rare occasions, you may also share accommodation with travellers from other tours.
Check-In Times
We always ask hotels to prepare rooms as early as possible, especially when our group arrives before the official check-in time. However, this cannot always be guaranteed. If rooms are not ready upon arrival, you will be able to leave your luggage at the hotel and begin exploring the destination.
Pre- and Post-Trip Accommodation
If you have booked additional nights before or after the tour (when available), you may need to move to a different room from the one used during the main trip.
Facilities
Please note that not all accommodations will include private en-suite bathrooms or air conditioning. It is also common for European hotels not to provide items such as kettles or mini fridges in the rooms.
Flights
Please note: flight arrangements

We can assist with booking flights from any airport in the United States that is convenient for you. Occasionally, alternative routing or airlines may need to be arranged due to availability, but we will always ensure your flights align with your tour dates and provide the same level of comfort and reliability. Our goal is to make your journey to Romania smooth, stress-free, and perfectly timed with your tour.

Important notes

1. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
2. Please note that the physical rating for this trip is set at 2. While this is correct for the overall trip, there are some components that are of a higher physical rating. Both the climb to the summit of Mt Vesuvius and the hike on the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) require a certain amount of fitness. Please read the day-to-day itinerary carefully or speak to your leader for more details. Activities can be opted out of if you don't want to participate.
3. You don't have a lot of time in Rome at the start of the trip, so if you're keen to explore this spectacular city in depth we recommend you arrive a day or two before the start of the trip, especially if you would like to see the Vatican Museum as it is closed most Sundays.
